Thanks to all for your well wishes. And yes a bruised ego, as the nurses called 911, and in 3 minutes, the Emergency Squad pulled up, lights flashing and 7 of my friends who are all firemen and/or EMTs came running when they heard the address. And, yes we live right on Main St., and yes they wheeled me out on a gurney for the world to see! I could probably have made it to the squad, but they all "grunted" me down the steps to the waiting sqaud. When you live in a small village, everyone knows everything going on, and I'm sure I was one of the topics at the daily,6am "Guy Gathering" at the corner Dairy Mart. But thanks to all of your kind feedback and if my mishap can impress just one person to BE CAREFUL, then it will be worth it. Handle these SOLID STEEL HORSES with respect!

Hi Gang, Thanks to Karl, I am going to have the books available on the Red Square Site at the exact time the Wheel Horse Show begins. There will be payment instructions and I will ship them when I return home. That way it is fair to everyone. I will make sure that plenty are set aside for those who can't attend the show. As I said, I want everyone to have one or two. It is my last and best book and there will not be a reprint. I ask that you do not wait to order when you see them posted. Once they're gone, that is it. Hope you enjoy it! Michael Martino

Thank God there are Angels here amongst us...sounds like, for those good deeds, you were richly rewarded that day. Always amazes me how...when you need it most, the help you are in so in need of, is so close at hand. Glad you're OK.

if you want to go new, try a harley coil if you cant afford a kohler coil........ the coil was $40 with shipping, if you have a bike shop close, then you could pick one up there. you need one for points ignition (around 5 ohms on the primary). you need to make up a bracket as its a different shape than the oem round coil. or you could find a used kohler coil...... i picked mine up off ebay, search 12v ULTIMA IGNITION COIL FOR HARLEYS FROM 1965-1979 W/POINTS

Hey guys here are some pictures of what I have been working on for the past couple weeks. Finally finishing it this weekend so I can get started on a 42 RD. Had the deck blasted and took the spindles apart to grease them since there are no grease fittings. Wire wheeled the mounting assembly and and the pulleys. All parts got a coat of Rustoleum Self Etching Primer and thee coats of Rustoleum Regal Red. Sure did learn a lot restoring my first deck! Underside got new blades and a heavy coat of POR15. I'll get some more pics postes as I finish it up this weekend.

First off, let me say.... I love my C-160 and hold no animosity towards it - just because it came off my loading ramps and fell on me. When I tried to load C-160 by myself, I took "Special Kind Of Stupid" to a new level! I was so excited about having plowed two gardens yesterday morning, (for no $, just great seat time) and was enroute to two of my old school Amish friends, who asked if I would plow their garden plots, and I said sure. They have to borrow a team of four draught horses from a mile down the road. I know both of them very well and was excited to "turn over the ground" ........ they assured me that many wheelbarrows of fresh horse manure had been applied last week. Here comes the stupid - I placed my ramps securely on my trailer and got on my tractor. In the past I have always put the tractor in Low Range and in "creeper gear" so as to be able to stay in control. Yesterday, I left it in High Range and chose my lowest gear and pulled to the end of the ramps. The RPMs were too high, and the gear too high, and when I let out slowly on the clutch, the tractor lurched up the ramps about 2 ft. and then the front lifted straight up and came back over on me. I was able to have the presence of mind to roll the tractor ro my right to hopefully avoid snapping my neck. The tractor ended up (still running) on my left left leg and cut it fairly bad (25+ stitches) and some other contusions and abrasions all over. But all will be ok. Fortunately, two ladies who were driving by and went around the block and come back to my aid. One of the ladies was the wife of where I had just 2 hours prior, plowed their ½ acre garden. As it turned out, they are both RNs and saw blood everywhere and took over. Enough details, BUT- To anyone who even thinks about loading a 750# tractor without help, and then don't use the right gears, and say: - "I done this many times, what can go wrong"? I know many of you are asking yourselves the all important question: - HOW IS THE TRACTOR?? Well, it only has a slightly bent steering wheeling! But other than that ready to plow....... those old C-160s are invincible!! I'm not, but they are! Score: Wheel Horse C-160 - 1 One, 68 yr. old, who did a stupid thing and learned a valuable lesson - 0 Well enough of my pity party and yammering - hope my little episode will be useful to someone.

