I'm in the last phase of my project and trying to determine where to put the stops for the front end pivot. The question is, can you have too much front axle articulation? It looks cool and as a driven axle it definitely benefits from all wheels on the ground... What do you guys think?

My first post here. Just got a 312-8, rear scrape blade and plow from Van in NC and a Johnny bucket from Bill in Va. Both super nice guys. I chewed their ears for a while on the capabilities of these little tractors and got their opinions. As I was telling them, I have a 78 Sears Suburban that I am tired of fooling with. I found a 416-8 that I thought could "replace" it. Am I off? Do they compare? I am looking at moving dirt with the bucket, scraping driveways and paint a small garden. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I haven't posted for a long time but I haven't stopped horsing around! I came up with a plan to teach my son how to repair small engines and learn the fundamentals of mechanical repair. He and his friend could help repair and sell to purchase another one and do the same. I also happen to be a Wheel Horse addict so this helps me with my obsession too. I found a Wheel Horse in the local classified add that looked like it would make a great project. After many e-mails and calls I finally was able to set a date and time to go check this hidden treasure out. When we reached our destination the old girl was sitting lonely and cold under a ragged worn out tarp. I had no idea what I had found because the sticker just said Wheel Horse. What more do you really need! The sellers inherited the tractor and did know much about her. They just said it was fun to ride on. It was missing one rear tire chain and the weights seem to be gone. They thought it had a mower but couldn't locate it. I offered $100.00 and took my chances know the motor had compression, wasn't seized and the tractor had a plow. He said yes and off we went. the old girl up We brought her home and warmed the old girl up in the garage. I still had no idea what she was but I knew it was worth a $100.00. The boys and I spent some time cleaning the leaves out, draining the old gas and checking the oil. We didn't take the carb apart or look at the spark plug yet I was too excited. We jumped the battery and she started right up. It sounds great and the automatic drive is sweet. Now the boys are Wheel Horse addicts too and they think we should keep her for our very own. It has hydraulic lift for the plow as well. What a cool fun find from 1968!

Your new 312 should handle all your chores just fine. I didn't understand your comment on the 416? Are looking to get a 416 as well? If its a Kohler single its an awesome combination, an easy to maintain single lung Kohler and the 8 pinion 8 speed tranny. If its an Onan equiped machine its very capable as well, although it needs a bit more maintenance. But other than a 2 stage snowblower your 312 will do it all. Mike............

thanks guys a few pictures this morning in the daylight... can you have too much front axle articulation?
  10. 2 points
If it didn't chew the ends of the axle for around $ 100 you could replace the whole dif and leave the others whole. I say that cause I have one out.

Van is right - I had the pleasure of meeting Scott and family and he brought his Wheelhorse with him and we mounted the scoop. It was 25 degrees outside and that tractor started like it had just came out of a heated garage. I deinately invited him to Red square and the Wheelhorse show in PA.

Thought I would pick first this week. I feel better when the vultures are circling overhead for a longer period of time. I thrive on the pressure and the thrill of the hunt.

Since the winter is getting closer i had to put some tractors in storage. I have a storage room in the same building as the garage / workshop. which should be slightly warmed up just so it's degrees above zero not sure yet if i have time to do it before it's get to cold.. made a shelf in there this summer to have the suburban 551, so I can get a tractor under it well she's on the way up.. whit out any problem's thanks to this winch im going to mount it on the wall later because that will be much better.. and here she is on her storage place And she got company of 3 other horses in there to and if i do some more cleaning i can can get 1 more horse in there... Tried to get a Sno-Pup video but it is almost impossible. Need 2 hands on the Pup. got a short vid of the C-160 in action. Had to run it at partial choke. didn't realize it until I got done that when I unplugged the battery tender I forgot to plug in the electric fuel pump. It was gravity feeding the whole time

I would vote for the 416-8 over the Sears too. Before I lost my mind and flooded the backyard with tractors, I had two. IMHO, the two tractor, same series wheelhorse plan is very desirable. You got commonality between tractors, Learn one tractor and apply that knowledge to both, and you always have a backup. Good luck, Bill

You need to open the draft controls and let it burn hot for up to 30 minutes every time you load up the stove, depending on how big you split your wood. You have to have to burn the moisture out of the wood and have some heat go up the chimney to keep the creosote from forming in the chimney. A good rule of thumb is, if it still looks like wood it's too soon to shut the air off. I heat my house with 2 wood burners, one on the south end of the house and one on the north end, I clean my chimneys once a year and don't get a 2 gallon bucket of creosote from both chimneys combined. I burn only hardwoods, mostly hickory and ash plus a little bit of maple and elm early in the season when it doesn't take much heat.

Persistence works! Congrats on working it through to a successful conclusion. If you remember, one of the first things that was mentioned was to check ALL grounds.

