Many years ago I stopped, talked to a guy about a Golf diesel sitting in his yard. It could hardly be seen due to the brush growing around it. I wanted it for parts. He had a very very unrealistic view of its value. His 2 acre site was filled with, I believe, mostly junk. But he did have a Model T(I think) and really enjoyed talking about it. He talked about all the many people who had stopped to ask about it. And he was NOT going to let it go! Someday he would fix it up. I wasn't interested in buying it but noted how the wooden wheels had long ago sunk into the ground. Now, twenty one years have past. The last time I drove through that part of the county it looked like the ground had absorbed most of it. There is nothing left to restore. Very sad when people don't know when to let go, move on, make the best of things. This WheelHorse was fun but it had sat for the last 4 years without my getting back to it. I guess those were the things on my mind. Too many projects, too little time....time to move on. Looks to me, the D has found a good home and the respect it deserves.

Well I went for a roadtrip today to pick up a few Wheel horses to add to my growing herd. The first one was a 1965 WH 875. It appears because of the chrome strip and the chrome plates on the hood that this must have been a special edition for some reason. If anybody knows anything about that please let me know. I also noticed on the 875 that there was a decal with checkered flags saying Powered By Kohler. Just an idea. Thanks for any replies in advance! The second one I picked up was an 857. I didn't notice anything special about it just the big headlights

Hi Guys- Yesterday we attended the Awards dinner for the Mishawaka Cavemen 2012 football team. Everyone had a super time-and it gave us the opportunity to Honor these exceptional athletes. The point was expressed over and over how these young men not only showed excellence on the field but off also. The head coach said he had not had a more coachable, eager to learn, and respectful bunch in his 22 years of coaching. My grandson Trevor didn't bring home any special awards, but he was so proud just to be there with his "brothers" as he called them, Trevor had taken on some of the kicking duties of the team-which leads me to a brief explanation of the video clip-I'm afraid I didn't do a good job of recording it-but heres the jist- The kicking coach is explaining that Trevor, when the team practiced at Loftus Arena-Notre Dame, kept asking the head coach if he could try a field goal in there-the coach said"I dont think so". Then after Trevor kept working on him, he said-"I will give you one try-if you make it you ride home with us on the bus, if you miss, you walk"-Trevor agonized over this challenge all practice-then decided to try it-he kicked a 30 yard field goal and made it! He rode home on the bus next to the coach as promised! Thanks for looking at my pics-I'm a sentimental old Illini- but this is what life is all about-Thanks-Al http://s267.beta.pho...ner006.mp4.html

There are currently two tillers posted for sale on Ebay by Dave's Tractor World? My question is what tractor will the Idler assembly pictured mount on? I have a C160 that I need an Idler assembly for and all the Idlers that I have seen pictured on your site do not look like the ones pictured. They have a dual pulley on one end and a single one the other. They also have a curved shaft and not the straight ones. Would they work on my C160.

Well, i thought i would make the 3 1/2 hour trip north to Michigan for my next tractor. I arrived at the auction 1 hour early and i could tell right away it was going to be a bad day. Cars and trucks were already lined up on both sides of the road a mile from the auction site. I made the walk to the auction and waited in line 40 minutes to get a number. I started looking around and could tell this was a very rare and unbelievable auction and i was glad i had made the trip. I went immediately to find the RJ, wow was i disappointed. It looked way better in the pictures but it was restorable and had the sickle mower (that wasnt advertised), so i was still interested. I waited around for about 4 hours, (buying nothing in the meantime) for them to get to the RJ. Finally it was time to bid, i set my limit at $550. The bidding was on and before i knew it, I had raised my hand to $650 like it was nothing. Thats where the bidding stalled for a second, thats also when i remembered the 13% buyers premium. Which means i was into this Rj for over $700, then finally either the auctioneer or the clerk put in a bid of $700 so i was out. Not only was i out of a wheel horse, but the 7 total hours of driving, $100 in gas and 12 hours of my life. I did end up buying a reel mower with a briggs engine for $20. That was my only regret because i had to stand in line for an hour and 15 minutes, with a 20 dollar bill in hand just to pay for it.(poor check in and check out set up for sure) but i love auctions and wheel horse tractors, so i take the good with the bad and have as much fun with it as i can.

You probbaly have 7" wide rims with 23x8.50x12's on em right? I wouldn't go wider than 9.50's. Plenty of guys stick 10.50's on those rims but I think it makes them "ballon out" and you get less rubber on the ground. Mike...........

Literally, a friend of mine who works at a landfill where I used to work called me. He said an old wheelhorse tractor came in a dumpster. So, last week I went to pick it up. I walk into the shop and there sits a RJ58!! It was rough, but in restorable condition. The worse part was that someone cut the back of the hood off to put an 8hp Briggs on it. I was lucky enough to find a real nice one on eBay. So, another project begins....

