So I got a new(relative for me as I had a 21" push mower) 520hc with the 20HP onan. My yard was so big I had to split the push mowing into a 2 day festival! When I was 35 it was no big deal to do it in one day, but as age marched on I found my stamina diminished... or maybe it was my patience. It would take a solid 2 hours just for the mowing(21" my arse as overlap eats up an easy 4"), weed whacking added on another 30 minutes and blowing off the walk and drive another 10-15mins..... numbers which became ingrained in my head after years of servitude. And yes I have kids, but all female(with grass allergies) so a definite no go with pawning off the job to my kids. A little back story..... my next door neighbor is an older gent and I often head over to help him out with projects he can not handle on his own(cleaning the siding on a 2 story, moving furniture etc etc). Every winter(snow storm) I run my snowblower through his sidewalk and driveway as I am already out there doing mine so why not do his(guilty conscience would not let me sleep if I saw him shoveling while my sprite 49 y.o. frame was using a gas powered blower). Well my older neighbor contracted with a lawn service about 5 years ago and has not used his wheelhorse 520hc. It was sitting under his deck gathering spider webs and dust. It would not start. He calls me over to see if I can get it fired up, so I say no problem I will take a look. I pull the battery and stick it on my charger overnight. Next day comes and I check the gas tank, dry thank goodness. I put some fresh gas in and crank it....... nothing. I disconnect the gas line which hooks up to a thing mounted on the side of the motor. Gas is flowing to the small metal object but not up to the filter. So I prime the filter line, prime the small metal box, and throw a squirt of gas into the carb for good measure. Turn the key and the bad boy starts up and purrs like a kitten. My neighbor is quite pleased, liked my trouble shooting skills and congratulates me on a job well done. I said no problem Jim, its what neighbors are for. He then asks me if I want the mower/tractor. I told him I was thinking about getting a ride on but money was tight (a perpetual problem in my life...remember I have 2 daughters!). He says to me the price is right. I ask what the price is. Now to make all of you jealous I got it for a song and a dance(clothes on of course). The price you ask? He tells me I already paid for it, just drive it over to your garage......... SWEEEEEEEET! I ask him are you sure? I tell him this is to much for me to take without paying. He insists. I again say it is to much and he again insists I take it. I take it...... never refuse too much as this can be insulting to the giver. So now I have a wheelhorse, time to do the entire yard now= 1 hour. Start to finish machines cleaned off, edging done and walk and drive blown off. Of course I researched the brand and found this site, so I thought you all would enjoy the story. And this thing is a beast, a heavy duty beast.

I have never seen it written any where about driving over the deck, When I had mine that's the way I did it. Just put some helper boards down and up and over I went. I told are local dealer that and he said thats the way they do it. Then I just use a pry bar to do the little nudge here and there. Way too heavy to slide. I suppose there are other ways but for me the drive over worked just fine. Your not going to hurt that deck.

I had a new tab fabricated, and today I had it welded onto my belt cover. Thank again Brian.

As of this writing, there are less than 45 days until the big show. [sharedmedia=finalCountdown:countdown:2] Will you be there? What will you be bringing? I am coming with my 1977 B-100, !968 Commando 8, 1961 701, and a few other miscellaneous do-dads. And for Squonk, yes Mike, I am bringing donuts. But you better find me fast, because they won't last. You know where I will be camping, and I will be there Thursday morning, bright and early. I can't wait!

I've been wanting to do this for a very long time...needed to do it. Pictures of the process... Hey, there is house back there. Needed some of this Oak trimmed also. Done trimming the Oak, and I got to keep the fire wood. Out come the shrubs. Setting up the new look. Planting the new with the mulch. They just put the new sod down yesterday. What a difference. No horses or people were hurt...cool. Thanks for looking. Sod is done and bushes are starting to bloom...the 2 little bushes are burning bushes...should be great in the fall.

Headed out at 6:00am this morning to go pick up the 1054 from Duane. It's a 3 hour ride each way and had to get back in time for dinner with all my family. Also brought home some parts that Docwheelhorse bought from him. The 1054 is great condition. Looks all original except for the seat. Even has a single rear red light on a plate which looks original bought not sure. Gave it a very quick bath as a had to go to dinner with the entire family:

Added LED lights to the back of my GT14. I also added a 2 function electronic flasher. I have a 3 position (ON-OFF-ON) rocker switch to operate the lights. Think I can be seen? Click for video.

While I was deeply involved in working on the 701, I heard the whinny of a small horse. There, standing alone and looking for some love was this little fella. He appeared to have four nice shoes, And his eyes were clear, So I looked for a 'brand' and found that he was a 1967 L-157 His saddle was still on and looking pretty good. But then upon further inspection, I found that his connecting rod was broken. Won't know what else is wrong until I get a chance to open him up. His lift handle is missing, and apparently, there is a hitch in his git-along, as the transmission appears to have some internal problems. All kidding aside, I found this little guy for sale on the "other" Wheel Horse forum this morning. After a call at 9 am to awaken the owner, I picked it up this afternoon. Good news is, my wife really likes it.