The charging system is finally working. Replaced ignition switch Started engine and had 13.60 volts Went up to 13.75 in a couple minutes. Drove it around yard for a few minutes then checked again 14.20 volts. Maybe i did have a ground problem. The only thing that was different was the plate that the ignition switch mounts was not attached to tractor, just laying by shifter. I guess it needed to be attached to ground the switch. Correct or incorrect. Trying to learn all i can. Was thinking about the 24 ac volts in headlight circuit. Is this right: 24 volts x 3 amps equals 72 watts. 2 sealed beam lights 35 watts each. I didn't think about checking voltage in that circuit today because i was so happy the thing was charging. the lights are burned out anyway. What do yal think? Also found out today none of the safety switches are working, maybe just cleaning them up they will work

Mike: Scott sent me pics of the 416 today. It is definitely a M16 Magnum. He wants two Wheel Horses, and I believe he will be able to handle most any LAGT chore with the pair. Van, need a tiller. Maybe I get one in Pa. Peanut wants to go. He kept saying "yay tractor".

It gets better. A few weeks ago the owner told me that in the 70's he was a wheel horse dealer, in the town of Lone Tree , Iowa. Now we have a connection with the tractors and the football.

Van...peanut hasn't been on it yet. We got home last night about 0230. Then I saw that 416 I texted you about then to work. Peanut will get a lot of rides for sure. Thanks for all the help again.

Scott ! Hey I found a pic of your new Wheel Horse. This pic is one I sent Scott before he drove 2&1/2 hours to my house to pick it up. I did not post this pic in the other thread I started because I thought I had lost it. Scott you will see in the other thread (started yesterday) where the pic of your tractor has a 10hp MAGNUM engine in it. I had that engine laying around the shop but had not heard it run. I stuck it in the tractor first as it is the original style engine for what you have. Good thing for you as the 10hp engine smoked really badly and did not have much compression. So out it came and in went the K301 12hp engine that you now have. With the red K301 engine you have a few more cubic inches and two more horse power. That little bit does add up. So how does Peanut like his new Wheel Horse?

re the 416-8. the seller took a tentative offer. he is second owner, but he is not sure of hours and such. the tractor looks GREAT, but i dont want to purchase a paintnjob, i need something to work. i have been doing my home work and i think right now i would prefer a twin cylinder over a single, subjetc to change on that idea. he said he would keep me posted re sale. i like it has deck and blower. i found another with a cast iron kohler single,,,,,760 hours on it. back to looking, thanks guys for the comments. does anyone prefer a twin vs. a single? Glenn

Thanks Steve! I guess I should explain. The pics of the axle shaft are an attempt to show the crack beside the key slot. The metal was swollen here and required a little time to get it down so that it would slide out. The pic of the forks is an attempt to show where I had to polish the ball bearing path to remove the burr that was locking everything up. Sorry, I couldn't get a good pic of this. Thanks to every one for the help, I am learning a lot, however, I think it will be a very long time before I can call myself a mechanic .

If it's any comfort or not, had this happen to a GT-14 and the hydro still works fine.

I would not waste my money on Synthetic until I was sure the pump and motor valve plates and slippers were not damaged. The screen only gets the big stuff. The small stuff is more than enough to severely damage the plats and slippers. The filter only filters the oil after it has gone by the plates/slippers. If you buy a used transaxle you will still have to address your pump which I am 95% sure was damaged by all the metal running around your system. Sorry to be pessimistic but You really should pull the pump and go over it before you waste a whole lot of time.... I went and replaced the pump and the motor on my D200 ( both from "good working tractors") still had issues. Bought a couple more pumps and motors (again from "good working tractors). Swapping parts and spending a lot of time polishing valve plates and slippers i was finally able to come up with a good pump and a good motor. She is a strong girl now.

Yeah, that chair has almost run it's course. It is starting to disintigrate. I already took the arm rests off, couldn't get my fat butt in the chair with 'em on! I have another seat that resembles the two-piece WH seats to go on. I just need to cover it with vinyl first so I can just wipe it off and go when it is covered with snow.

That bottom I think your talking about is part of the bearing. knock it out just like the others. the 1533 bearings, if they're good, just leave them in. if not, they're hard for me to get out without wrecking them. I got a pair out of a trans once by setting the case in an old gas grill and putting one burner on low for a while and heating it up. they seem to popout then..(or i just got lucky). but I made sure everything was cleaned up in a parts washer first.

B-1212 is 3/4 bore, 1" OD, 3/4 wide. The correct fit for a drawn cup needle roller is about .0005" per inch of OD (in cast iron). My bearing list is out in the cold garage, but B-1212 sounds right.

I'm not sure i would sell my old 416 for $1500 if someone put the money in my hand. To speak on Kohler powered WH's only, I would say the Kohler 16hp single cylinder 8speeds are a must have for any Wheel Horse collector who works their equipment. So the point I am trying to make is to me, $1500 is not bad to invest in a 416-8 that has been sandblasted and nicely painted with new decals. Of ourse along with that, the engine should be quiet, have a tight carburator shaft, good compression, and start easy. Also it should have a excellant mower deck (48" SD preffered), and another attachment or two.

I put nylon washers under mine to keep from damaging the paint. Secondary effect is that they don't seem to vibrate out.

Seen this and could let get away after the Mayrath did, It a 1948 R7 Shaw Du-All. its a runner driver with a ZZP B&S which runs great and starts on the first pull.Has brand new tires on all 4 too. It came with the cultivator and 10" mold board. The PO painted when he first got it some 30 yrs ago and it still looks good. He did infact use it for farming a 5 acre plot of sweet corn till 94 and has sat since. It needs a need a carb cleaning and thats about it. It'll look nice along side the other oldies.
