My name is Russell. I've been reading the forums and am impressed with the knowledge here. I live in SW Missouri. I am attending college to use my GI bill before it's gone. I bought a c-125 auto last week and have been using the threads here to troubleshoot it's issues.

Today was a good day at the auction i won this wheel horse for $80 and it runs. First of I hate auctions because everybody comes and bids high on junk and they think getting a good deal.I only went because a good friend asked me to.The auction started out slow and it took 4 hours in the cold wet rain to come around to this Hidden Wheel Horse behind a bunch of other tractors. Of course the local scrapper guy was there moping up all the unwanted steel. He was bidding against me and i wasn't going to let him take this little guy get away from me!!! So i won and have to pick it up Sunday or Monday. I didn't even check what model it was i know i just wanted to get away from the scrapper guy! It seems like thats my thing lately saving Wheel horses from a scrapper/scrap yard lol. Thats the 4th Wheel horse in 2 months.

I had quite a "Wheel Horse weekend" this weekend. Remarkable considering we also fit in a bunch of fall family activities too. Sorry in advance for the long post, but I need to share with somebody that can appreciate it. Friday night after work I stopped off at the local Toro dealer. I actually needed a part for my Toro push mower, so had a good excuse. When I was in there last week for an axle seal on my 854, the owner, who also lives just down the street from me, briefly showed me a Suburban and a 753 that he had in their storage area. I talked to him a little more about them Friday evening and he said the Suburban was actually set out as scrap, and a guy picked it up and brought it in. They have done some work on it, and he said it now runs great. He said he wants to eventually put it on display in their showroom. The 753 looked decent, but was missing the engine and a few other parts. Before I left, he went to the back and brought out a copy of the Straight from the Horse's Mouth book for me to borrow. Being relatively new to the hobby, I had been wanting to read that book, so it was really nice of him to let me borrow it. Late Saturday afternoon I tried plowing with the 854 and had alot of fun. I finally got the new axle seals in, so I can keep the lube in the transmission. The engine still smokes quite a bit, but it doesn't lack for power. I had a little trouble getting the plow to stay in the ground, but I haven't had time to set it up at all, nor have I shined up the moldboard yet, so considering that I would say it was a success. As luck would have it, a 10" Brinly came up for sale nearby with the wheel horse hitch adapter on it, so I now have an 8" and a 10". There is a HUGE difference between the two. The 10" is alot heavier, almost too heavy to lift with the manual lift. Other than keeping it in the ground, I didn't have any trouble with the 8", but with a dull plow, turf tires, and no weight, the 10" got me to spin out. I had big plans to try to set up the plows Sunday afternoon and do some more, but a new WH find got in the way. A Commando 8 showed up on craigslist cheap. How early do you call someone on a Sunday morning that posts a listing at 2:30AM? I waited until 8:30, and was the first caller, and went to get it in the afternoon. I was thinking it would be worth a shot that the 8HP Kohler would be in better shape than the one on my 854, and it had bar tires on it, which I was wanting for the 854. When I got there, I was surprised to see this "original condition" tractor had a 7HP K161 Kohler in it. Still, I didn't turn him down. He said it ran great about a year ago, but it quit charging the battery and they got tired of having to manually charge it all the time, so they quit using it. Hopefully this week I can give the engine a quick once-over and hook up a good battery to give it a try. At this point, I'm not sure what fate awaits this Commando. I want the bar tires and a few other parts off of it for the 854. It would also be convenient for that K161 to find it's way into that 753 at my local Toro dealer, but I'll have to try to fire it up before I pursue that idea.

I give the over the top title to stevezx2. If there's no internal muffler that has got to be loud! Friends can hear mine a 1/4 mile away with the tsc muffler.

Years ago we replaced the knobs with tap handles from the local pub. Makes you work faster if you're shifting for Miller High Life! :woohoo:

I have 2 rubber strap wrenches from Sears that are great! the handle is plastic and they come on multiple sizes...works great on oil/tranny filters too!

That would be a 61 551, the heavy duty trans was only used in 61, not 60. It should have push pull throttle controls, and 5 1/2 " hp tecumseh with electric start. Looks like a pretty nice tractor ~Jake

I changed out the pulley on the transmission today. Went from a 4" down to a 3". Had to go 1" smaller on the belt too. It made a big improvement on the speed. I think I am going to pick up a 2.5" pulley tomorrow just to see how much more I can get out of it.

Well guys...STEELERS fan myself but have always liked the browns also. Looks like my team isnt doing so well either. :angry-banghead:

Same principle as Bob's, but I usually use an old piece of car innertube. My dad taught me long ago they make great multi-purpose rubber bands if you take it and cut it into various size rings. Of course.... kind of hard to find car innertubes these days I suppose. Rubber bands wrapped around or one of the wife's floppy jar opener thingys will give you something to grip also.