After my Avatar pic was taken I installed 8" wheels on my 312-8. I left the stock tall spindles on it, and like the taller look alot. I would not go with the shorter spindle. In fact I am thinking of putting the taller ones on my 416-8 or 417-A. I have an extra set here at home.
  14. 1 point
The 300 series tractors with the 6" wheels use a taller spindle than a standard (8" wheel) spindle. Putting 8" wheels on one of these tractors does raise the front around an inch unless you swap spindles. Tall spindles (from a 312-A):

I found that a brush is much easier and that paint smooths out well. It goes on thicker to gie a better amount of protection. No overspray to deal with either. I would leave the transaxle on. I have restored several this way and while they are not show tractors, they look real nice. See attached examples.

Len, That is a nice tractor for sure. I would take it apart, pressure wash and degrease it then do it again and then one last time. If you are looking to just clean it up I would use IR Red from Valspar in NON Restoration series. Mix some up with hardener and brush the frame and transaxle. I would use rusto aluminum metallic in a spray bomb for the wheels. Do a good job on prepping all the tins and then spray them a gun and make sure to use hardener and thinner, (Use same ir red). paint the engine with a semi gloss high heat paint. Last thing is to get some decals trom redo your horse (vendor here-Terry is a great guy and does great work). Take your time putting her back together. I would make your son help you as he will remember it for a long time. Good luck !

Joe, I know what you mean about the manual vs hydraulic lift/control. The down pressure is a little touchy with the hydraulics, but after a while I got the hang of it. (Sort of) It is just like any other sport requiring hand-eye coordination. Practice, practice, then more practice. And after tearing up part of the driveway , I get to practice!

I'm going...don't need to buy anything...don't have anything to sell. Just need to get out of the house for a nice day with excellent people. Maybe this year, I can get to the food tent before all they have left is hotdogs with no buns. Would not you have a bun for every hotdog???

I was walking through the parking lot of my local Advance Auto Parts store today and I heard someone yelling at me. I looked around and didn't recognize any cars or people that I knew, but a few seconds later, this beautiful silver car pulls silently up beside me. Driving it was a friend of mine whom I had not seen in over a year. Seems that last year his wife died. He took out a reverse mortgage on his house, cashed in the late wife's insurance policy, and sat around moping and feeling sorry for himself. Well this guy always had the latest and greatest tech toys, but none of them were making him feel better, so last Friday, he took delivery of his brand new 2013 Tesla Model S electric car. For only a cool $94,000.00 dollars, he says he's feeling pretty happy. So I got in, buckled up and we hit the road. He stepped on the accelerator and OH MY GOODNESS. My body sunk deep into the back of the seat as this thing went silently from 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. The dashboard is all digital as you would expect, and in the middle is a touchscreen computer that has everything you could imagine. Anyway, when I have more time, he has promised to let me take if for a test drive. I don't think that I would want to own one, but it was a fun morning. My camera phone was not behaving, so I only got a picture of the inside, and this does not do the car justice. The other picture is a stock photo that I pulled from the net, but that is what the car looks like.

Using a roll pin punch should make short work of it.

Good news, got my lawn aerated with a tow behind core aerator (read seat time... ), fertilizer and grass seed sowed (read more seat time... ) and last night we got about 2 inches of wet snow, so the ground is covered in a way that I could never water it - and with the melt, a nice even watering of the lawn. Today it's supposed to get into the 60's and up into the 70's next week. I should have some greening of the grass shortly. I might ought to get the blades sharpened and a deck in place sooner than later... Thanks! Bill

I am a user of Seafoam also. The variability of gasoline sold in the U.S. (now by season for emission controls) and with various content of ethanol and other refinery additives seems to be more of a concern today than engine/motor fuel use to be. That said, Saeform is an old product. Used and developed in the 1950's for motor boat motors. I have found Seafoam to be a useful product and much better than Stabil in maintaining quality of the fuel and not gumming up any of the works.

Have you tried Toro for parts in UK ?

You hit the nail on the head! Has anyone ever had that roll pin break on their Cub Cadet when out in the freezing cold pushing snow? I have and it ain't no picnic replacing that roll pin! As the old saying goes, something is only as strong as its weakest link and in this case its a 50 cent roll pin and plenty of aggravation.

Got the grader blade painted up, and made a replaceable cutting edge for it. I will probably never wear this out, but if I should, I can remove it and flip it over and go some more, saving the edge of the blade. Got a chance to play with it a little today, taking off a few high spots in the driveway for a trial run. I will wait until the frost is fully gone before I do any more, but sure had fun while it lasted.

Josh, you either have 1/ a shorted ignition coil 2/ an ignition coil which requires an external resistor - and you do not have a resistor attached 3/ you are using a "high performance" coil with a low resistance primary meant only for use in transistor based automotive electronic ignitions any one of the above can fry points due to excessive current draw in the coil primary wiring.
