Hey.. i have done some upgrade on the horse and put on 4 bolt's on the front wheel's.. i have been thinking of that for a long time but never found the right part's for it.. but i finaly found a trailer hub kit that i bought... So here are som pict of what i did.. that axel was about 10 inch long so i had to cut it down to the right lenght.. and then i drilled a hole innside it about 1.5 inch and then it fit's on the original 3/4 spindel. And time to cut some more and both ready for some welding Finish whit welding time to try them on the tractor.. and as you can see they also has a greasepoint.. had some 10 inch trailer wheels that i put on so i could move the tractor and wait to ill got the other tires mounted on the rim's and finaly they are on the tractor Going to paint the rim's later dont have the time to fix that atm.. other project's whit higer priority.. I don't know...this one is a mid '70's, eight horse Techumseh... unstoppable beast she is...only comes out to play for the serious snows. So much fun at night, WOT, and a six inch blue flame shootin' out of the exhaust.

I haven't posted for a long time but I haven't stopped horsing around! I came up with a plan to teach my son how to repair small engines and learn the fundamentals of mechanical repair. He and his friend could help repair and sell to purchase another one and do the same. I also happen to be a Wheel Horse addict so this helps me with my obsession too. I found a Wheel Horse in the local classified add that looked like it would make a great project. After many e-mails and calls I finally was able to set a date and time to go check this hidden treasure out. When we reached our destination the old girl was sitting lonely and cold under a ragged worn out tarp. I had no idea what I had found because the sticker just said Wheel Horse. What more do you really need! The sellers inherited the tractor and did know much about her. They just said it was fun to ride on. It was missing one rear tire chain and the weights seem to be gone. They thought it had a mower but couldn't locate it. I offered $100.00 and took my chances know the motor had compression, wasn't seized and the tractor had a plow. He said yes and off we went. the old girl up We brought her home and warmed the old girl up in the garage. I still had no idea what she was but I knew it was worth a $100.00. The boys and I spent some time cleaning the leaves out, draining the old gas and checking the oil. We didn't take the carb apart or look at the spark plug yet I was too excited. We jumped the battery and she started right up. It sounds great and the automatic drive is sweet. Now the boys are Wheel Horse addicts too and they think we should keep her for our very own. It has hydraulic lift for the plow as well. What a cool fun find from 1968!

Just picked up 5--30# vibration dampeners for a CAT diesel. Think they will make good wheel weights?

Think I started around 1982 til 90-91.It was great.Got to go to a few update schools and work with some great guys.. One of the best part of the job was , to keep us employed in the winter months , we got to rebuild trade-ins to like new condiction. We went thru each tractor complete. Motor,chassis,mower deck , tranny , even the paint on every piece. Doing this made you learn the unit very well.Great memories growing up.Made me love my Wheelhorse , of course!

Mike, if I get enough snow to get out the Ariens...a video will follow for sure...count on it...dang I hope it starts when it sees white. If it does not start...I will do a video of pulling the rip cord to death and just maybe a shot of the Mossburg 20 gauge putting it out of my misery.

Martin...I think a sulky with that milk stool to sit on and Jeanine would be happy...LOL I give you a rough time my friend, but I really appreciate you guys friendship...it was great to see you guys at a few shows this year...plus going out to dinner. Glad to hear your on the mend Scott. Good to see the Young-ens sticking with the dirty hard graft jobs at this stage. They will be even more enthusiastic when they see the results and the clean shiny bits pile up ready for assembly. They will probably be pestering you for 2 evenings a week then. Great work. Regards

you need to look at what model ariens blower they are, some are built with the cheaper components, but like anything move up the scale a little (more money) and they still have the heavy components. i have a 2009 deluxe 24, the smallest one with the heavy duty xs gear case, you really need to look at the line up closely and you can tell where the heavier duty specs start to come into play. i also have no complaints about the b and s snow series 1150 engine. plenty of power and loves grunting through the deep stuff. i couldn't be more happier with mine, sure sometimes i wish id got a bigger model, but the 24 gets in all the tight spots i need to and it takes anything i can throw at it. that shot of jasons up earlier in the thread reminds me of an earlier winter where mine was cutting through some real deep snow. it would tunnel a hole through and the snow would be dropping on top of the blower. it will push through snow up to the handlebars..... i also baby this thing with maintenance and waxing it. my wife gives me crap about it but i threw down some serious cash and i want it to last......

