5 pointsWell the girlfriend came to pick me up at work since we are short a vehicle from the PA hail storm. When she drives up I see a Raider 10 in the bed of the truck! She saw me looking at it on craigslist. It was listed with a plow , blower and deck. But when I called , he said it was sold..... Turns out the person he sold it to was her . Totally through me off, Ill tell you. Not many girlfriends out there that will buy you a tractor lol. And here I thought she was thinking I had to many.... She said, I like the older ones , with the older hoods. Yours are to new looking. So then she saw an RJ today and now I guess we need one of them too . Oh well, I guess this gives me the right to buy some more . Only issues with it is, it leaks fuel out of the fuel shut off mounted on the hood stand. Only when the fuel is turned on. Can I replace seals in this or buy a new one like it to mount there or do I just have to eliminate it with a new plastic type?? Second issue is the starter went south. It flew apart on the guy she bought it from when he was starting it. Now I have broken pieces. The starter motor is good but not the gear drive bendix. Any one know where to find a starter for a 10 horse Tecumseh?? No one local has one.... I showed the starter to Bill Jenkins and he said he never saw one like it. It has a heavy cast iron mounting bracket that uses two bolts to mount to the block. He told me , it was the first time he saw one like it. Hope that's not a bad sign.... We would love to be able to take this to the tractor show this weekend in bowers pa. We did however kick start it by towing it behind the 520H and it ran and drove really nice actually. So that was a plus. Here are some pictures for you guys.....

3 pointsWell the little D 180 back hoe/ loader did an outstanding job this past weekend. I did blow two hydraulic hoses on the back hoe, but these are easily replaced. Just down the road I have a hose shop. The first hole I dug was basically for practice. I dug about a 6' diamiter by 3' down. sandy dirt littered with roots. The roots are what loaded the hoses and pressure blew. Eventually I will replace all the hoses. Next came the 75' X 18" X 3' trench. This machine worked flawless. I could not be happier. I buried a power line and a water hose to go under our drive. Ran both in 3" pipe. Next project a 10" diamiter walnut tree. Dug around the base broke all the roots, pushed over the tree. Amazing. Pulled out the trunk, cut off the stump with chainsaw. Since I was playing around, wondered how deep will this go. So, I started diggin. Fun I tell ya, plain old fun. I conservitivly measured 5' deep 10 diam. The bottom of the hole was very loose dirt. With a little more scooping, I really think 6' would be acheavable. I can't believe more back hoes are not around. Can't wait till next weekend. Playing in the sand box. lol Al

3 pointsHi All, Well I finally invested into a Wheel Horse. I had been creeping on here for a couple of months now and been trying to learn as much as I can about these machines. I had bought a little acreage and was looking for a garden tractor. Didn't want to buy anything new b/c they're all crap nowadays. I started doing a lot of research on Wheel Horses when I saw an ad on CL. This is my 520-H that I had just bought. It came with the 60" deck, single stage snow blower, chains, wheel weights, and only has 525 hours. I had bought it for $2,100. Think that was an alright deal? I was just thinking I would have spent somewhere between 2k to 3k more on something new with a snow blower and it be not as reliable as these are. I'm kind of concerned using the chains on my concrete driveway though. Anyone consider trading for the plastic ones? They're the v-bar ones know. I just love the fact when the whole block is mowing their yards and they all have the same brand and the same green color tractors, they all stare at my wheel horse. Love it! p.s. Just ordered new blades, and not trying to figure out how to remove the deck just yet. Is it possible just to lift the front end on jack stands? If so, where would be the safest place to place them on the horse? Thanks! -Gabe Lincoln, NE

3 pointsWell, it was sad to see it go.....but I sold my GT14. It needed so much work, ran like a top but looked rough, luckily enough for me a dude and his two sons bought it to fix it up, so I knew it would have a better life with them. After they left I delivered a brand new JD X320 to a family friend of ours, she had no means to get it home, NICE TRACTOR! She also bought a matching trailer, she then gave me her old 418A for free!!!! Along with 2 pics of her late Wheel Horse loving husband sitting on it the day they took delivery. She also included bill of sale, finance paperwork, and all sorts of sales literature!! I am honored to be the new owner and keep this wonderful machine in its retirement. Just wanted to share my cool story.

3 pointsoh the KT was initially frozen. I pulled plugs and poured in some blaster 2 days later she turned right over. It is missing air cleaner, coil, coil wiring, plug wires, and some odds and ends. She needs LOTS of work. The guy that let this thing get this way should be shot.

