My progress so far, I've got most of the tractor tore down and blasted, I'm cleaning up another set of tranny cases and will replace the originals as they are pretty rough. When I got this all I did was disassemble and clean the tranny so I'm going to replace the bearings, seals, gasket and any gears that need it. I had the wheels powder coated and got the tires remounted this morning, I think they turned out really nice. I see why some of you like to powder coat your wheels. I have two mufflers that fit this tractor so I had one plated with polished nickle. Now I have one for show and one for go. Hopefully within a couple of weeks I'll have this thing ready to paint.

Jim, that does work. When I read that it reminded me of when I was younger. I worked for a guy that raised butchering chickens ( 8000 of them). They were in stacked cages in these 2 barns that were 120' long with 2 rows of cages the length of the building. They were stacked 4 high and the droppings fell out from the bottom of each row to the outside onto the walkway. The foreman was named Juan and he came up with this (what I thought) great idea. They had a JD 400 with a snow plow on it. He put an extension on each side of the blade so it would reach under the rows of cages and he would blade the waste onto the walkway which was about 8' wide. He pulled a trailer that he made with hydraulic dump on it. And I would go along with a 7/24 snow blower with a chute extension (that he also made) and blow it into the trailer. There was also fallen feed and feathers but it worked great. We would turn on the exhaust fans because" YES" it was dusty but also for the tractor and snow blower exhaust. He rigged up the chute extension from an old Minneapolis Moline sileage blower, and you could adjust the end of it to change the pitch on the end. It would reach 4' and I could blow it right into the trailer. We could clean the 2 barns in about 2 hours and that included hauling the loads down to the pile and sweeping under the cage supports. So yes jachady, it does work. But, if you were going to move alot of dirt, you may want to put some sort of plastic liner in the chute for rocks and such. Thanks for bringing that up Jim, that is a great memory. Pat

just pulled the k181 from kents 875 apart and have a question on ring end gaps. this engine was an oil burner as anyone that seen kent riding around on it at charlotte last year would testify. i expected the bore to be really worn and there to be ring problems as well. the bore has absolutely no ridge and although glazed and has a few scuffs looks very nice. i dont have any real accurate measuring tools other than the digital calipers ive had for a while, they are ok, but not what i would call a 'professional' measurement tool.. they do measure fairly accurately with anything ive compared them to and are good enough to tell whether i have a std bore or oversize. one day if i do a real engine rebuild, i should purchase proper equipment..... i can say its still std bore. the piston thrust face is still above the minimum spec as well, it hardly looks worn at all. in fact the whole engine looks really nice inside..... im planning on purchasing a set of std rings and giving it a gentle hone much the same as i did on my k241 build that lives on the 1057 now. i couldnt be happier with the way that one turned out and i feel i have exactly the same bore condition with the 875 as i did with the k241. anyway, like the 241 the 181 has larger than max spec end gaps, the 241 had a large top ring gap and the 2nd and oil werent too bad. that one gave a puff of blue on throttling up but never while running. it didnt burn a noticable amount in the short time i used it before pulling it down.. back to the 181.... the ring gaps as found on this one tonight were..... top .032 middle .046 oil .062 + ( i didnt bother getting an exact on this one, a .030 and a .032 together were still loose) from my short memory and because im too lazy right now to go check the max used gap in the manual, i think the top ring was right at max. this engine wasnt a real fire breather, but it did hang on well when it was used as a mower and worker. so i dont think we have any bad compression loss issues ( more than normal for a tired engine, anyway) the middle and oil ring gaps are excessive and the biggest ive seen out of all the kohlers ive messed around with, which this one is the sixth i think. so to my question for all of you, or anyone that can be bothered to join in this thread here, is do you think the gaps (the oil one mainly) are a major contributor to this thing using oil? the last new ring set i did had gaps around .015- .017 when done for the top and middle and the oil was a three piece which made it sort of pointless to measure. i realize the top ring faces more heat than the others and i would expect that to be the largest or at least in the ball park with the rest of them, but it seems that maybe we had some mismatched rings from the factory in this one? am i on the right track here or totally off course?

Heres some pictures of the progress I've made after school today. The hood, fender, belt guard, and the piece directly in front of the dash are all blasted and about ready for primer. I am going to use some Bondo autobody filler to fill some pitting on the fender and belt guard tomorrow. The head of my blaster and my arms and clothes were such a lovely shade of red!

You did great for $80!!!! I'm going to pick up a CL find tomorrow for $100, it is a 312-8 with a blown engine. But the tins all look good and it has a solid 48" deck under it! I have a 875 that was my grandpa's that he bought new in 65. I restored it 1/12 years ago. here is a pic of it

There are major differences in synthetic oils. As a matter of fact many oils marketed as " fully Synthetic" in the USA do not meet ISO standards and are not allowed to be marketed in Europe as Synthetics. When I worked for a super charger manufacturer they filled all their units with Royal Purple from the factory. Testing had showed it the best at the time. In my race engines i use it exclusively and have seen a noticeable change in engine life, reliability and performance over cheaper oils. in 4 years of racing it I have had not a single oil related failure or issue!

We were surprised how well it worked. Next year we're thinking having a tractor pulling a wagon alongside and collecting all that good black dirt. Kind of like when they harvest corn.

I've heard blowers have been used down south in commercial chicken operations to move chicken waste with good results. But good heavans you would sure need a uniform and gas mask. Ever hear of this ?? Jim in TEXAS