Use a leather strap wrench. If one is not available, wrap a leather belt around them and use a pipe wrench or large vise grip.

Joe, I've been sayin next year since 1964 when they last won a championship. Frankly, I'm sick of it. Weeden sucks and Shurmer is an idiot. I had high hopes when they hired Mike Holmgren as President. What a disappointment he's turned out to be. I'm seriously thinking about switching to the Bengals. They actually win a game now and then. :music-rockout:

I feel your pain brother. I think it is punishment for winning all those championships in the 50's before there was a Superbowl. Look at it this way as long as we keep loosing we will always have those #1 draft picks..... :eusa-doh:

Wife and I go Geo-cacheing and found him in the woods near Oswego N.Y. Along with him was a little toy boot with an I.D. tag. We were able to track the boot and it came all the way from Hawaii. I saw the little Dino in there and said "A little Stevasauras!" My wife said "WHAT?" As far as a Squonk goes, the songs' not complete with out this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b53URraoYFQ

A squonk is closely related to the elusive snipe that many guests from the city are asked help hunt for by the country folk. The same snipe kit can be used (permits are included) but to hunt a squonk the hunter must ride a wheel horse.

i personaly don't like stacks on my tractors. at my place there are too many trees to snap back into your face! that said i do have one with a stack. a charger v8, the stack was on it when i bought it at the 2004 big show. it's just 1in. galvenized pipe nipples & elbows with a tsc. flapper on it. the boy driving loves "his" tractor sounds great. but if i ever restore this horse about 5 years ago i bought a N.O.S. nelson muffler for it i think i paid $40 for it Jay

The Squonk was wandering around in the woods and found.....Another Squonk? A dino? What the hell is a Squonk anyways? While at the Wheel Horse show I asked the Squonk his self that very question and the answer was something like this? I believe it is his favorite song.

Think I would try turning that guide over, getting it close to the engine pulley. there isn't anything to guide out there when the pedal is pushed. Moving it closer to the pulley will push the belt out of the engine pulley when it is running with the tension removed.

Those little Briggsey mufflers make nice stacks on the little engine tractors. I've seen a lot of interesting creations using them. Nice and light too!

Sell it like it is -- you might be able to double your money selling it to someone confident of their mechanical skills and their ability as a parts "detective". Try to fix it - depends on your commitment to the tractor. If the "honeymoon" adrenaline rush has worn off and you decide you actually NEED the capabilities of the 520xi, can find financial means to invest another $500 + in refurb costs, and have the room to store the additional tractor, go for it. If you have not split a transaxle before, plan on a few weeks worth of parts hunting, diss-assembly, advise seeking and possible weekend raids on your wallet. If you decide the repair route, we can seek out a repair manual. There are several good topics on trans rebuilds on this site. Although not exact to your model, you will gain some insight on what is in store for you. One advantage working in your favor is the hydro unit will release from the axle housing and you will have a relatively simple mechanical array of gears, bearings and shafts to deal with. You will need to be able to remove the hydro and trans from the underside of the tractor. I don't foresee this being a repair possible with the trans still mounted in the tractor. Pull the hub before removing the trans unit from the tractor - this could be 5 minutes or 5 days depending on what appears to be luck of the draw. Remove the brake components. Remove the woodruff key from the axle shaft. Slide off the left side axle housing to reveal the true extent of the internal damage. I'm guessing you are in for at least an axle (scarred from inappropriate contact with the bearing or axle housing), axle bearing and axle seal, woodruff key and a few gasket bearings - $300 from various on line sources. Possibly a differential end cap if the spline surfaces are wallowed due to axle tilt. You will be able to determine internal diff damage (if any) when you remove the axle from the differential. And don't forget to add in the human capital spent - your time away from other activities. Farm it out - you are back at the same decision point the previous owner was - is it worth the money? Do I really need this tractor? What are my plans for this once I get it fixed? Forget the OO's and Ahh's from the crowd, do you really want to commit to the needs of a 520xi ? You just don't sound sure about this adventure. Get another trans - if you feel comfortable with the $$$ and the condition of the used trans - sure. You can probably make back a few bucks selling good spare parts from the defective transaxle. I firmly believe there are enough folks on this site who would be willing and able to provide all the support you need to finish off the repair. Ball's now in your court T. Wishing you good luck if you decide to rebuild.

Its prolly not much but it will be fun to restore. I got it with a deck and extra rear wheels and tires. She runs like a champ! Not bad for less than a $100