Scott, this is truly an amazing project you have going here with these kids. If I was in a club like this 50 years ago when I was their age, I would have gotten straight A's in the four R's... Readin', Ritin', Rithmetic, and Rebuilding a Horse!!! Would be nice if your workers had portable work benches or "wooden horses" with plywood tops to work with small parts while standing or sitting on a stool or something. Seeing them working on the floor hurts "my" back. Seriously, you are doing great! Continued success with this club and all future projects that come along.

You can also break up the RED with some pin stripping...my Dad did all his horses and attachments.

I saw one popped up first thing yesterday morning...15 minutes from home. Seller listed a T1267, virtually NOS 50" sickle bar, and solid 48" deck. All going to scrap by the end of the week...make offer. Trust me, that's how you sell a tractor.

just finished a face lift on one of my 1886's. I love these tractors. they came out in 1971 and were a beast of a tractor. full hydraulics on front and rear, foot pedal hydro, three point. huge solid frame. this machine caught wheel horse with there pants down. who would of thought. bolens had those crappy tube frames. in 1971 all wheel horse had in there line up to compete was the gt14. to compete they came out with the automatic 18 (d series) both wheel horse and bolens used the 18hp kohler k482 engine. this sparked a little battle to one up each other. bolens ht20, then wheel horse d200, wh d250 then the bolens ht23 and bolens added an imported diesel model. this battle gave us so many models to enjoy. if you're a car guy, it's worth the read!!! Went to California for a biz trip the last couple days and on Monday I got done a little early so I decided to check out the Tesla AND the McLaren dealerships a couple blocks from the hotel. I have seen a couple Teslas on the road in Lincoln and have always wanted to see one up close. I walk in, they have two model S's and a chassis on the showroom floor. Got to talking to one of the "ownership advisers" for about 1/2 hour. All of a sudden he said "hey, you want to take one for a spin" I said "does a bear sh*t in the woods?" He went to go check the schedule, came back and said "you can drive a standard model now, or in about 30 minutes, you can drive the FAST one!!!" I said without hesitation that I'll wait, he said "I like your style"!!! I went and checked out the McLaren dealership a block down for the 30 minutes, and came back ready to go. I got behind the wheel and he directed me to the hills. At one spot he said..."now, when you get around this corner, hit it and hold hold on" He didn't have to tell me twice...I turned the corner and put the hammer down, now...I must preface this by saying I have driven the hemi roadrunner I put together last winter and didn't figure I'd be too impressed. IN NO WAY WAS I EXPECTING WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!!!! This damn thing gets to full horsepower AND torque INSTANTLY!!!!!!!!!!! I was going 70 before i could even think about what was going on. I took it hard through the windy roads of the hills of Palo Alto and was SUPER impressed with the way it gripped and the low center of gravity is amazing. I got to take it down the interstate and I hit 82 MPH before I was even half way down the short on ramp. They have the demo cars governed at 82, the production ones top speed is around 135MPH. The huge screen in the middle of the driver and passenger is a touch screen that controls everything but the power windows/mirrors. For the life of the car it comes with FREE 3G service for browsing and navigation (you just can't watch You-Tube videos) While we were driving he said "lets see what a station in Serbia is playing" within 5 seconds, we were listening to ethnic Serbian music. Now, I know the price is a bit high (the one I drove was about $110K) but I really think they have something going here. I couldn't have been more impressed with the car and would love to own one (they are coming out with the economy model next year at a starting price around $35K) If you want more info on it, Google it, there is plenty out there. I had an ABSOLUTE BLAST and would hope some of you get the chance to enjoy a test drive (or purchase one) in the future. Chassis. . . AC motor on the left, inverter on the right. . . EVERYTHING is electric. . .power steering, brakes, AC compressor. . . BIG A$$ touchscreen!!!!! Front AND rear trunk space. . . HEAVY loaded floor model ~$137k Charging port is behind the "triangle" portion of the taillight....totally hidden!!! Here is the one I drove!!! Some McLaren Pics... Tried to get a Sno-Pup video but it is almost impossible. Need 2 hands on the Pup. got a short vid of the C-160 in action. Had to run it at partial choke. didn't realize it until I got done that when I unplugged the battery tender I forgot to plug in the electric fuel pump. It was gravity feeding the whole time

