Awhile back my WH buddy (groundhog) calls and sez would I like to have a Massey Ferguson 1650 GT -- so I sez---- huh? I didnt even know Massey made a small tractor! So I go and look at it and it was rough, been sitting out for years! (you know, like a lot of our horses come to us!) BUT!! a 2000rpm 42" tiller was in the deal and it looked better than the tractor so that clinched the deal at $150. The MF 1650 is fairly close in size the the WH D's, though somewhat more 'beefier' --- Kohler K341, Eaton hydro with hi & lo range, 3 point hitch, and a 48" deck (that turned out to be beyond repair) So I haul him home - mostly to get the tiller! But I get to tinkering with it and find its not as bad as I thought, virtually undisturbed as far as jake leg mechanics. Engine first getting fuel to it and it started right up and ran GOOD, so scrounged up tires to ck the hydro/gears/steering, etc -- well, again everything worked beautifully. By this time I am getting pretty impressed with thing and started doing a good thorough clean up. Has Ross steering (just like the WH) and it needed rebuilt and all linkage freed up -- and toe-in set!, had horrible toe-out which made steering a bear. I scrounged up another deck and got it rebuilt, and all the tiller needed was the 2 oil seal on the gear box and it worked great. Anyhow after bout 3 months with lots of elbow grease, the dern thing is SWEET! Ive really taken a liking to it. Course as we already know, the Kohler K341 is a hoss and this one was/is in excellent condition, as is all the running gear. Have since found out MF had a 1655 and a 1855 with Onans that is even more 'beefier' than this 1650 - Ive been kinda looking for one of them.....

It’s been a slow process but I finally have all the parts and pieces welded, painted, and cured. This weekend I hope to assemble everything including the pump and begin figuring out all of my hydraulic connections. Once I get everything put back together and pinned on the tractor I’ll post a few more pics.

just replaced the fuel pump on the k 301, it was old and starting to leak, debated rebuilding or replacing, went with the newer plastic type from eBay. after a simple swap , and a quick start up, the first thing I noticed was the solid /smooth idle, apparently the pump was loosing its push and giving me that erratic idle. the fuel adjustments are also immediate , so a quick swap solved two problems , glad I did it . pete

Well we have spark and she turns over. Throwing some fuel to her tomorrow. Hope for the best.

Would look nice parked next to a 857! Yes he is and doing a damned fine job of it and yes they are Jeff ... They are just a few blocks down the street from Tom's place and I stopped in ther once when visiting. Nice folks and had some nice gently used 520's but definitely dealers prices. Even the rusted stuff outside was a little high.

Great tip Garry @gwest_ca! If using a battery I would caution you that a dead short like that could cause the battery to explode so it is best to cover it with an old wool coat and weight down a plastic container over that. Eye, face and hand protection should also be used.

I would not use WD-40 as a flush, the diesal fuel will do the same job for a lot less money. Hypoid gear oil is made for posi traction rear ends which produce more heat than most. It won't harm a transaxle, but it is overkill. Regular gear oil is fine and cost less.

Well a little more done. Finally moved her inside so I could work out of the rain. Got my new tail lights mounted, ignition switch in and wiring figured out. All temporarily wired up to get it working correctly. When it is right I will make a complete wiring harness. Fuel tank in, solenoid in. Next up is to run the fuel line, filter, and get the right length belt...... baby steps before leaps and bounds 👍

Almost forgot to thank our host. Property, buildings and displays he has are awesome and you cannot have a better setting for an event like this. Weather was a bit cool and damp in the AM but turned beautiful in the PM.

Thanks for your help. I sprayed PB B'laster, left soak over night and was able to get the valve out today. I'd say the valve was hardly, if ever used since 1969;-( OBTW Dave L, I bought a Sundstrand 90-2046 Hydro from you about 10 -12 years ago and it is still going strong, I put it on my 1968 Electro, plowed a lot of snow with it, plowed, disc, and cultivated my garden. That is a great WH!!!!!

