Did some maintenance and Changed the Oil and filter this afternoon on the new to me 522XI HYDRO. I was shocked that the PO would allow this Horse to have such CRAP to be installed on his Horse. Well it has a WH filter now and 6 Qts of AMSOIL will drive and Top off in the morning to 7Qts.

Time to get serious with the frame and steering, having made the belt idler carrier I thought l could squeeze the steering fan gear between it and the transmission. This is tight because I have to make something for motion control to slot in there as well, as I said though if I want to keep the wheelbase down it's the only way. Decision made, I could work backwards down the frame with the final position of the steering console and seat, I had to have a home for the fuel tank and battery, so figured under the seat made most sense. Leaving a bit of wriggle room we arrive at the engine. Measurements done I worked out I would need to add 440mm to the length of the frame. With the new frame parts cut to length, it all got clamped down to a steel and welded up. (I know I took this picture as l did this but when I look at it now it doesn't make sense) ?? Anywho, moving on.... The frames length to the steering axle showing fan gear mount. Speaking of the fan gear I suspect you've worked out how this now operates..... with the fan gear cut off from its original shaft and mounted on a new 'slightly' longer one, the drive now goes ' out the back' effectively reversing the steering. With the new longer frame, it's a case of measuring and cutting the new longer steering rod to fit, and at the same time welding the tie rod linking piece in its correct position. ( having already cut it from the original rod) The steering link leaning against the vice is from my commando 8 (which is still awaiting restoration) it illustrates the difference in length. Enough from me... I'll be back tomorrow.

I would suspect that since neither JD or Toro make their own filters that the one in picture and the WH filter you put on came from the same place.

You need a 6 point socket to keep from rounding off the nuts. They get worn from all the grass, sand, dirt, and gravel the hit. I have had 12 point sockets round of the nuts.

I have been fortunate enough to have been on quite a few boats.. I'm from a Navy family having my Dad and a few brothers who served. Looking back it was a big mistake having not done so myself and I regret having not enlisted myself. I was able to go out on the destroyer USS King for family day while my brother served. What an awesome day. we steamed out for a few hrs. where we dropped anchor and had a family picnic of burgers and dogs with all the fixins prepared by the enlisted men on deck on big barbecues. We were able to wander around the boat all day and were able to go just about anywhere. I spent a lot of the day up on the bridge where I found the captain to be one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet and I was allowed to even sit in his chair! What an honor for a 14 yr. old kid at the time.. I also spent a good bit of time in the radar room. My brother Mike was actually the head in charge of the radar room. It was just a few yrs. later I got to repeat this entire experience of family day aboard my brother Dave's boat, the USS Eisenhower, (the Mighty Ike) an air craft carrier. Another great day at sea for me. Being able to watch the F-14's (if memory is correct) take off and land from such a close vantage point was something I'll never forget. Again, we were able to wander the boat all day long and go just about anywhere we wanted to go, and I certainly did. I've been on quite a few battleships, When I was a kid I also went on and toured the German sub, the U-505 which we captured at sea during WW2 and the submarine USS Nautilus in Groton CT.

Hello folks! We only have a half acre of grass, but I was tired of sweating in the SC sun using a tiny 21" push mower. I looked at brand new riding mowers, but just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money for a flimsy looking machine. So I started searching for well made vintage machines and discovered Wheel Horse. I found this 312-8 on craigslist and dragged it home for $360. Somebody tried to touch it up with red spray paint (ugh) but it runs and mows. Here's what I know so far: it's a 312-8 with a 42" SD deck and a Kohler Magnum 12. Sadly a serial number is nowhere to be found (maybe painted over?). The engine numbers are also faded to oblivion. The deck is a 05-42MS05. Can anyone help identify the model year? I'm guessing 1987+ because it has the M12. More photos here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5dezknlauktq4ti/AADS3wug2ixnNy0nIiiHaIsEa?dl=0 I'm planning to change fluids, new tires & tubes, and new blades. Where is the best place to buy parts online? I figure my local dealer(s) will be more expensive for parts. Thanks! Daniel in Greenville, SC

You know those holes I liked? Yep these ones... Well I found a good use for them.. A bit of trimming and welding was needed along with this small plate to fill up a hole. And this is what I have made with the holes.. It fit's on the end of the bench to give it some strength and some style.. OK, I could of come up with a simpler design, but I just couldn't help myself Something was needed to cover the cogs that powers the er.. Auto feed is as good a name as any.. Anyway, a couple of strips of steel welded together and bent in a funky shape. Dig out a bit of computer case.. Chop and weld to shape.. I need to finish the welding and give the edge a little grind down, but I'm happy with the strange shape and look A finishing shot for the day

