I was looking on CL lastnight and seen a ad for a 68 Wheel horse, I clicked on it but the pic was a 701, after sending the guy about 6 emails he finally called me today, I asked a few questions as the pic was small and not very good, well it sounded like it was complete, so we set up a time and I drove over to take look, it was only 25 miles away not a bad drive, I get there and find this 99% orig 701 that has not ran in 30 years parked in his shed the whole time he told me, he said when he parked it it was low on power, and planned to restore it someday, well after 30 years he said someday has came and gone, he looked to be in his mid 70's, I gave a little more than I normaly do but it was in good over all shape, I think between the 4 701's I have now I can put together a very nice machine, or two, this one has the orig. seat cover on it not in good shape but orig. and it has the linnen biege seat pan on it, my other ones have red seat pans, the deck on it is in sad shape but I don't care about the deck, the hood is probably the in the best shape of all the ones I have with 2 dent, and no major rust, in fact no pitting I could see. any way here is pics before I get yelled at for not posting some.

I can't help it-I still get a lump on my throat and a tear in my eye when the National Anthem is played before a ball game-then I heard this! It says what I feel about being born in this country-Al http://www.youtube.c...de=1&autoplay=1

Needs a battery and a key way for the drive pulley. Runs nice with a 8hp Magnum on it. Tires seem good and has tight steering. With all my outside stuff going on I thought it would be nice to have a smaller tractor that I could plow/level dirt with. Found this pretty nice 308-8 on CL about 15 miles from me. This is the platform for my hopeful 25 mph horse with a little pulley swapping.

I tried them on my 48" deck. I wasn't impressed at all. I put a set of regular blades back on. :twocents-02cents:

Just weld in whatever holes you are not using and have Terry make a custom decal for you. Sorry I don't have a closeup of the one he made for me but it can be labeled however you want.

A few years ago there were a couple of documented builds of grader blades by members here: http://www.wheelhors...age__hl__grader http://www.wheelhors...__fromsearch__1 http://www.wheelhors...__fromsearch__1 http://www.wheelhors...__fromsearch__1 http://www.wheelhors...__fromsearch__1

I honestly don't think there's money in restoring uless you get them for free and someone pays you to restore it. Even if you buy low and sell high, you're time is worth something. If you find a really nice condition original, probably wouldn't restore it. If you have a basket case, then redoing them, imo, is the way to go. Honestly not many people actually restore them to oem condition, they bring them back and make them their own. (As I have done). I happen to like lights on my 854, but it's not restored. I like wide tires on it also, but that's not oem. At that point, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I certaily could get my money back, but not my time. Most people do it for the act of doing it, and not for profit. Some people do such an awesome job in repainting, they look better then oem, but WH didn't come this way either. A huge amount of talent among the many RS members, but true restoration is far and few.

It looks like this thread has migrated to an original vs restore conversation. To answer your question, from my perspective, a early round hood is your best bet to get the bulk of your restoration dollars back. Various square hoods do hold value but..... basically any resto is a loss in some form. Now if you score the basisc tractor for a good price or even for free, then the return on investment is greater. Now for my opinion on original vs resto..... I would agree that a "nice" original is the way to go. But I find no enjoyment in a pitted bent up original just to say its "original". I have a couple originals which are boarderline. Next no one has taken in account for the level of resto. There are thousands of bondo repaints with new decals out there which on the surface look great but are still junk. Then there are those restos which have been done with care and vision to get it right. There is a world of differnce between the two.

The parking pawl (it really is a u-shaped loop) has been worn down by rubbing on the gear. When you shim it the unworn edge grabs the end of the gear tooth. It won't work that way for long. If you can push it with the valve closed a leaky valve is likely. The manuals also suggest the keys in the transmission counter shaft as a possible cause.(but since your seem to move on its own I doubt it.) Does teh tractor seem to have normal power...will it spin its wheels with you sitting on it pushing against something? Is it a hydrogear or a piston to piston? (Hydrogears have a figure 8 (or hour glass) shape on the end of the casting...piston to piston a single round shape.) Original should have been a hydrogear but many were replaced with piston. If it is a piston there are some more checks. (what does your 14 auto have as a hydro?