Well it was 50 Deg. here yesterday so I worked on getting the team ready. I have made some up grades since last year. The 1st is I went from 8.50's on the 76 which is the plow tractor to 10.50's. I loaded them with beet juice. The tire, wheel, & juice add up to 103 lbs each. Also got a new set of chains for the 10.50's. 2nd is I picked up a tall chute single stage blower from Kelly awhile back. Got it mounted up on the 75. I have a short chute, but am not a big fan of the cable turn. Have a few things to do to the blower yet. I want to install a new chain, fix some dents in the auger, & then lube every thing up. Hope we get a little more snow than last year. Used the plow 2 times & the blower 1 time last year. Not alot of seat time.

$500 to $1000 they should have sold... between the $270 belt guard and these these guys.. now you know who you are dealing with. Back to the subject RJ... did the sickle bar go with the tractor too? If so, then with an all together price for the tractor, mower deck, sickle bar and buyer's premium... IMO anywhere in the $700 to $850 range would hnot have been a bad price.

Thank you Tankman for staying on top of this thread. So for now I will think it's a 1986. I checked the engine numbers and the engine is at least a late 1985 model, so the tractor being a 1986 makes sense to me. I'm happy to hear you got the steering wheel roll pin out, those things can be a bugger. I guess it's my turn next to do that surgery. I do have the slider on the seat but no gas spring. Thats ok with me, its one less thing to replace. The tires on mine which I am sure are the original ones are 23 x 9.50 x 12. I think it will be wise for me to replace all four, as the front and rear tires on the right side will not hold air even for a day. I don't mind replacing the tires though, I want this 416 to be something I am very proud of when finished. BTW, I will probably put 10.50's on the rear. I think the rims are wide enough to handle the increased width. Also to add, I did get it running yesterday afternoon. The engine has alot of compression which is good, it does not smoke, knock or make any funny noises which is also good. It does need the usual stuff though, like cleaning the fuel tank, replacing the fuel lines and adding a filter. I should rebuild the carb, replace points and condenser and spark plug wire. Tankman, thank you for answering my PM question yesterday. I really do like the seat you have on yours. I replaced the seat on my 312 this summer, and was not able to find a universal seat bolt pattern that would match up with the sliders and hinged seat bracket from a 520H that I was going to use on my 312-8, so I had to use the original hinged seat bracket for the seat I bought. I drilled a couple of new holes in the old seat bracket to move the new seat back as far as it would go . Does anyone here know of a seat that will match up to the 520H seat bolt pattern?

Very nice cleaning job! Looks great, a worker for sure. Not an '85, must be an '86. The dash has the monitoring lights, my '85 ('88 414-8 does) does not. Looks like the steering has the same usual ailment. Been soaking the steering wheel for a week or two now but, did get the 1/4" x 2" roll pin out. Removed the battery and bent the upper panel inside flange down tightened up the steering until I can remove the assembly. Working fine. The '85 does not have the gas spring or slider assembly on the seat. The '88 does. Both the '85 and '88 have 23 x 8.50 x 12 rear tires. Yours look great. What size are they? Either way, a great Horse. The 416'll be the leader of the gang for sure.

I had a couple of C-111 tractors. Kind of wish I had kept them. The briggs engine is strong and very easy to start, but mine vibrated a lot - to the extent it would work the air cover off the air cleaner. The aluminum block make the front end lighter in weight and the tractor was a dream to steer. The tranny is an 8 pinion and has 1-1/8 inch axles. Mine had a 36 inch rear discharge deck and gave the best cut of any tractor I have owned. They are a good tractor for the $$$'s in my opinion.

The 633 was the kohler powered pull start, the 603 was the tecumseh powered pull start, there are 2 other odd tractors, the 1045 and 1046, what does the 4 stand for both are elect start stick shifts?, those 2 are not round hoods, also the 867 1067 1267 the 6 stands for the new that year 6 speed trans "1967", in 1968 they started naming the tractors and dropped the number system.

