Just waiting for the tail of the storm with a few more inches to fall. I used the Ariens to clear most of it and cleaned up with the 518xi. I even had the C-105 out for a little exercise as well. Notice the sidewalk superintendent checking my work.

Just came in...thought I'd get a jump on it before I went into work. Wasted time and gas though...more snow fell in the hour I was out there, then was there before I started.

I'm tired of all this snow already, I don't mind the big storm's its all the little one's I'm tired of. I think its Steveasaurus's fault we are getting so much this yr.. He was complaining he had NO snow last yr. Rumor has it that this past fall he was caught in full head dress doing a snow dance with a bottle of Scotch in hand...

Don...you did not bulk up for winter did you??? Those few extra pounds can make the difference.

i I went to myTaiwanese doctor today for a check up. I gained 6 lbs from last time. He wasn't 't happy and I told him it was for plowing snow. He didn't believe me. I had to show him the picture of your avatar!!!

I encountered the same problem on my blower on the C-125A. I put washers around the flag arm until I got the height I wanted- right now 6 of them- I can take out or add washers as I need- Thanks-Al

IMHO... Toro didn't buy out Wheelhorse to promote Wheelhorse. To the contrary, the buy-out was to eliminate the competition.

Not to rub it in rdmanone...but I am going to plant palm trees here in Chicago this spring....the snow belt is moving south towards you. All it takes is a little shift in the earth's axis...and a small magnetic shift. Illinois is going to be the Sunshine State...

Dang it...you guys are having way too much fun. I want to be where it snows 8" and you have to get out there right now before it melts. Are you kidding me...this year...you have to get out there right when it is done snowing before the temp drops to minus 10 real temp. And guess what...it snows again every other day...not a lot...just enough to drive you crazy. The horses are getting fat from all the carrots and apples I am giving them to get them to start. Glad they are Kohlers . Although, I have to say...my tecky 3.5 Ariens has been great...but I am running out of Wisconsin cheese to dangle in front of it. I know I am sounding like I am complaining...I am not...this is one of the best/worst winters in my lifetime. I am going to make it...and I am going to remember this one like I do the blizzard of 1967...the snows of 1987...the cold of 1983/4. This kind of winter is the stuff memories are made of. Guys in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia...all of the snow belt. The memories of the horses going out and doing the thing they were meant to do 40+ years ago. Thousands with no power, but the horses started and cleared the snow. This is what it is all about...anybody can cut the grass. One other thing...NO BUGS!!! :) :)

I have been using my Lawn Ranger's STR-324 snowthrower all winter. I felt like the snowthrower did not have as much lift to it as was needed to easily move around to the next area to tackle. I was working in the street in front of the house and realized the snowthrower was too close to the ground -even when lifted all the way up. So I got out the manual for the STR-324 snowthrower ( Also Model 6-3211 in the implement manuals) and found that the original drawing listed a set or shaft collar of 3/4 inches to be placed on the Lift Flag for added left capability. I was surprised to see after putting the collar on the flag and lift rod that the snowthrower lifted almost 6 inches off the ground in the front of the tractor! This was about three times what it had been. The collar did not need to be set with the set screw and is probably less than a half inch wide but the use of the collar definitely raises the snowthrower more than not using one. I am not sure if this shaft collar is noted in other snowthrower/snowblower manuals made by Wheel Horse but I will make sure to use it from now on. I took sever pictures (no before shot without the collar but the snowthrower was about two off the ground) which help tell the full story. The Wheel Horse engineers really new what they were doing 50 years ago to be able to create this type of lift off of a less than 1/2 inch shaft collar! In this photo you can just see the shiny new collar above the black snowthrower chute handle : I recommend using one of these on your lift flag to help with your snowthrower if you have not already placed one on your tractor.

got the 520-H with thrower stuck at base of our friends driveway down the street..weird grade of main road to the driveway. the Frau pulled me out with the 416-8!!!

This guy just loves the snow and follows me around like crazy. I'm going to have to get a double seat so he can ride with me.

Just got in. Snow turned to sleet / freezing rain. On top of 10 inches. Posting a couple of pics of my oldest Mike for the photo shoot. Glenn

Frams are junk. Use Napa (Wix). I cut open an OEM Toro trans filter once. Nothing to write home about. Wish I took pics. If I ever get a hold of another used one I'll take them. Napa 1410 is a pure Hydraulic/ power transmission filter built twice better.

I used to think that you had a magic wand like Brian does but now I think Mike's right..... It's a carpet.

Terry, Thank you for the excellent pictures. I cleaned and verified everything from top to bottom and finally decided to just put it all back together correctly and see what happens. Due to an upcoming storm, which it just started snowing here in NE PA and we are suppose to get 10-12" tonight, I felt a rush to get this back together. I started the reassembly around 5pm est and just finished now. I took my time, used pictures I took and the manual that was shown to me. I cleaned everything and actually put it back together. Once the tranny was assembled, I started reassembling the tractor itself, taking my time cleaning along the way and making sure everything was correct. Long story short....the beast is back in business! Im excited that I put the tranny back together and it actually works. lol I believe there were some factors that contributed to what was happening but I believe the biggest was very old and low tranny fluid. Im glad I took the tranny apart because I was able to clean it properly and Im sure it appreciate the new fluid. I would like to thank everyone that gave me guidance on this project. I would not have had the courage to do it without the support. I joined the forum for a year because I wanted to give something back. I can say without a doubt that the old Wheelhorse tractors are unstoppable if taken care of. I actually think this summer I am going to disassemble and repaint, just because it deserves it. I attached a pic of the reassembled tranny and my beast ready to go tomorrow morning! I say bring on the some tonight as we are ready. Thanks again all!!!!

