5 pointsWell as some of you might know I collect a ton of Wheel Horse tractors. But what ya may not know is I also have a huge collection of vintage WH paper work to go with my machines! I recently found a nice stash of vintage WH Brochures on Ebay and made a deal with the seller. Some eagle eyed Redsquare members probably saw them listed a couple of weeks ago, since they had 3 or 4 Watchers on the auctions. They ran one session and didn't sell and were quite pricey. After the auctions ended I contacted the seller to see if I could make a deal on them. He said he would relist them with a Buy It Now price and Make An Offer section as well. So I made him a couple of good offers and he accepted them both! They were the most I have ever paid for a couple of peices of paper but I figured they would go well with my other ultra rare WH paperwork! So with that said, take a look at these 2 rare as hens teeth Brochure's from 1955!! I figured Michael Martino probably has one like the RJ25 Brochure with the Prototype RJ25 on it,(check it out Vin!) since his book Straight From The Horse's Mouth has one on the front cover! I have never seen one like this before in all of my 28 years of hoarding WH stuff! I have never seen one like the Walk Away 2 wheeled Horse Brochure either! Both of these are in mint condition and looking great! I put this stuff along side of some of my other 1955 Brochures just for a photo op. The RJ25 Brochure matches nicely with the RS83 Brochure. 3 pointsWell to clarify, the 603 Specials are made to be a cheaper priced economy tractor. The WH factory had a lot of older style parts sitting in their inventory so they were smart about it and put all different types of older parts in this particular machine. So they used up the old parts such as footrest's from as early as 1960/61 as noted by the early production straight shoe sole type of footrests that dropped down some for a boot heel to fit into and were only made for a short time before they switched to later shoe sole type that are angled outward like the 1961 WH's and didn't step down for the heel but were flat. There is a few 603's around that have the step down type and even more were sold with the flat shoe sole type. But once WH got rid of their older footrests which may not take long, they installed their new stirrup type of footrest's on the 603. They came out in 1962 and they used them for quite a few years. The hood stand on these machines were a 1964 Model year item but it was put on the late production Special Model 603 to start the new style. So the front axles, steering parts, front tires and rims were old style parts too. Some 603's have older style Suburban front rims with no holes in them for Wheel Weights like all the other 1964 WH's had. I had one 603 that I sold to a friend on this site, it has a old style 1950's and 60's tool box on it with no fenders mounted to it and the early step down shoe sole footrests too. It had a low Serial Number on it. The hood is also a 1964 style of hood. So you can virtually have a 603 with a lot of different combinations of parts. That is why I like them and have so many of them. They are all different from each other. As far as the hood goes, it didn't come with the indented part where the 2 inch square WH decal resides on one of my 603's pictured. That hood was repainted years ago by a WH dealer that repowered the tractor and placed the decals on there according to the original owner, a 90 year old woman who I got it from, a Miss Clara Bell Valentine! Seems she couldn't pull the original recoil starter anymore so they popped on a new electric start motor a 6 hp Tecumseh. So that 603 was converted to an electric start model and they spruced it up for her too. She kept the original motor as well! I left it as is to keep the story going in her memory. The new for 1964 hoods came with the decal there but just not indented anymore like the 1962 and 1963 hoods. The stripes that are on mine and Ken's new 603 are not correct, but they kind of look cool, mine is a double pinstripe. I think Ken's is a rubber piece of door trim from Napa or The Walmart. So I hope this clears up some of the questions on the 603. I am sure I don't know everything about the 603 so feel free to chime in. The 1045 was another inventory reducing machine that was produced late in the 1964 year and cleared out a lot of old fenders, tool box assemblies and square seats from the earlier Models. I have never heard the 1045's referred to as an Economy Tractor for a reduced price like the 603 was advertised to be. WH did it a few more times over their history and it worked out quite well for them financially. I thought most of this info was common knowledge to most WH collectors but maybe not. Nuff said...

2 pointsI grabbed the 603 today. I left work early so I got it home by 2:30 this afternoon First thing I did was 86 the chrome side moldings and give it a bath. Tore the mower deck and homemade rear hitch off. Cleaned the tank, carb, new fuel lines and pulled the flywheel to clean the points. It runs and drives but it runs like any tired Techy I've ever had, dizzy, dazed and a little confused with some smoke but it does run which is more than I expected. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about an engine for this tractor... There is a spring missing on the throttle assembly on the flywheel side of the engine, anyone got a picture of that spring and where it goes?

2 pointsThe 62-series of serial numbers started in 1962. 1962 tractor serial numbers recorded so far range from 62-01104 to 62-21125 Your 702 serial 62-04216 lands in the 4th of 16 batches of 702's recorded so far and that batch ranges from 62-03298 to 62-05608 (I have added a zero to the 4-digit numbers so the database can handle them) The 1962 attachments used an A-series serial and range from A-01387 to A-26964 The 1963 attachments used an A-series serial and range from A-27183 to A-55713 They still had 62-Series decals left so continued to use them in 1963 on the tractors. The 1st were on a 1st of 4 batches of 953's and range from 62-00137 to 62-00928 The next 1963 tractor serials range from 62-20610 to 62-25718 and guess they ran out of them before serial 26210 which is next. The highest recored so far is 47957 for a 1963 tractor. In 1964 there were still A-series decals left so they were used on both the tractor and attachments now. The 1964 serials recorded so far start at A-50086 and run to A-75181. Next 1964 serial is 03301 and runs to 48689. Next are the 1054's that range 48732 to 49725 in the 3rd batch of 3 and the last for 1964 Next is a 1965 1054A with serial 49065 Now more 1054A's ranging from 49533 to 50366 in the 1st of 2 batches. These last 3 lines show a discrepancy. It appears the 1054's and 1054A's were built back to back and few owners know which model they have. This is from a small sample of approx. 4500 serial numbers. The number of units they built is staggering. Some of the recorded numbers I have could have been read wrong, hard to read and always the chance of a typo even with me. I think the way it happened was once they had enough parts to build x number of a model of tractor they issued a serial number for each in that batch. That batch then went into production. Later on they included the build date with the serial numbers in the batch. That's when you start to see the build dates in progressive order but the batches of serials are not progressive. They are progressive within the batch. Perhaps the serials were assigned to a batch before all the parts were available and when they did come in the build date was added. Garry

