As mentioned in another thread, Europe is Gaining a Suburban! LOL This little 551 is headed to Norway! Lars AKA Knusern and I have been talking for some time in the chat room. (And some of you thought it was useless! HAHA) I recently bought a "lot " of tractors on EBAY and this little Jeewl was in the mix. Lars has been wanting another tractor, but they are very expensive in Norway. So I told him he could have this Suburban if he could get it there. It is missing some pieces , but shows some promise. I have looked at a few Suburbans, the fenders are in great shape, rear tires seem ok Front end needs some attention. Not sure whats going on with that hood stand? Basically the plan is this...We are going to gather all the parts here in the states, Then I am going to take it apart, to fit into a shipping crate. Then off to Norway for Knus to restore it.

So....I started collecting the parts and pieces for the mystery build..... First, a frame from a 520...... Then an old seat pan from a 417..... Now some miscellaneous sheet metal...... And some more sheet metal..... And a hood from 314-8 that was NOS but damaged in shipping to the dealer, who took it off the tractor, replaced it with a new one and stored this one for Lord knows how long. I knocked out the dents, sanded out the scratches and repainted it, creating...... (Yes, I am using another tractor as a work bench!) And the seat pan from the 417, after MUCH sanding, filling and unbending a few things, became this....... There's a 520 forward swept axle, steering gear and front wheels waiting for me in Massachusetts, along with an 8-speed tranny, both from RS members here - thanks, guys! The power plant - THAT's the mystery........... More photos to follow as progress is made! Duff

Hello fellow Wheel Horse nut cases.... I worked a deal with C Series (Steve) today and ended up with a Raider 12 with no hood, no fender pan, no passenger side running board and the side cover off. It was part of a bigger deal we worked and I thought I was taking it home to use for parts.... Well the dang Kohler runs so sweeeeeeeeeeet I couldn't pull the motor. So several trips to my parts pile and I put together my second rat rod, I stripped off the 24 x 12.50 x 12 rear tires, the 16 x 7.50 x 8 front rims and the seat assembly off of the Craftsman DGT 6000 I picked up with the blown 27 Kohler and it all went on the Raider. Sparky was there turning wrenches with me and it was up and running in 2 hours.... these pics are off of my property this afternoon.

Thanks for reminding me - that was the other thing I was going to mention - email the numbers to Daryl and he (or his wife Anne believe it or not) will email you right back and tell you. The other thing - Daryl and Anne started a Bantam Tractors group on Facebook. It's a bit more active than the Yahoo group and another good place to make contacts!

In great shape? Great shape meaning all original and clean, paint in great condition and shines, everything works as it should, proper maintenance was performed. Mowing deck in like condition. In todays economy? Myself, I would pay $850 for something like that. Only because that should mean I had nothing more to do to it other than change the oil and filter, air and gas filter, and then start mowing. And if it looked more like a nearly new one, I would go a little more, but only because its a 14horsepower. I probably would not go higher for a 12horsepower version. I recently purchased a 417-A with 805 hours on it for $500. I probably spent $75 in gas going to get it. Then another $110 to perform all the fluid and filter changes, and a drive belt. Now I have at least $685 in it. Then I sold the 42inch deck (unfortunatly with a crack in it) for $75. OK, that takes me back to $610, but without a mowing deck. Fortunatly I had a 48inch deck here, that I will say I had $100 invested in, so now I'm back to $710. And thats without my labor!!! Well, thats how the money goes back and forth with these things. Sure, I get an extra good deal every once in a while, but hey, even a blind hog can root up an acorn under an Oak Tree every now and then. So I'm not lucky buying stuff like this for sure, just a little smarter than I used to be. Sorry to go on and on with my answer to your question. No more coffee for me tonight :auto-dirtbike:

Matt and Jason - sent you guys the files as requested! Matt, looks like you have most of everything that you need for the clutch. And as noted above, Daryl Shaffer repros a lot of stuff for this machine including (much to my suprise) .....the ENTIRE clutch assembly for your model - you lucky dog! He's a good guy. In fact he just bought my '48 Beaver tractor and it'll be going to Missouri in May. Its also great that you have the 9FB. When I looked at the pics quick before, I just saw the decal and looked no further - very amateur on my part One thing I learned with these motors as I've been working on my 23FB is that the FB stands for Flanged base, Ball bearing motor - kinda cool trivia. And lastly, the pictures are just awesome and priceless. Seeing those is reason enough to put everything else aside and restore it right. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. I've been doing lots of homework, research and info gathering for over a year now on these to ensure that my resto is 100% correct. I'm always willing to share.

