4 pointsBack in May I took a road trip to Henrico NC to bring home a one owner 414-8. The tractor came with a really nice 42" SD mowing deck, a nearly brand new mule drive, a Brinley rear mounted scrape blade, and a sleeve hitch. The tractor is equipped with all the linkage for the rear lift system. This is a HUGE PLUS for me as I have been wanting to add a Wheel Horse to the herd as a perminant tilling tractor. I already have the tiller. I had an extra tiller bracket, so after the paint dries it will go on the 414 along with the tiller. I'll post some pics of the tractor with the tiller mounted after all that is married up. Jay-in-NC made me a super nice custom weight bar for the front. It clips right onto the front where the mule drive goes. Here are some pics for your weekend enjoyment!!!

2 pointsAfter almost 2 years after purchase, we drove from Beaufort SC to Winston-Salem NC to claim the 701. The seller was supposed to bring it to Myrtle Beach and save us a bunch of driving but it never happened. Oddly enough, when we were about 20 minutes out from his place I noticed a trailer in front of us with a restored 701 and another round hood sitting side by side being pulled down the road on a red trailer. As we passed it occurred to me it had been 30 years since we had sold our 701 and it's implements, which was the last time I had actually laid eyes on a wheel horse. Having said that, it was an uneventful trip back through my home city of Charlotte NC back to Beaufort. The 701 is in very sad shape, having set outside for obviously decades. The shifter is sheared off above the pivot. The L steering arm to the spindle is broken off where the roll pin goes through, and the belt cover is missing off of the Kohler. The seller told my wife "everyone" wanted the mower deck so I suspect the belt cover was a quick sale item to one of the lookers. The wheels and seat pan are rusted out, the mower deck is holed and pitted. Other than that it is a complete 701 replete with vintage battery and liquid varnish in the tank and sediment bowl. I have some other wheels to fit, so that will be step 1 followed by vacuuming the leaf buildup around the shifter and in the tool tray. The 7 horse spins, but I didn't get too aggressive without some lubricant in the cylinder. It appears all the hardware is now melded with it's respective sheetmetal. Some PB blaster will be in order prior to any attempt to remove the lugs or hood bolts... Guess it's time to pull it down into chunks and try my hand at some electrolysis tank immersion... I bought a new dash, throttle cable, muffler, rear hubs and adjustable implement lowering device while in the Middle East... Good Times Ahead!

2 pointsThose of you in the UK may well remember the Hamlet ad.... Well I found some big tyres 18 months ago and have been waiting for the right wheels/rims. A whole £5.50 got me these bad boys 13 inch tyres on 10.5 inch rims. Unfortunately the offset was way out so they needed surgery. The welds were cut through A gauge was made to set the offset All welded up And waiting for some paint, with the tyres alongside Busy week ahead what with work and the meet down in Ardingly, hopefully I'll get them painted and fitted soon!

2 pointsI recently picked up a throw away 312-Auto for the cost of hauling it away. Was told the motor was good so I drug it to the trailer and drug it into the garage. After making sure I wouldn't fry a coil from my 857, I had the 857 donate it's gas tank and filter to the 312 and fired it up. I have a video but it's too large a file to post. The good news is it fired right up after priming with no smoke at the start or during the run. Sounds good too. The best things in life really are free! I'll have a few items from this tractor besides the motor to keep in a box. The hood and pan will be made "available".

2 pointsThis is how I modified my mats. All the rust on the running boards was in the front and back bends, so I cut the mat and now just blow all the grass clippings off, wipe out the snow. I was able to re-use the original mats.

2 pointsThe best Wheel Horse is the one you have in your barn that starts up and does the job you need done. I personly have a highly modified C-120 that has been getting the job done for the past 36 years.

1 pointWelcome to RedSquare! Putting a smaller drive pulley on your transmission and a bigger pulley on your engine should give you some extra speed.. Gotta remember though, regular wheel horse garden tractors were not designed to go really fast, so you got to be careful when you make them go faster.

1 pointMy Spirit of 76 C-160. Smoked like a chimney when I first got it. A little Seafoam in the oil and working it hard cleared it up. It does all my mowing and most of the snow removal. Customized lift lever for one hand operation. Electric fuel pump installed. Killed the hydro pulling a fertilizer 3 yrs ago. Rebuilt with E-bay parts. Nice comfy seat. No tear downs on this tractor, just work. 817 hrs.