3 pointsVan, Bring it to the show and we can inspect it! (run it around)

2 pointsSnagged this tiller up today that was advertised on Craigslist. '97 36" tiller, barely used. Seller called me today to say the bracket was still attached to the tractor and today wasnt a good day to remove it. I happily brought my own tools to remove the axle hitch to make sure I got that thing today. $100!!!

2 pointsAs usual, the Haulasuarus is bringing a NOS brinley plow for Squonk...picking up 2 Techy engines for TerryM and a seat for DClark for one of his horses. Don't want to jinx myself, but with Butch showing up...I just may have a raffle tractor to bring back also. It will be good to see all of you guys again.

2 pointsDid I mention that they have an indoor swimming pool?? and free continental breakfast...including waffles!!

2 pointsI usually bring a few Motorola's, Steve and I usually go back and forth... The conversation the last few year's mostly consisted of me asking Steve if Big Whitey needed a push to help it up the hill....Now that he has his new Duramaximus his top end is unlimited...He might flex some muscle and throw me the tow rope. Last I knew Richard Rawlings (that Gaskey Monkey) was drivin the black T/A

2 pointsGabe...GOOD DEAL for sure....add Terry's new decals to it and your neighbors will really "rubberneck ya" On a 60" deck the back deck wheels remain on the ground...the hydro lift only lifts and lowers the FRONT of the deck.....I hope I never have to remove the deck because it is heavy and built like a tank....(clip a fence post with the edge of the deck , hang on, and find out) PS...forgot to say "Welcome".....and watch out for shuboxlover near ya!

2 pointsDo we use CB's? Who's gonna drive the Black TransAm?
-
1 pointFigured with less than 3 weeks to go until the show this would be a fun topic. So... what are you going to bring and what are you looking for while there? I am picking up JDog's C195. I am bringing my 520-8, original 702 with deck (so I can mow a little while there-lol) and my son's Lawn Ranger. I am looking to have a good time and not have to worry about bringing the SR. or restored 35. I also want my son to be able to drive anyone of the tractors while there and not have to worry about who will start the pull start.

1 pointHere is the latest score. I have been looking for a good 16hp Magnum for over a year now (can't have too many) to install in my C-165. Also was needing a nice padded high back seat to as a replacement for the 414-8 that I purchased right before the Big Show last year. I found this one within an hours drive from my house. It was a Father / Son project. The Son lost interest first and then the Dad. After getting it home and learning how to adjust the governor, and change the oil, I am happy to report the big Kohler runs nicely. It fires right up hot or cold, does not knock or smoke. It will be the perfect replacement engine for my C-165 Black Hood that I am so fond of. Then I will have a rolling 300/400 chassis to pick parts from. I do have a question for those of you who know more about the 300/400 series of Wheel Horses than I do. There is no ID anywhere. It has the 8 speed with 1" axles. It has the 22" tall tires on the rear like a 310, and the 6" wheel in front like a 310 or 312. It has an hour meter on it like a 312 or 416. So could such a Wheel Horse have come from the factory equipped like this? If so, what is it? A 316-8? A 416-8 (down graded)? Or is it a 310-8 with an engine transplant, which is what I am thinking it is. Anyway, what is your opinion? Thanks, Van

1 pointI saw Bert's herd so I had to share a photo that I took earlier of my 1990's rides. The 1998 314 is on the right. The 1996 416H is on the left with the 1996 416/20 in the middle. I likem!!!

1 pointFinally, worked it hard today, gave it a bath and a good rubdown and it is heading into the stable soon for a rest. This was quite an experience redoing an old horse, cost me a LOT more than I had expected, but, it is worth it, it will still be running after I am gone, LOL Still need a few decals to finish up, hope to get them soon.

1 pointRolf, I guess it depends on what you define the problem as. As far as I am concerned, I dont think it is a problem to own a bunch of tractors. In my current situation though, it IS a problem to buy more!!

1 pointGlad you got it running Martin!! Does that carburetor have a main jet adjustment needle? I don't have any experience with that model of Onan, but I've had plenty of engines that surged until air fuel mixture was set right. Matt

1 pointI have been down to 1 for several years. Ans last fall moved to a new place with nowhere to store the Charger 12 so he's been under a tarp. But he's still working for me... Mike, not sure if passing up is a cure versus selling off all your herd!!

