My wife doesn't always "get" me, but she surely cuts me a lot of slack. When I bought my first Wheel Horse, a 312-8, two months ago she just shrugged it off as a whim. When I located a nice C-160 Automatic four weeks later she started to question why I needed another. She even went with me to pick it up (secretly I think she wanted to make sure I brought home only one more WH). After talking to some friends and family I have come to find out that several of them admit to having Wheel Horses garden tractors over the years. They spoke very highly of them but, curiously, always out of earshot of their spouses. I even found out one uncle of mine had rebuilt two of his own Kohler engines and rebuilt several more Kohler engines for his neighbors over the years. I am pretty sure the work was always done late at night, in his shed, and I suspect it was done by the light of muted kerosene lanterns with cheap cigar smoke hanging in the air. A buddy of mine expressed to me that he has a bit of tractor envy after seeing me bring home a second Wheel Horse in 60 days. After he mentioned this to me I thought I had a problem but, bless his heart, he straightened me right out. According to him: Owning one Wheel Horse means you are just a recreational user. Owning two Wheel Horses means you have an appreciation for fine machinery. Owning three Wheel Horses means you have an attraction. Four, it's turned into an obsession. Five, it's pretty much a full blown addiction. and six, well you really need to join Red Square and begin your next post with: Hello, my name is ________________, and I have a Wheel Horse problem. He's also convinced that Rustolem Regal Red should be reclassified as a gateway drug. Have a great day and hope the weather holds out...!

So last week we had nothing short of a disaster here with water and a mudslide from the stream coming down the mountain. The hero of the week was the Electro that worked tirelessly pushing mud and boulders around and clearing mud from the storm drains up to two feet thick. Even when the township machinery arrived it worked along their side pushing everything into piles that they could pick up. I was going to say that I want it to be buried with me when I pass but that would be selfish by denying someone else the privilege of owning this fine work horse. More details of the disaster to follow in non tractor forum later.

I enjoy the comfort of the heated cab on the 520H while blowing snow on a cold windy winter day.

So I picked up this trailer for $40 the Good is it does have a dump function it has sliding gates on the front and back it has a solid frame. And it also has 4 slots for 1x2 so I can put sides on it. The inside of the bed is 35"x52" And I think it looks pretty cool The bad needs new tires 5-12 size I will probably get 4-12 tri ribs (or should I get lugs again?) and the bottom of the bed needs work. And obviously lots and lots of wire brushing and paint and all that good stuff. Not sure what brand it is it has no tags or anything. These photos are after I powerwashed it as well.

Here what started years ago merely as a visual attraction to a cool looking old tractor resembling a miniature of a "real" tractor, has become a way of life. Just this last week with the mud slide and flood we had one once again proved to be an invaluable tool to help me out of a bad situation. Incredibly even the wife for the first time ever had kind words for a wheel horse, not to mention all the onlookers that simply gawked at it in amazement on what it could do.

So, it's been a few years since I've been on here, surfing or posting. Life has somewhat got in the way, but I'm hoping this coming fall / winter will allow me some time to work on my Bronco. I'm the one from a few years back with the 71 Bronco 14 that seemed to have changed hands here a few times, the one with the spider webs that was painted on the side of the hood. Anyways, long story short, I had put it aside due to some girlfriends, one of which has since become my wife. I now have a house of my own, with a garage and a shed, and an acre of flat yard. I've been mowing with a push mower, which is good excersize, but it does take a chunk out of my weekend, and is pretty useless for yard work. I recently came across Jay Bee on ebay (with the repro exhaust mufflers), and that got me thinking about the Bronco and bringing it back. As some of you know, the muffler on the Bronco now was... not right when I got it. So enough rambling, just thought I'd pop in, say hi.... again, and I look forward to spending some time on here and working on the Bronco

Well, I retired yesterday. My official date will be in a few weeks after I burn up some vacation leave. I have a several furniture and cabinet repair projects in my shop that Im working on with my sons. It great to spend ship time with them. But, I’m hopefully through with them after Labor Day weekend. I have a pile of Tres-Suburban’ parts calling. Our large area tractor show is in Temple, Tx October 6th and I hope to have uno-tres done by them. Lots of retirement plans.....but a mid afternoon nap is calling! Im already working on plans to be at the Big Show next year!

I've been up to 8, but back down to 4 at the moment.....space is the real issue...so I go into the garage, open a quart of 90wt oil, open a pint of Rust-O-Lium Regal Red, and give a good healthy spray of Val-Spar Linen Beige and sit back with a Rock & Rye. Heaven!!! With my back...the 857 is the Horse of choice to sit on. Some good music is also soothing.

I have 16 running, driving, usable Wheel Horse tractors. Why? I don't know!!!!
  15. 4 points
Why did your list end at six? ? ? Lots of us have significantly more that that, heck I've got six 953s and several others too!

Gotta say that is one awesome looking little trailer! I always like the ones that are a little different. It would look great behind a horse. If it were me, I'd keep the lugs on it, kinda gives it a tough almost military look.

The Wheel Horse part number for your drive belt is 7473 which is a 5L-820 belt. I have had good results using the Kevlar belts from Tractor Supply.

I'm not sure if this is local or not but I stopped by Ace to pick up implement red in the tall cans and they were two for seven dollars! They said the sale goes till the end of the month. That would be in the rustoleum colors.

