14 pointsI had to go to a customer's house yesterday for work and found this little gem. He said he didn't need it anymore and sold it to me with a bunch extras to go with it..... Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk

9 pointsA small local Wheel Horse and Lawn Boy dealer. A young boy 12 yrs old stopped in and asked for a job. The owner said come back next year when you're 13. He did. He learned Wheel Horses inside and out. He could tune up a Lawn Boy guaranteed to start on the first pull. That shop owner has past away and that boy was me 45 years ago. I will re-do a horse in honor of Mr. Fay Parrott of Parrott' Sales & Service.

4 pointsOkay, so after all the input and suggestions, I have chosen Brian's suggestion to give the hitch a few strategic raps with the hammer and... Voilà ...it can be done. And with minimal paint damage as well. Thanks!

3 pointsBeen looking for a 1848 for a few years, but no more. Been hitting Craigslist at least once a day for what is seems was forever. Finaly one pops up in Arkansas but was gone real fast. Did a Searchtempest look and this one had been on for a month. Don't know how I missed it, about 2 hours away, PO had given up on it when he broke the inlet nipple off the fuel pump. Thought about how to fix it all the way back. Reamed nipple and pump body and tapped a piece of 3/16 steel brake line in it. New fuel line and filter and it came to life. The deck he said worked but I will get it on the scrap pile as soon as possible. When finally drug the deluxe canopy out I told him that he just made the deal and lets get it loaded. It definately needs to be Martinized though.

2 pointsI recently picked this boat up from Stevebo... In the back of my mind I had a feeling it would one day be mine. I'm almost done polishing it, I just need to do a little more on the very bottom where the trailer bunks are in the way. I think maybe next week while on vacation I'll get to that. When I get back from the show I'm going to have seat cushions made for it. Over the past few days I have been putting together a motor for it, a 1953 Evinrude 25 hp. Its now all together and purrs like a kitten, now I just need to repaint it and add decals...

2 pointsJust picked this up today. Saw it advertised last night, took some dealing but it followed me in my rear view mirror for about 12 miles. Thanks to someone from Johnstown, PA that decided to come to the Great State of Texas back in 1989. One owner, has all original paperwork, brochures, bill of sale.

2 pointsAround me we have a Facebook page for selling stuff, all guy stuff cars, tractors, guns, tools you name it, well a guy had posted a WH and a Craftsman for sale both in a barn but not ran in years, I sent him a offer on both, but was second in line, after the first person passed on the WH, because it said Toro on the hood, I got a call I was next, so after talking to the guy on the phone I loaded up and drove the 65 miles to look at them, I could see through the layers of dirt the tractors where both in pretty good shape, so I made a lowball offer just to see, as he said they are gong to the scrap in a few days, and he took my offer, so we aired up the tires and loaded them up, it was after 10pm lastnight so no pics then, I left them on the trailer and took them to the car wash today after work, to clean them up a bit, and I will say for a quick job they cleaned up pretty good, I plan to do more clean up after I mess with them. The WH is a 97 312 8 speed with 900 hours on it, and a 42" SD deck, was told it had a wiring issue, so after we unloaded them tonight, I hooked up a batt charger and it cranked right over but no spark, well it's a Magnum, so I unplugged the 3 wire lead to the engine to make sure it was not shorting, the Mag. does not need power to run only to crank the starter, and then it fired right up, runs like a champ no smoke or noises. throttles up smooth, I plugged the wiring back in and now it starts fine, still need to look in to the issue, but I think this will be a nice machine. The Craftsman needs a starter, I have one in stock but have not messed with it, it has a 19.5 HP Kohler Magnum in it, 46" deck, 55lb wheel weights, it's a little beat up but not to bad, need to see how it runs, if it runs good I even have a snow blade to fit it. Well on to the pics