Same thing happened to my 522xi. Granted mine is in northern NY and used 2 -3x a year under those conditions, -10 is common. It also has 1100 hours and is left in an unheated shed. I started the tractor and discovered the problem. I covered the engine compartment vent holes with a moving blanket and let it run at high throttle for 30 min or more. It was still tuff to turn but once I was able to turn just a bit it was freed up within minutes. I cleaned the filter Steve mentioned, honestly it was clean. I believe that there was some moisture in the oil, it's 10+ years old. I drained the hydro system and refilled it this past summer. Hoping it helps. Tell your friend to drain it, change filter as well. Put a few hours on it and change the hydro fluid again.

I think you'll be well over a few thousand by the time your done . Better you then me. I'll let someone else drop all the cash into something then buy it from them when they're bored or hard up for $0.20 on the dollar .

that 310-8 is a good tractor , it was going to be scrapped when i saved it , then i knew van had a motor so i sold it to him and now you have it! ill say it again Nice Tractor & i know you will be happy with it . Heres 2 pictures of your tractor when i brought it home. Jay

I like your engineering. I did something similar to mine 24 years ago. Had a front wheel that would not keep the bearing tight and cut up my spindle. The tires wouldn't hold air, I just changed everything. I had to tighten the right front bearing a couple of months ago is the only thing I have done since the change. I know you will like the new hubs. I have 6 ply rated tires on mine and it steers a lot better.

You better eat your Wheaties if you get a big storm! Of course it started right up with no snow. That Tecky sees the snow and cold and it will say "yeah right" My 2 cycle Tecky was running like a champ a month ago. Now with the snow, the cover's been off twice and the carb tweaked. of the old Ariens!

Buckrancher's stainless is to die for...that is the TOP SHELF!!! I do not know how you would top that...maybe gold leaf and Candy Apple Red...would love to see that next to each other. Brian's stainless and WH Red is the excellent combination of 2 colors that raises the bar. The fact that he added a deck to that horse, this last year, made it a match made in Heaven...Absolutely Outstanding!!! In my opinion...it is "Best of Show" no matter where he shows it.

I have an old Ariens walk behind snow blower from the late 70's...has a 3 1/2 hsp Techy on it...it started on the 1st pull a week ago (I went out and bought a lottery ticket). Of course it was 50 degrees and no snow, just getting it ready. I bought it new, and it has really never let me down. You have to be talking about the new stuff, I don't know how you get around that except to keep the old stuff running.

Great job man! I really like seeing this and your attention to things like PPE. Nothing's better when a parent stops by and sees their kid wearing masks for dust, goggles and gloves when needed. I wish I had this kind of opportunity in elementary school. It's quite interesting to see those kids' interest in the hobby. One thing I would consider if I were you is to find some pieces of 1" thick high density foam for the kids to sit on that concrete floor. I would appreciate that if I were them especially since I have to sit on a concrete floor quite often when I'm in my shop. I like how the restoration isn't some half-effort. Bare metal is a sign of a quality job for sure! Charlie

I think that Ariens changed just after the anniversary year of 2009. Tecumseh left a big hole in the market and Ariens was forced into Chinese-built engines. Marketing and selling through HD didn't help as well. I've heard stories, for example, that "the next 100 off the line were for HD" and sent out without too much Quality Control. That may not be true. But a real Ariens dealer would pay attention to detail and adjust the machine before it went out the door - instead of just being completed by a HD employee. I question when I see "B&S engine built for Ariens" considering that B&S owns Snapper or a model that uses Ariens own engine being built in China. Look at the fiasco that Kohler has with the "Courage" engine.