The batt tray is welded to the frame and the steering wheel are 2 clues it's a 1963 In 64 the batt tray is a bolt on, and has a 2 spoke steering wheel

One word of caution...at this point. When you open this trans up...do NOT take out the shafts with the shift forks on them. There is a detente ball on each side of a spring in the casting between the shafts...TT in another thread here lately said he had a heck of a time trying to get that stuff back together. If the transmission shifts now, you do not need to touch those shafts. I think the manual tells you what side of the trans to take off...make sure that is the side you remove. TT got it back together, but if TT had a tough time...that is enough for me to try to leave those parts alone.

With some certainty, my bet is that the tractor frame-plate is cracked where it bolts to the trans. There are 4 bolts making this connection. If it is joint cracked, that will allow the the tractor to 'flex' and the pin (concentric) to pop out of the nylon cam. I have repaired a few of these with the same problem. It can be done without welding, although a welder can help. This thractor is a 520H, but the repair for the C-160 is identical.

If it's the same tractor (S/N 400410), the logistics were the only thing holding me back from bidding to win.

Quick update on Pax. Compare the bird bath with the second pic above at 8:30. Put down about 6 more inches in 2 hrs. Yep, that's 18" Still snowing, but the wind let up, so I guess it's time to take the horse out to play. I took the blower side extensions off. I need more height not width. . .

Yes that jingle is very dated and is not the best. On the subject of advertising, one thing that always comes to mine with me is one of the reasons Toro started to diminish Wheel Horse then altogether stop production as we all know. Is because they stated that sales just were not enough to warrant keeping the tractor. How many times have we heard or seen a radio or TV add or even a printed add in the late 80's or 90's concerning Wheel Horse garden tractors. Oh I am sure there were some here and there but nothing compared to John Deere or Simplicity and even Cub Cadet. Toro had adds for their ZTR's and push mowers just not Wheel Horse. To me you can't sell em if you don't let the public know there out there. You can't just depend on people that know about them. You got to attract new people. As far as I can see Toro did not do this. At least I never remember ad's for them compared to the others. Not to mention Dealers carrying other brands right along with Wheel Horse. I have seen Simplicity on the same showroom floor as the Horse and the dealer pushing Simplicity. I know there are other determining factors that I don't understand in play here. I am just saying compare the Wheel Horse adds back then to the other and they are darn near non-existent. Common sense would tell us that you can't sell em if nobody knows about them. My personnel opinion is If Toro could not make the huge mega profit from them then get rid of them. Sorry to hijack the thread but it all seemed to fit in the advertising scheme of things. All right I am done rambling now.

Thanks!! Something like Steve's is what I had in mind, but a bit simpler, with the ability to lift it with the lift cable/chain for faster/smoother transport. I knew already that there were blower 'caddies' available to attach to many machines (I have a ZTR as well), but I was thinking of a more 'budget friendly' approach.

Martin, frankly I think you spend entirely too much time on your restorations -- what you need to do is clear your mind , think pleasant thoughts, breath thru your nose and practice more this coming weekend. Then you can go at it again the first of next week. Nice work !!!! Rick

Bad news. The trans is leaking at the crack in the pics above. Tried to fill the trans with diesel and the crack started leaking. Looks like it will need to be welded up. Any suggestions on welding the trans crack. Inside our out? Also the trans is leaking at both seals at either shaft. This project is getting tougher by the day. Steve I took a look at your 2012 sow pics. I bet that show is a blast. Looks like u had a great trip. Thanks for your help. Chris

Fortunately I haven't had to install the blower and cab, but I dread the day that the neighbor sells his truck and plow and I'll have to become self sufficient for snow removal again. I just don't even want to think about this fat old man trying to get into and out of a cab on a C series tractor. Maybe it's time to set up a pair of tractors and Tom Sawyer the other neighbor and his boys into snow removal service

Sorry, too far from the show to make it. Here is a picture of just one shelf of "stuff" the other side of the shed has a larger shelf that is also filled up. I also have shelves full of parts and engines in my shop.

Round Two. I am very impressed how this old horse runs. 8 years ago it was all kinds of trouble, now, its like a new tractor. I'm thankful for tearing into and just starting all over with the wiring , fuel lines, carb , governor and so on. Not to mention all the great info hear. Its 10 degrees. Fired right up , left it warm up, open the throttle and it never misses a beat. Not a single hiccup.

What will you be using this winter to clear the snow?

FINALLY have the crew together (including my 48" squeegee ) for this year's winter weather. It started off nicely in December, and hopefully the rest of winter will be full of snow!

i got so worked up about steve painting that blade of his, i just knew i needed to redo the blade on this one now before winter. nothing better than red paint shining while pushing some snow. so i took it into work yesterday and blasted/powdercoated it. put it together this morning with mostly new hardware and mounted it on the 416. did a bit of driving around and then decided i needed to paint the black on the grill as its looking a little shabby..... looks like its going to need decals and a seat now.......

This is my fleet for winter I just switched the blade for a sweepster model c 48 rotary broom. I can't wait to try it in the snow.