1 pointWell, I've talked about it and thought about it a lot, and inspired by some of bobs fantastic creations and a few others I finally got started. For those who are wondering what the hell I'm on about here's a few of my faves - there's a doe triple d there too built by Simon here in the UK. The idea of a 4x4 wheel horse attracts me as well as the fact I like big tractors and the oversize ags that go with them. I've a big pile of spares and a Raider 10 minus the engine that looks like a start point Here's the first prototype.... It's a bit weak on power and steering - as well as a few other obvious omissions . This actually let's me see how the transmissions sit. This is more what I'm thinking though.... So armed with two gearboxes, I started the measurements and plans....

1 pointLast fall I Acquired a 1955 RS-83. It is in terrible shape and has been sitting in a WH Dealership Storage Building for 30 years. After getting her Home and giving it a bath I discovered that the rims are in exceptionally bad shape as is the tires and there seems to be a lot of gaskets that need replacing as the tractor has been leaking and seeping oil all over, and the whole tractor looks like it pretty much needs some attention. After thinking it over for a couple months I have decided to give it the once over and give it a facelift. By the time I get the Tractor Mechanically in shape much of the Patina will be jacked with and how is the tractor going to look with new rubber and fixed up rims? With all things considered the best thing for this one in my opinion would be a Resto. More to come. ~Duke

1 pointDefinately sounds like your carb, onans are very sensitive when it comes to even a small amount of garbage in them. Mines doing the same thing, I'm planning on draining my float bowl and giving it a deep clean. Yours sounds like one or more of the tiny holes on the idle jet are plugged (the small jet facing you when you take the bowl off)

1 pointRexman...you are right...a few years ago, the Big East was a huge, major conference in basketball. I wish I knew what was going on with all of these conference changes. The Big Ten will have 14 teams this coming year. Colorado in the Pac 12??? Nebraska in the Big 10?? The next thing that happens is we will have Appellation St. in the same division as Michigan. Watch out for rivalry weekend!!! Anyway...some of this tournament is about the conferences...I just thought it would be nice to know and look at it from a different angle.

1 pointMy children and their spouses all have iPhones and for the most part they love them. I on the otherhand have a Samsung Rugby Smart (Android Smartphone) which I absolutely hate. I am getting ready to purchase a new phone and still have not decided what I am going to get, but it will NOT be an iPhone nor a Samsung. I must have one that has a removeable/replaceable battery since Smartphones and iPhones, if using data, consume batteries like crazy, and I hate having the phone go dead while nowhere near a charger. So having said that, GOOD LUCK with the new iPhone. The Tapatalk app (ape) is my favorite, as it allows me easy access to RedSquare.

1 pointI am an expert on these 603 Special's. I have about 5 of them. They were produced as an economy tractor and sold for a little cheaper than other WH's of that year, 1963.The steering wheel is correct and that is the only year they used that half moon steering wheel so it is pretty rare. The footrest's are correct also, they used up alot of old parts on this model tractor. They usually have the older style of footrests on them, but if they ran out of the old stock, they used these new stirrup style footrests. That big hitch on the back is not correct though, somebody home built that.The rare one year only choke and throttle levers are intact and they are hard to find usually. The seat spring is mounted backwards but can be switched around to be correct. Looks like the correct 6 hp Tecumseh engine. The mower deck is the right one but it could have a square deck on it too either one is ok on the 603. that plow looks like a very nice WH plow. Looks like a pretty descent 603 Special, so you better go get it before somebody drags it off. Good score on that one, hope you get it Ken...Here's a few of mine! KJ

1 pointWell, not only does coke taste good and eat the enamel off your teeth. The phosphoric acid in coke also eats right through rust. Makes you think twice about drinking that stuff lol. I used to use a the finest grade steel wool when doing this but apparently tin foil does a great job at scrubbing also and does'nt scratch the chrome. I have not tried the tin foil yet. I have only read about it. They also make chrome cleaning products you can by at auto parts stores but the coke has also worked well for me. Soak the parts for stubborn stuff. Just filter it and drink after your done.....

1 pointSo I got home tonight and fired up the 520 to run it some..... and maybe just to play a little I only ran it for a few minutes yesterday because of my nieces Birthday party. Today it ran much better. No more miss at all. It was missing and would puff a little ploom of smoke when it would hiccup. It must of been the old gas. I drained the fuel and put non ethanol gas in it yesterday. It must have worked its way through. Now shes purrs. The planets must have lined up in a row today. My girlfriend said can I drive..... "me" ofcoarse you can.... "her" I dont like this leaver to make it go, I want a gas pedal. Do they make a tractor like that? ..... "me" Well its funny you say that .... There is a kit you can buy just for that, its only $200. lol Its really hard not to get some seat time on it but I must be patient I guess and pull the heads and adjust the valves. Thanks again guys.