Guy I work with has an old A/C blower he calls "Alice" Between the gas leaking and the flame out the exhaust he can melt the snow!

My grandfather had an old Ariens. I think around a 62 or so. When I I was in college in 77 I came home to see a new Toro in the garage. didn't think too much of it. A few weeks later, another new Toro show up. So now I ask him,what's going on. He starts ranting how the Toro's are junk and aren't half the machine the Old Ariens was. So I ask him why did he get rid of it and buy the Toro? He tells me he stripped the spark plug hole. So I tell him he could have fixed it for $5.00! Now he was really mad!

Ummm... can you be more specific? I love mine... it's a 2011 and works like a dream. (last year's example... haven't needed it yet this year)

Wheel-N-It, Have not had time to mess with it. Just shoved it into the dead line and got a different tractor going. I had 3 tractors go down within a hour of each other. Don't know if the planets were out of sink or some gremlin decided to take up company with Murphy and expand his law or what. After this holiday and we get through are lake effect snow dumping I will get back after it.

So this is the final week for the Big 10. You think this year's games were good, just wait until next year when they expand two teams adding Maryland and Rutgers(I believe these are the teams added) I am going to take Ohio State and then the rest home teams. Then we have Iowa vs Nebraska and if you think I took Nebraska guess what, NOT going to Happen It's the Iowa Hawkeyes with a Big win in Lincokn, Neb... I think I should do ok. Hopefully to come out on top. I hope that everyone here in the Square has a very Happy Thankgiving As always,never doubted, Go Hawkeyes!!!

Hey Matt,that's a neat story.My father,who was on here,passed away last year and all of his stuff was left in the shed just as he had left it.All his plans,problems,ideas all went with him.He passed suddenly so i didnt get a chance to go over what all he wanted to do with it all.I know some things but guessing on the rest.He had given me a 66 buick skylark(almost the same as my first car) suprised me with it for my 45th birthday.I have been collecting parts for it for the past two years and finally started on it a couple weeks ago.It turns out it needed too much work and the parts are just not available.There is no way he could have known as it was very heavily coated with bondo and what was under it had rot away.Looked good but was hiding a lot of trouble.I didnt want to do it but the car has to go and I was fortunate enough that I have some of his tractors now to work on.So like you,I am going to put more love than money into them and try and get them back into shape again.Hope to get started here real soon.Keep em going! I wear hearing protection religously! My family has history of hearing loss and I don't want to suffer the same as I get older. I was ignorant when I was younger and never used hearing protection - didn't really know people used it except for stuff like shooting guns. Hearing loss is permanent and those who suffer with it unfortunately miss out on a lot of "life". Hearing loss is really frustrating and the person with the hearing loss is not the only one who suffers! As far as smelling like exhaust, is the tractor possibly running a little rich? I don't really have any problems with smelling the exhaust and I'm running stock mufflers on all my tractors but those with custom exhaust/stacks may be able to give you better ideas.

I have been looking for about a year on and off (but not seriously due to funds to purchase). Well last night I came across an ad on CL for this 1949 Chevy 3100. It is from Kansas and all original and untouched. As you can see from the pictures it needs some work but I really like the year/model and color of this one. The last time this was registered was 40 years ago (the year I was born in 1973). Someone took the time to seal off the carb and gas tank with plastic. The motor is looked up but I think it should free up with a little work. Either way I think the motor will be coming out in the spring or earlier for a refresh. I have no plans of repainting this truck. At most I will clear coat it and maybe some touch up of old pinstriping. I am really looking forward to this project. It actually looks pretty good next to my new mini barn....