1 pointOk here are the pics of my seeder and mounting plate. This plate bolts to the Clevis hitch. I have made an adaptor to go from sleeve to clevis hitch. More pics coming in next post. File was too big to post all at once. More pics

1 pointanother major difference is the colors..... 1982 was painted pewter metallic, this was the same color as 1971 Lincoln-Mercury Pewter Metallic 1983 and 1984 were painted non metallic light pewter, this was the same color as 1982 Lincoln Light Pewter (non metallic)

1 pointSomething Martin said earlier started to sink in. He asked if my throttle handle on the dash was in good condition. I got to thinking that the throttle uses the spring to balance the governor and set the carburetor. If the throttle handle assembly was loose it can't keep tension on the spring. Sure enough, the handle was very loose. I clamped on the frame with some Vicegrips and put some tension on the handle and now the engine seems to be running perfectly - completely across the range of rpm. I have ordered a new throttle handle assembly and its due to be here on Wednesday. That will prove the point. At this point I'm almost ready to declare victory, but its not time to celebrate yet. In any case I was able to hold the throttle open at 3600 and run around the yard for the first time. Thank you Martin!!!!!!!!!!

1 pointThat's a sleeper tractor! Like a Plymouth Duster with a big engine. Looks like your average 310 until you look under the hood, then you know she means business!! I am agreeing with you, a 310 with a transplant.
-
1 pointIf they are the same part #, then they are the same part...and interchangeable. I would send a PM to Mike (racinfool40) and ask him...he might even have the parts you need.

1 pointI got it back together... and tilled... then the coupler between the PTO and tiller lost the ball bearings that held it in place... more fun did a video of me putting it back together and the tilling... that was fun... I first drilled and tapped it for 3/8... which was wrong... had to go and get a 7/16 tap... a note the auto-zone taps are awful... but it was the only place around... I got the pivot in... I am going to replace the clutch surfaces this year... but at least its working... After this run I swapped in a newer coil and re-gapped the points... they were way tighter then .020... maybe .015... they looked good though... You can also see in that video the level of smoking I get... a little on startup... then it clears up... on that cylinder (left side if sitting on seat) the valve cover has some oil seep on it... so I'm thinking the valves are leaking... I'm going to do a compression test next weekend... and try a leak down test... I want to get a new gasket for the valve cover before I open it up...

1 pointThat tractor is nice and your girlfriend is even nicer. I'd say she's a keeper!
-
1 pointI was just given one of these. Except mine has the 8hp diesel engine. The previous owner couldn't start it anymore, pull start only and 18-1 compression. After throwing out my back, I was finally able to get it running. These things are built incredibly. Mines a 1977, I do have the cover but its broken. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

1 pointWith that heavy a deck you should remove it from the tractor. One of the best ways to separate the deck from the tractor is after you have removed your t-bar lift is to drive over the deck. You will need to put some boards to help get up and over. You can slide the deck out but it is a job. That deck is heavy to say the least. They do a wonder full job of cutting but are a bear to maintain.

1 pointThanks Martin, I am puzzled too. From what I understand the governor movement is normal. I do have that 30 degrees of free gov arm movement with the engine off, that is what I would expect. With the engine running and everything hooked up, There is movement, but its limited by the engine speed and the spring. As I understand governors, the flying balls work against the spring to control speed. The throttle just controls spring tension and therefore the engine speed. I hadn't thought about the throttle control on the dash. It seems to work normally, but a mounting screw is missing and the remaining 3 screws are miss matched. So, some body has been working on it. I'll take a hard look before I go further. At this point I have to decide how to proceed. Everything in my experience says I have a linkage problem, not a governor problem. I have tried every adjustment on the cable, springs, and linkage - nothing seemed to help. I might just button up the engine and try again. I'm missing something here and I don't want to throw big money at this yet. Pulling the shroud was not a waste. It was really dirty in there. Cleaning that up was long over due.

1 pointWelcome to the 520 club... nothing like starting out at the top of the heap. Great minds think alike, was my first too.

1 pointThanks, Martin. I'll go with the 93-9809. Gee. Yours looks a little cleaner than mine!
-
1 pointWelcome to Horse-a-holics Anonymous! Nice looking Stallion you have there. You'll never need another garden tractor even though you'll wind up with several more..........at least! You'll laugh when you see BIG BOX thingys sittin' out, incapacitated, weathering away.

1 pointBefore I get thrown off the forum, I will state that once home I did spend a couple of hours head-scratching and chopping up steel for the latest bastardization of the Lawn Ranger. If what I am planning works, I'll post some pictures to prove it.