I am just wondering if you guys have days like this?I decided that I needed to mow the grass around the missus's garden. Before mounting the deck to the 416-8 I decided to freshen up the blades. No way, they were to far gone so I get another set and sharpen them.Grease the spindles, and mount the deck.Open the gate and start to mow.Get to close to the blueberry bushes and snag the bird netting locking up the middle spindle.Run the tractor back to the shop ,drop the deck and spend time cutting away the mess.Remount the deck and head to the garden.Cut the grass and then head to where I have been cutting wood to clean up there, hang the deck and the stick the tractor.Walk 600 feet up hill and get another WH to get the 416 free.Unstick the 416 and run the 520 back up to the house.Get on the 416 to get it back to base and noticed it wants to turn right. On the trip back to the house notice that the right front is flat.Demount the flat and see that the valve stem is missing and the tire is full of fix a flat.Clean the rim and grab a new valve.Mount a used tire and finish the day mowing around the wood shed.I'm tired and feel that nothing got done.

As far as how many, I am up to 13 running complete ones and probably enough parts to assemble four more. It's just not easy to store them any more.

Dang, something is wrong i just counted mine and i only have 9. That's bad it is not an even number. On the other hand if it was i would need another one to make 11. The fellow down the road didn't want to sell his to me. What is the matter with people like that. Marv

@Mows4three Great stuff you posted! A few weeks ago I was looking over a Wheel Horse maintenance (computer) file I have. I counted 15 garden tractors that I had recorded. I thought there is no way I have 15 WH GT's. I checked the files again and 15 looked correct. I went to the pole barn and "shed in a box" and only counted 13! Ha I thought...then I remembered 1 at my step daughters and 1 at my brothers house....Yep, 15 is correct!

Hello! A newbie here again with questions for you seasoned collectors and wrench slingers. I found a C160 Automatic for sale last week and struck a deal to buy it. The guy who had it was selling it for a relative who's husband had passed away so he didn't have much information on this tractor. He had no manuals, receipts, brochures or service records, all things I usually ask for when buying equipment. He did have it running and we were able to take it for a few circuits around the driveway to check out the mechanicals. With the exception of the seat, the wrong air filter cover, the wrong bolts in the engine fan screen, and a front wheel that was replaced, it looks pretty close to original to my untrained eye. Trouble is, I can't find any serial number on the tractor, anywhere. I've looked in the usual places: under the seat, on and under the tilting seat pan, on the left and the right side of the steering column tower, and frame. I've looked ove the whole tractor a few times and I'm stumped. One of the members here on Red Square advised that if it has the original hood, it's probably a 1974 or 1975 C160. I'm going with that until I learn more. Any suggestions on where to look for the serial number plate on this mystery machine and and if I should be looking for a paper/vinyl sticker, an adhesive metal tag or a riveted serial number tag? As usual, your help, suggestions and comments would certainly be appreciated.

Mowing grass, only because I have Brand X tractors for snow removal. Also, when feeling depressed,I like to just look at my Horses.Makes me feel much better.

Pretty much any blade designed for a long frame will work fine. The axle bracket will be like the one pictured. One catch is the angle adjust arm. There have been some variations over the years to enable it to clear the foot rest, pto, etc. If you gat the wrong one it's usually an easy fix. The one pictured is the one that works on your 76.

Probably my favorite, because I get the most seat time out of it, is snow removal. I don't mind the cold weather, and I'm always amazed at just what these tractors can do.

Love my Horses. Mowing, plowing, pushin' snow, more. My favorite chore, grooming, maintaining the Stallions. For instance, polished the baby moons and power washed the Horses a bit (dirty frames no more). Hey, at Camp Lejeune I polished my brass belt buckle, boots, M14, every day. Didn't mind a bit! My family loves Horses too!

953: You are absolutely correct. Just got home and had a chance to see your post. Wiped off the area above the hydraulic control and took this photo of not one, but TWO rivet holes in the side of the steering column tower. Just where you'd expect to see them spaced. Mystery solved. But, sadly no serial number will ever be captured for this gem. Thanks guys! Dave

Right behind the PTO you can see the heat house that collects all the heat from the rear cylinder and pumps it into the cab. It keeps the cab 30 F higher than outside temp.

I like plowing snow too but, no heated cabs up here in Michigan... Something about Wolverines being tougher than Nittany Lions perhaps??? We also multi-task up here - Plow and Tow at the same time...

Last I got from him he has gave up on wheelhorses and said he was selling them all. Then he quit talking to me altogether and said don’t bother him. Don’t know why. Wish him the best though. Wish I had the cash and space.

Your deck has an arm with a slot in it. On your tractor thee is an arm with a pin sticking out at the front, Lower the lift mechanism and you will see the arm with the pin sticking out to the side. As you slide the mower deck under the tractor you will need to raise the slotted arm up to allow the pin to enter the slot. Think of it as allowing the deck and the tractor to consummate their relationship! Following this you will need to attach the front cross bar of the deck to the atach-a matic.

I don't think it was commercially made, looks like a very handy home built trailer. Too much craftsmanship for a mass produced unit.

I agree with Dells, that is one tuff looking trailer just the way it is, I wouldn't mind if I was using it on wheel horse at all!

I personally like plowing snow and using the mid mount blade as well. But I think the most enjoyable for me is seeing my kids drive them and the enjoyment they get.

The last time I drove a Wheel Horse I was about 10 or 11 and it belonged to my grandfather. My excitement to finish my project is based in those memories. I’m 41 now and I decided it’s time for a WH!! I loved any excuse to drive that Red machine! Seems like I’ve not gotten over that! Mounted the K321 on my WH700 tonight. I can’t wait!

I also catch all oil and put it back in oil bottles to be recycled. The greasy paper towels go into my burn barrel, not the perfect answer but better than land fill where it can leach out I believe. What gets pressure washed off makes it to the ground but that is minimal as i scrape and wipe down what I can first. My water comes from a well so I sure don't want that contaminated.