I can't aford high dollar machines, so i usually buy machines that are in need of repairi have over the years have had several kohlers rebuilt, fixed alot of wiring problems and replaced alot of parts. i had a freind who just past away in may who was 97 years old he did alot of work for me in the begining, but i learned to do more and more my self as i went along. i try to get my tractors mechanicly sound and all back as should be then i don't have much problems with them after that. if they make me too mad they get sold or parted out, but that don't happen to much i generally only sell to make room for another, but i'm finding it harder to let them go but i am seriously getting out of room. would like to find a enclosed trailer to store 6 or 8 tractors in and then be ready to go to a show on a moments notice hopefully one day anyways

Using the same Champion plug on four Kohlers. RH10C. Manual called for the RH10 but, don't think it is still available. The "C" stands for copper core. Plugs hold up well in my 12, 14 & 16 hp Kohler engines. http://www.sparkplug-crossreference.com/convert/CHAMP_PN/RH10C Presently thinkin' of a roller for my gravel. :-)

Got my first 312-8 (the one in my Avatar) five years ago and could have just started using it, as all it needed was a good cleaning and fluids changed. But it was late in the year and I wanted to learn more about how these machines were put together and how to work on them (like a lot of folks here, I don't have the money to pay for many repairs). So I put it in my workshop and over the winter did a full frame-off rebuild [not restoration - I'm not that good!]. It's now my main mowing machine with a 37" SD deck. 312-8 #2 came three years ago from a member in Massachusetts. It was very rough but the price was right and #1 had taught me how easy it is to work on and rebuild these machines, so that was another winter's project. Members here and Joe's Outdoor Power got me all the parts, advice and guidance I needed. That now has a grader blade on it and ags all the way around. She's a real worker! 310-8 #1 came from a member in NY last fall, and I've since learned it has a lot of history with another member here. Although in very good shape when I got it, I still touched up/replaced a few things, mostly cosmetics. My wife has adopted this horse as her pride and joy, and she uses it as her personal ATV even though I do have a nice 42" deck for it if I can convince her that it was really meant to work for a living........ 310-8 #2 with 42" deck will be arriving later this month from the same NY member. This machine is a one-owner and aside from a few minor cosmetic issues is represented to be a really nice original machine. I'll respect that pedigree and not tinker with it unnecessarily. I expect I'll move the 37" SD deck from 312-8 #1 to this one and put one of the 42" decks on the 312. Still in the offing is the "mystery build". I've managed to acquire (including a complete 520 swept front axle and gear reduction steering set-up) everything but an engine and some 8" front rims to put it together. The final result is, as they say, still a "mystery"! Duff

Not all of the 633 had that style recoil. The earlier tractors had a Fairbanks Morse recoil similar to the recoil used on some clintons on the RJ35s, but again several of them broke and they were replaced just like the Tillson carbs were replaced with the Carter carbs.

you could buy it and keep it in stock I'm sure you will find a use for it someday Bob For those who do not know the older style camshaft ( two piece) retards the ingition timing for ease of starting The ACR style releaves some compression for ease of starting Both styles are for manual recoil starting not for electric start Both styles use flyweights attached to the back of the gear on the camshaft to operate The older two piece style retards the ignition spark to fire after top dead center this makes the motor easier to pull start once the engine fires the speed of rotation throws the flyweights out on the back of the cam gear and rotates the point cam lobe to advanced position or before top dead center the acr camshaft uses weights to hold a small tab on the valve cam lobe to keep the exhaust valve open a crack until just about top dead center of the piston stroke to remove most of the engines compression when the engine starts the speed of rotation throws the flyweights out and drops the small tab holding the exhaust valve up on compression stroke to give the engine it's full compression Brian

Great lookin' snow pair! I'm just getting ready but, don't think (or hope) I'll use the blowers, time will tell. 416-8 left w/ 48" blade, 414-8 w/ 42" blade on the right. Duh, I'm the only driver since my boys moved on. Decks are still on the Raider and "No Name" although they have both short chute blowers. What for? WHD (Wheel Horse Disease), I "needed" them (?). Just picked the 48" blade off CL last week, complete, $200. Chains aren't on, will put on "if" the forecast is "evil." Oh, decals by the Vinylguy! Excellent reproductions!

Maybe when I retire or by some miracle get some consistent spare time, I'll very much enjoy tearing into these engines and tranny's - as well as full-up restorations, but for now my favorite things are just operating the Wheelhorse tractors and some of the lesser maintenance/upgrades like tires, wheel weights and lately foot control kits.

Is it a "V" frame? That looks like a late 60's to mid 70's dozer blade. The frame has been extended but it was to the front so your lift point will remain the same. Wether it works or not on your 416 will be determined by what frame you have. The straight angle lever will not fit your tractor without modification. Someone may even trade you the correct one for your tractor. The frame may also have to be cut and put back where it belongs or add a bracket to the front that clips into your frt attach-a-matic. The extension will more than likely allow alot more push (sideways) to the dozer frame that, in turn, may cause a damaged dozer frame, a damaged plow mount, or worse. Think of it as adding a cheater bar on standard size ratchet. It gives you alot more leverage but there is a lot higher potential for breakage. This was my solution on a 520H. Blade raised Blade lowered