Rwilson, I have a problem with your post... which is that it is about keeping them clean... I have never had mine clean in the first place. I do scrape out the deck every time I change the oil (usually about every 4-5 mowing sessions), and I do all the regular maintenance one is supposed to (lube, oil, air cleaner, etc. ) The deck has some surface rust underneath, and has lost a bit of paint on top, but is otherwise sound. the other problem with your analogy is that you have not seen my car... I wash it twice a year whether it needs it or not. I am trying to imagine riding on the tractor through the carwash... my kids would love it

It could be that the hour meter is not working, I have only run it less then an 30-40 minutes since I got the motor running. (Sheared Flywheel key). It come into the local scrap yard and they unloaded it with a large grapple resulting in a crushed fender and many scratches. I straitened it out to where it is now just so the rear wheels would turn.

This is my first Wheel Horse I bought it new in 93 and have been using it to mow 2 1/2 acres weekly ever since. I have not had to replace much on it and most stuff is original. I have had a lot of horses come and go but this one stays around.

I still mow with my 704 every week. For you thats bad at math, that 49 years old. I have newer tractors but love my 704.

It may just need the de-carbon service and have the valves adjusted if that has not been done. Some do the service to get over 2,000 to 3,000 hours out of their engines and some don't bother and just run the engine until it destroys itself. The ONAN P Series needs the de-carbon and valve service after about 500 hours and I would not go beyond 1,000 hours without doing it unless you don't mind replacing it.

Coil is uner the flywheel and point are on the left front of motor. If you got any snow up under the flywheel it could just be rusted up. Remove fly wheel to see, clean up with sand paper

Hello friends, My father passed away in July 2011, and he always wanted me to have his Wheelhorse, as he knew I would always take very good care of it. I have kept it started every few months, but just haven't had it in me to take it home until just the past week or so. I know it needs to be at my house so I can enjoy using it, and keeping it in tip top shape. It's a 1979 C-161 Automatic, that he bought new, and that was always taken the best of care of. He did rebuild the 16hp Kohler a couple of years before he passed away. It has a snow blade, wheel weights, tire chains, lawn roller, mower deck, and a small trailer with it. I have already learned a lot just from browsing this website. Looks like you guys have a lot of fun here talking about your horses ! Nice to meet ya. Kyle ( Bluffhunter )

So in search of a parts tractor to swap engines with my current 417-A I found this one! Sure is a little rough on the outside, but the engine sounds good when cranked over with a battery. Due to it sitting for about six years it's going to need a little work to get it going. Between the parts on my other 417-A I think I can get this engine going. Came with a 42" plow and new tires for $200.

Thats a fine looking one owner 314. Good thing with that much acerage you opted for the 48" deck. I did the same thing in 91 when I bought the 312 you see in my avatar. It certainly was a good investment. How many hours are on your tractor? Amanda I guess this means you were two when I bought mine. You didn't even know what a Wheel Horse was back then. LOL LOL LOL

You will not be able to get the shifter under that brake crossover shaft without doing more damage than you need (my advice is take the brake part out it's much easily that way) been their and done that And I don't think the brake assembly was in before the transmission was installed at the factory. Stevasaurus, the tranny went back together beautifully — thanks to your guidance! Those videos that you shared are indispensable . The proof will be in the pudding, when I get back in the saddle and tell it to giddyup! There is no way to guide both shift levers up through the frame rails, because the brake cross-over shaft (from the brake pedal on the right to the brake linkage on the left) is in the way. I will either take the tranny off once more and angle it down to try to sneak the hi/lo lever under the brake part, or I will have to dismantle the brake assembly to get it out of the way. But this will have to wait a week, as I am off on a photographic safari, north along the New England coast. Fenway Park tomorrow evening (I am, for what it is worth, a NY Yankee's fan) and in Maine for lobster by Wednesday. So it probably won't be until next Sunday that I have a chance to work this problem out. If anyone else has run into this problem, I would love to learn just how you solved it. This whole project has been like a wonderful puzzle (and,so far, I don't have any pieces left over!).

I know I'm going to be shot down in a thousand pieces for saying this but I don't use full throttle on any of my mowing horses. During peak growing season when the four leg horses can't be let loose to graze on all of it then there's several acres to mow every week so getting enough seat time is hardly a problem in fact we often have three of us out there getting it. It's field grass rather than lawn and lots of bumps but even so anything less than top gear is too slow but top gear with the throttle back a bit seems fine to me and the decks don't seem to have a problem with this at all. Ok so the blades are turning a bit slower but the WH is advancing a bit slower too and It also uses noticeably less fuel. Now to get even more shot down...... I love mowing with the C-120 auto but I don't run that at full throttle either. It's real advantage is being able to stop, back up a bit, then go on again without changing gears as well as controling forward speed independantly of engine speed. I accept it may be a whole different story if you're looking for perfection in a lawn cut but for fields with the decks on their highest setting 3/4 throttle works for me and even the C-100 has way more than enough power at less than full revs. Now for the flack .......incoming!