2 pointsthianks for your input. much appreciated. i thought a lot about this at work today while working in the sauna and considered your points. what if the manifold had a slight leak before and was being masked by a carb that was running slightly rich? the reason I'm still saying the carb is slightly rich is i couldn't adjust a smooth idle with the idle mix screw without almost being closed and then it just wouldn't run smooth (reasonably) at all. i know most of this stuff was on the engine before its clean up, but a lot of things have changed since then, the resealed manifold (not the one on the engine, but another i had), gaskets, clean intake and exhaust path, valves adjusted, which by the way i checked over and over before sealing the engine, new plugs, new coil and other ignition components, etc etc. just for giggles tonight when i got home i changed out the main jet. but not before doing a bunch of reading on the subject on wfm and a few other tractor sites that the machines use Onan engines. from the info gathered the 120 jet was used in the P218 carb (#205 venturi). the P218 also has the same displacement as the P220 at 47.7 cu in. i couldn't find definite info regarding the P216 size main (pre accel pump Nikki) and all can gather is that they were used on the P216 carbs with the #205 venturi as that was what the carb had when i got it through Mike (sorekiwi). i think i remember him saying it was on a 516 wheel horse but I'm not 100% on that. now i have a P216 emissions Nikki carb that does run a 114 jet. apparently this was done to cut down on emissions..... anyway back to the P218, its displacement is 47.7 cu in. and the P216 is 43.3 cu in. now I'm thinking if going from the 18hp carb to the 20hp carb (with the same engine size) the jet size increased from 120 to 134, why would you expect an engine with 4.4 cu in less displacement to be ok with the same size 120 jet? there was probably 1000s of engines made that were ok with that, but obviously mine was not enjoying that size jet in it now. i had a 114 so why not try it..... so i did, the results are night and day from how it was. still not perfect but this engine is still basically a 580 hour engine under all its shiny parts. remember this isn't a rebuild, the bores were cleaned up with scotchbrite and you only need to go back to the beginning of this ordeal..... here..... to see how bad it was. i don't think i really got close ups of the bores from water damage either, so I'm surprised that it runs as nice as it does here......

2 pointsThats a good way to spend your lunch time. Looks like you went to the Wheel Horse Buffet!

2 pointsI was up to thirteen, back to five, up to seven, down to four, back to three. Now looking to get down to two. Doesn't really seem to end, just settles out. If the right one comes along, I'll be back to four in no time.
-
2 pointsyou can bend it back without heating I have done it many times the arms bent when you drove the pin pieces out work from both sides back and forth does not take much of a tweek to line the holes back up Brian
-
2 pointsI use it at the end of the mowing season for a fuel stabilizer that's about it I think if carb needs cleaned there is nothing going to clean it for you but taking it off and cleaning it that's just my two cents

1 pointPulled out my Dad's old BCS tiller over the weekend to finish plowing my garden. This tiller is a 735 model, is all gear drive. The handles can be rotated 180 degrees and a mower or snow thrower can be mounted. My Dad made a lot of garden with this tractor over the years, he bought it when the only rear tine tiller most were buying was Troybilt. He bought it in 1985. It has hi and low range, individual brakes on each wheel for traction and steering, as well as a differential lock. The tractor is Itialian made and has an Acme engine. As my Dad said to me when servicing this tiller prior to use, "The engine has never failed me." Really the tiller has never fail him - ever. Thought you might enjoy some info on this tiller and some pics.

1 pointI have a variety of tires. The Carlisle tru power 6 ply on the back hoe D 180. Carlisle tru power 4 ply filled with 15 gallon each RV antifreeze on the standard D 180. The back hoe has 25 psi of air and the standard with the liquid has 7 psi of air. I also have a set of Deeston's filled with antifreeze, these are also for the back hoe when I put the duals on in the future. I will be running turf tires 4 ply this winter with liquid and chains for plowing snow. Al

1 pointAll 314-8's (except for 1985 model) and 315-8's came with the 1 and 1/8" axles and 8 pinion differentials Thad

1 pointShaun. Let's split a lottery ticket. You are the luckiest. Check the bottom of your boots. Did you step on a lucky dog chip. Looks great. Glenn

1 pointYes and you can double check that via the Toro master parts viewer looking at the qty of parts shown, which is 8 pinions. The Partstree.com website even says 8 pinion on some of the tranny descriptions and I think yours is one of them. The axle part number for all of the Toro badged 314-8 tractors is 1-1/8 inches.