1 pointI got a Generac WH style jenny and home made mount from Bearpath at the show.( I believe Duane told me the mount was made by Kelly} I took it to a friend of mine who's retired and does fab work for gas money for his bass boat I only had some pics to go by. A little different but slick and very well done. Need to get a belt to see if the jenny works then I'll tear it apart and paint it. My added touch. Casters to move it around

1 pointA condenser hanging off the tins suggests it is a coil based system - but it could be a botched conversion attempt. Coil based ignition would have a set of points / points cover in the "classic" location for the K series engine (fuel pump, then cam cover, then points cover). Oddly enough, the spec # you list shows both options available - breaker-less and points. The demystification guide shows a 1986 312-A has a points based ignition. If it is a breaker-less ignition, there will be a small trigger box near the top of the flywheel with a wire leaving the trigger to connect with the breaker-less version ignition coil. The trigger box will be fed off a second wire going to a charge coil on the stator. Sorry for the non answer but check again for the points cover - if it's not there, check on the flywheel for a trigger box - and while you're in there - pull the flywheel to confirm what amperage stator is present. If there is a charge coil on that stator, it's for a breaker-less ignition. This is why I don't have a great understanding of the 300 series - always something going on with different "versions" of ignition systems and charging systems. Surprises at every turn with the 300's.

1 pointthe 18 auto has a shorter sterring colum then the 74 and up d series and also the dash parts on the sides and the from 1/2 steel grillsurround/front hood mount is also shorter other then that the d series use the same parts

1 pointDon, I liked your post, but thought I should explain. I'm glad you had a grand time, but sorry about the furlough. Hope it doesn't last long. We have been on four day weeks for a couple months now. I like the 3 day weekends but what a bite out of the paycheck. Best to you!

1 pointVery nice looking tractor. Maybe some day my 200 will look that good but that is a ways off - function before fashion! Best part of the deal is the spare pump, transaxle and (hopefully) trans motor. D's are a lot of fun!

1 pointWhen I was a kid in the 70's a guy the next street up from me had a MINT dark green 2 seater AMX. It had a 390 with a 4 speed. I remember his having side pipes on it. He didn't drive it too much but when he did you could always hear it. It was a pretty mean machine.

1 pointVan, I've got a 126 - nice machine. Also have a 109 with a well worn 10hp engine. That engine, as tired as it is, pulls the mower great - even in the tall grass. The 10 hp in the gear drive 106 should do even better. Good luck, Bill

1 pointThis was the first tractor that dad and I tackled to clean up and put back in to good working order. It was the feature model for the 2012 WHCC show in Arendtsville, PA where it was revealed. We had a great time and learned many things through the process of doing our first machine. We were pretty pleased with the results and have had a lot of fun on it. It now has the correct seat and is getting a sickle bar mower cleaned up to install on it. Here she is........

1 pointIn 1974 my father bought a brand new C160 Automatic, 36" RD deck, dump cart and Parker Sweeper to replace our junkyard Springfield. During my mowing years, I used this tractor every week. We didn't have a snow blade or blower so it was a summer tractor only. My father passed away in 1991, and my mother kept the tractor. When I bought my house in 1993, I bought my brand new 416-H because of the experience with the C-160. Well, my mother moved and no longer needed a tractor, gave the C160 to my brother and God knows what happened to it but sad to say it's gone. I had wanted to have a father / son project and thought what better tractor to get than a C-160 Automatic. Looking around all I could find was an old Electro and C-120 Automatic. A short time later Eldon (kj4kicks) found a C-160 somewhere in the midwest. It ran but wasn't much to look at. He offered to go pick it up (he was going that way anyway) bring it back and trade the Electro and C-120 for it. I agreed because it would complete the cycle from my father, to me to my children. Well, I went to pick up my C-160, expecting to get a rusty old tractor, but instead I received this: It turns out that with a collection from the members, and Eldon's awesome talent, he dismantled the tractor, painted it, and put it together. There was only a few odds and ends for me to complete. It was a complete surprise and I am still in awe of what everyone had done for me. This is one C-160 which is truly a RedSquare tractor, and it is my entry for this month's category!

1 pointI give it hell with one of them knarly wire wheels on my angle grinder to take it to bare metal. I then use a D/A with 220 grit, I then wipe it all down with wax and grease remover. Be real carefu; if you use the knarly wire wheel method, they can do some real damage to you if you aren't careful.

We have some very knowledgeable Horse-A-Holics on here who are real life savers.