Hi guys this is my first post. This is what got me interested in the old wheelhorse hobby. I stii dont really know what I have here. Its had an engine change and is missing the round hood and belt guard. I mainly bought it because it is sitting on four brand new tires. I am thinking it may be more of a parts tractor than one I want to get running. I want to get one to use a little I dont really care much what it looks like. In fact I kinda like that "old patina" thing. Ok so my question is what is it and is it worth fixing or is it better used as parts? Thanks for any help ya have to offer. Jack..

Matt, those pictures are awesome! If you want to know anything about Standard / Bantam tractors, your best bet is to get ahold of Daryel through this website. http://panzerbantam.homestead.com/index.html He's the guy that makes repro parts and stuff for Bantams. There's also a yahoo group, but the activity is very minimal. Has a lot of good info if you just read all the posts from the beginning. There's only about 1400 and you can skip a lot. I read it all when I got my Bantam. Answered many questions without me even needing to ask. I know there's at least three of us here (four now with you) that have Bantams. There are a few posts here about them if you want to search for them. I'm thinking that they only cast the "Standard" name in the grille on the first year or two, but it's been a long time since I researched it. Good luck on your restore. Please post the progress here. I'd love to follow along.

Well I took a few more pics of the tractor along with a few from when I was a kid. In reply to grnlark, I am missing the wheel hubs, they disintegrated with rust, so it will get aftermarket wheel as I don't have many options. I did take a few pics of the clutch component. In the old pics I am the rotten looking kid in the blue shirt, and the other kids are my sisters and they're friends. In one picture my dad is on the seat, in the other is my mom. She would be mad if she knew I was posting this pic, as you can see she is warning the person with the camera not to take her picture. Good Memories. Oh buy the way the numbers on the engine are 9FB 201537 91360 and the numbers on the tractor's plate are T 952378 Say grnlark do you know how to tell what year it is? Matt :flags-texas:

$6000-6500 That guy got robbed!! Thanks Craig for posting that video, it was great to see a little tractor like mine get restored. I wonder if Rick gave that poor guy a bottle of KY with that bill. Matt :flags-texas:

Hey Matt, The Standard was an early Bantam. That looks like a model 3000 or 4000. They are cool machines. This is my 8000 that I'm currently restoring. The motor you have pictured is not original. It would have had a Briggs 9FB (3hp). Do you have more parts? Looks like you're missing some tough-to-find stuff - specifically the entire clutch assembly and rear hubs. I'll see if I can find an original manual for the 3000. I might have it online. PM me your direct email address. If you should decide to part ways with it, I would appreciate being first in line. :handgestures-thumbup:

You are correct sir. Much more to these machines than what they were built to do. Most folks would think that little boys would be crazier about these than girls, but I have found the opposite to be true, at least in my home:

I did it all after I read these posts. Used surpluscenter to get the pulley. The info definately helped but I wasn't able to get the calculator thing to work right. Because I put a different motor in it & it not being in the origional place, I don't have a belt guard. (I know, dumb idea). I'm hoping this summer, after I add an extension to my shed, to cut down the existing beltguard and mod it to work with the new motor. but I'll need to figure a way to set things up to work with the origional 5" and the newer 7.75". I'm going to use the origional 5" in winter when I have the plow on it. Or, give it a year or two and I'll leave my 1057 regular and change things on my David Bradley. I'm always changing something on my "toys".

Some days I'd rather drive my WheelHorse than ride my Harley. Does anyone make an "Apehanger Handlebar Adapter" for a WheelHorse??? Van

Hello, Here is my 1968 Lawn Ranger. This tractor was the tractor I used to mow my parent's property like 20 years ago. But like any kid I abused it. Now it has an easy life going to the different tractor shows. It has a C-81 front axle to make it wider, a Kohler 8 hp pull start engine and an 8 speed trans. I also did not like the looks of the back of the tractor so I cut it off and put a toolbox from an older tractor on it. If you look at the seat you will see that I installed a shock and spring off of a mountain bike. Because I am a bigger guy and the seat would have scratched the paint. Thanks for reading my story, Jim