1 pointMy old ears can't hear anything wrong with that engine. It does not sound like it is surging. Send me your address and I will drive from Maryland up there and take it off your hands. Seriously though if you feel that it is running as good as it should then it probably is. I have a 416H with 528 hours on it. I know it is not up to factory new condition, but it is good enough for me.
-
1 pointLike I said, wishful thinking. I mentioned it to the wife and she wasn't thrilled with the idea, especially with our vacation being so close. She reminded me of my list of things to get done before we leave. Working so much on this tractor is severely cutting into what little time I have left to get things done.
-
1 pointThat's enough for today. Here where it stands. Just a few more minor pieces to paint and It can all go back together. Boy it's great having a second complete tractor to compare for re-assembly. I can't believe I can't remember how everything goes!

1 pointUpdate and Success Story - YEAH!!!! I received the throttle cable assembly from my dealer this afternoon. I got home and installed it, fired up the engine and all is well. Full engine speed and no slippage. My take on this is that the throttle assembly was not providing enough back tension on the governor. So the governor was moving the throttle handle instead of the engine throttle plate. All in all, it was a easy fix once I figured it out. Not terribly expensive either. Thanks to everyone for the help. Especially Martin

1 pointwell, Could be a number of things...weak spring and detent ball in the high/low shift fork..Bent shift fork which wont let is seat completely gears rounded over which would cause it to push it out of gear..And the only way to tell is you gonna have to pull it and split the trans..

1 pointAll the steering parts including the block, tie-rods, front bearing, vertical shaft etc are all NOS parts. I installed the steering tower and the vertical shaft and there is no play what so ever!

1 pointSteve, the boat is undeniably cool as he--, but this thread has now lost direction. I want to see more of the truck!

1 pointI spent the first few hours this morning assembling the frame and steering. I got to head out to get more primer and paint. I should be able to get some more done tonight. Tomorrows a wash thanks to that dreaded thing called work.
-
1 pointBob, a real easy Super solution has evolved. Use the other one, I'll bet this is for a tractor your bringing to the show so I would really expect the paint to be dry and it'll be on or in your trailer when we see you next Thursday.
-
1 pointBob if you put the pin in and check the gap at the other side be sure to check it from both sides all you may need to do is squeeze it a little in a vise and the holes should line up brian
-
1 pointThis boat is currently at the upholstery shop getting some final touches. New seat cushions and covers.
-
1 pointReference to Steve's Bear Jersey post as Jay Cutler throws a lot of interceptions that are returned for touchdowns.

1 pointI have no proof it does anything but I run some thru the first tank of the season ( and sta-bil thru out the year) and I've never had a hard time getting things going when the seasons change. I'll also run some in the oil (if I have some laying around) when I plan on changing the oil in 'new to me' equipment, but don't bother when I've maintained the engines.

1 pointHi Guys Thanks for all the help. I guess I need to open my eyes lol I found it. Thank you again Jeff Main
-
1 pointGuys, you've been brilliant, thank you all. I've been reading more posts here and see if I reverse the pinions (+maybe bit of welding?)there might be just enough teeth to lock the diff for one rough cut.of the lawns That gives me time to look for a doner tractor, (heard there MAY be one from a barn fire coming up this month.) Otherwise I'll be back here with my visa card. Mike, Yes, I could hardly believe it, ripped a quarter of the teeth off one pinion, chewed up the others but the suns and ring lightly scored. Seems like the pinions worked like very expensive shear pins Thanks again, cheers! redpath42

1 pointFactory 418-8 was one of the best and smoothest running WH tractors I ever owned it had electric lift. Here we go......wish I would have never sold it!
-
1 pointI have a 420-8. It started as a 416-8 but I had it repowered with a very new 20 horse Onan. I know it doesn't count but just thought that I would throw it out there. Been thinking of have decals made for it.

1 pointI spoke personally with Jeff Kane, former president of the club. The club does realize that RedSquare is an important part of the whole Wheel Horse hobby, The club is looking for ways to increase membership, and realizes that RedSquare can be a big help to that effort. As a result, the RedSquare group picture will actually be printed on the events schedule next year.
