Hey, I haven't been here for awhile, so I figured I better check in.... Still playing with the horses. I finally finished my Dodge Brothers hot rod, so I'm getting ready to build a couple new horses! Here's the build on the DB, from the beginning... http://www.ratrodsrule.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26759

tried to buy this tractor three years ago but the owner would'nt sell she sat by a shed in the weeds in his back yard I was driving by there a couple of weeks ago and decieded to stop and ask again the owner is in his late seventies and he still did not want to sell her as he was going to fix her up I stood around and talked awhile with him about tractors and other things for about a half hour and before I left I gave him my business card from work and told him to please call me if he changed his mind that next saturday morining at work I recieved a phone call and it was him and if I still wanted the tractor to come and get it he needed some money to fix his truck after a little TLC she runs pretty good Brian

This should help. If not, could you please post a pic of the parts you have? It may help determine if you have the right parts or not.

Well, since I first replied to this thread back in August of 2008 the herd has grown from one tractor to four, with three working mower decks, two mid-mount grader blades, and a couple of trailers. A lot of people have houses that cover more square footage than my tiny lot at home, but I still have a lot of fun. I live close to an Ivy League college and the upper crust driving by in their Beemers or tree-hugger-mobiles do give me some awfully strange looks when I have all four tractors parked on a lawn the size of a proverbial postage stamp. I chuckle, for what they don't know is that I have an "arrangement" with a real estate developer friend (decent, honest guy) who has a very large lot just down the street from me. I keep it mowed in the summer in return for storage space in his barn and free use of a beautiful lakefront house in northern New Hampshire. So if anyone thinks I'm weird, I just remember that opinions are like rectal openings - everybody's got one! all the way to the lake! Duff

It hits the lift bar is what is causing it. I use a 1/4" fine tread set screw in mine. Had a grease fitting with the top wore off in it for years loss that to.

Lane, there's a few of us Minnesota guys thinking about a road trip down. Last time I checked, rydogg, TerryM and joebob were all on-board. Just have to make sure it fits everyone's schedules.

30+ years of grass dragging along the bottom and occasionally scraping the ground would wear you out too.... Working in engineering as I do I am often amazed at how something as seemingly harmless as spherilized plastic pellets can wear right through the side of a pipe or hose. Decks generally are made from soft steel that will bend and deflect easily so that they can be formed in a press. This lowers manufacturing costs, yes beeter materials would last longer but would eventually wear through as well. Also most plant juices are slightly acidic so leaving clumps of grass and plant juice caked on the side of the deck shortens the life also.

Michael, on behalf of the European members, we would appreciate your support in allowing shipment outside the US. I've been fortunate to be able to read through both editions, but would love to own a copy of the final edition. thanks mark

Just my humble opinion, but after all the trouble you have gone thru with this engine-why not take the time to get new valves and matched valve guides? I find it hard to believe an engine ,with a cam in this condition, goes not have abnormal wear other places too. Good Luck-Al

WOW!!! What a great job. But what's that old car doing hanging on the back? Just kidding. Looking through the entire thread was like watching West Coast Customs. Great job on that 1927 Dodge Brothers build.

If that cam is as worn as you say you better replace the tappets/lifters or the new cam will be junk in no time.

To try to answer the original question, Id say most likely ego. If Mr Jones turns out on a Sunday with a shiny 16hp its only a matter of time before Mr smith needs 18horse...the old green eyed monster.

Started off building planes as a kid, but got bit by the car bug at some point. Of course, I do still have those AMC specific kits squirreled away.

My neighbor lady was just out mowing with her pusher. She gets done and keeps the engine running across her gravel drive throwing stones all over and then doesn't shut it off until she's in the garage throwing trash all over the place. Then I got noisy back yard neighbors that have parties all the time. I got a dual air horns off of a boat aimed at their yard and when it gets out of hand I connect them to my big compressor.