Beautiful job so far. I just partially (not painted is it) finished my loader build on a different forum. If you haven't bought the hydraulics yet fit everything to a common adapter. I choose male jics with female jic hoses. This way if a hose goes bad you can have one long spare you can replace any where temporarily. Jics (Flares) are nice because they don't need pipe dope nor do they have O-Rings to replace.

I started messing with it tonight, even found an old can Johnson paste wax I tucked away. I am loving the look, something completely different than what I used to doing. one reason I picked this way was that all the original stickers are in place, does anyone know what sticker was under the shift pattern. I have 4 day weekend hope to make some progress on it.

Need to throw out those blue oval FORD logos and celebrate the heritage it has!

How did the tractor perform prior to replacing the belt? Did you pay close attention to the routing of the old belt and install the new belt the same way. There is a runner at the bottom end of the belt travel that the slack belt will rest on, if your belt is under it that would explain it. Take a look.

It is very funny, I don't usually have sellers remorse when I sell a tractor or other but when I sold that one I did. Good to have it back even though it needs a lot. My son who is now 11 told me he feels he is ready to restore a tractor on his own. So .... I figured what could be a better one to restore then this one? Here his is at about age 2?

I take tractors to about 8 shows per year. How I set up depends on the rules at the show. Some shows will allow you to have your trailer or camper by your display, others don't want any trailers in the display area. Most shows in our area will have card board signs that you can fill out with your information. I took the time to make some out of wood that resemble the grills of each tractor, then I burned my info into the wood. Here is a pic from one show last year.

The plowing.... Not a lot of ground to turn but made the best of it. He had two plots one small but large enough to plow garden and one rather narrow but quite long. I'm gonna try the vid without you tube so let me know if it views. After the plowing guys with tillers had at it and darn near ready to plant. Tom brought a 12 incher for Dan to try and no problems but very hastily set up. If you snoozed on the plow field you weren't gonna get a crack at it there were that many guys there with plows. I’ll get it figured out. As far as tires, I have ags on the tractor I mow with and they dig up my yard in the back pretty bad. Swapping my deck over to the 417 soon anyways and it has turf tires. I have a very sandy soil lot. Good for water drainage, bad for growing grass.

Little more fit, finish and figuring things out in between rain storms. Wanted to get the front on. Lost my battery tray somewhere in the shed, lol. I dont have the correct hole in the block for the belt guard so I have to get something there worked out. No big deal. I have plenty of duct tape. As she sits today......

Well she’s a little farther along today. Waiting on some muscle to help me set the engine in it.

Built one once with thoughts of parking it in the living room for a easy chair. First thing off left a water mark on the hood from a adult beverage. Then let the grandkids climb on it. Said to heck with it and hooked up a plow and stuck it in the dirt.Heck we all know a guy who built a trailer queen once for the sole purpose of sticking it in the dirt! Soldier on Ritchie and don't sweat the scratches & boogered up fasteners..... adds character. You can always name the paint runs and point out your favorites. I covered up a few of mine with Lowell's magnetic business cards!

Exactly why there are no trailer queens here. Too much babysitting and tip-toeing around it not to scratch the paint. Plus I suck at painting because of having no patience to sit and watch the paint dry. I'm still in the denial stage where everything seems possible and could probably use a big slap from reality. But dream'n is part of the fun too I guess. So many ideas, so little time = so many partially started projects.

Ritchie, I’m likely in the same boat with my 22-8 project. I took a week off and never was able to work on it. Too many high priority tasks in front of it. And the weeks are blurring by. So I’ve just decided I’ll bring it in whatever shape it’s in when the time to load it up comes along.

I’ve come to a point where my ideas, abilities, resources and working environment have met up with reality. So after a couple painted parts got bumped, fell over and got scratched, I said the heck with it. Back together she goes. I have Chip Foose dreams and a bum’s budget. So she will have patina, primer and paint. It will be put back together, hopefully running and moving without incident. This will be her shakedown run and I will hopefully have time to fix anything that comes up. That’s where I’m at today. Carry on