Wheel Horse made a special wrench for those 11/8" nuts: I always use them, I have two, one for use behind the blade on the nut there to hold the spindle securely, and the other wrench on the outside bottom nut, they are 18" long for lots of leverage, and thin enough head to fit behind the blade. There are two different sellers with these wrenches available on eBay right now: Always use a thick grease on the threads so the nuts don't freeze up too tight during use ("grass juice" is like a corrosive glue). As the blade spins, it snugs up the nut tighter. These wrenches were given away free in the 80's with each tractor purchased. (A 6-point closed-end wrench on the outside would be a lot safer and more secure, with a long handle -- or just purchase a 11/8" socket if you have a 1/2" drive set).

Randy, That is one cool wagon. I don't think I've seen one up close and personal. It's sad, really, when you think about the toys and stuff we had in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, compared to what kids have today. Toys, wagons, etc., were made out of steel, made to last. Today, it's all plastic. When I was growing up, we played with Tonka trucks, Nylint trucks, BuddyL trucks, had steel wagons to pull around, etc. Now, it's all plastic, or video games instead of actually going outside and getting dirty.

As Dennis's rear end needs questions answered , it will be part of tonight's 'instalment', first however,.... Hello Mark, how's it going up in the frozen north?, way to make me not feel guilty,...thanks. Maybe I'll change my username to Dark horse. And ohiofarmer, your experiences are all to common, doesn't matter where you live, I think they call it 'progress'. Right now though iiittttsssss loader time, with the help of the cat, (I love my cat) I swopped the subframe for the tractor on the bench and then promptly stripped it down to axles, frame and engine, having already done a bit of measuring. I split the frame from the transmission, blocked it up then wrestled the subframe back into place, first seat mock up But with nothing to go from, steering wheel wise. And the engine was a pita so I got rid of that. l placed the whole steering unit in place. And of course because it's a it slotted right in. So, bearing in mind I wanted to keep the wheel base as short as possible the first thing to work out was the position of the fan gear for the steering. This means lengthening the steering wheel shaft so I wasn't banging my hands against the loader towers. Adding a seat on the beer crate made it more... comfortable. A picture from the other side, and I felt I was on the right track. The bit of measuring I did earlier, (before tearing the tractor to pieces) involved the placement of the transmission belt idler. I would have to replicate this...so I did. It is removable, you just have to separate the tractor frame from the subframe to get clearance. Tomorrow we'll touch on steering and tractor frame.

I'm an Army guy, having served as a 12B, Combat Engineer. So, I'm a little out of my league when it comes to discussing Navy vessels. But, due to my job, I spent some time on Navy bases, and on a few Navy vessels, mostly Frigates. But, as I said, I was on the USS Missouri, and did go down into an aircraft carrier in San Diego to do some work on Harpoon missile related stuff. And I was on one, or in one submarine, boy was that a tight fit. Having said all that, I was impressed with the vessels I was on, and was impressed with how contain they were, as in, how life related stuff was contained when onboard and deployed on sea. I don't think that kind of military life would be for me, but I can understand the lure it may have on others. I do believe it's a good thing to spend some time in any branch of the military, it gives one some perspective to things other than themselves. This is a very cool thread.!!!!!

I was looking through some old pics and thought I would share a picture of the Radio Flyer I redid for my grandson. I bought this for his Dad when he was little from a garage sale. Paid $10 I think. Its a Radio Flyer 2000 from the early 70's. They didn't make too many and you can't find many pictures on line. This was my grandsons first birthday. He will be two in May. Here is a picture of his Dad in the same wagon. Randy

Or go to Harbor freight by a cheap 1-1/8 wrench and grind it thinner in the head to fit the hex above the blade or if you are really cheap like me old mower blade angle grinder and a file. to hold the upper hex use a real wrench on the nut.

I agree with Bob, that does sound like a starter problem. It is very easy to test the starter. Install a jumper cable from the + battery post directly to the + post on the starter. If the starter spins the engine, then the starter is OK, and the problem is in the solenoid, wiring, or ignition switch.

Make sure it is a quality wrench or socket, a Chinese one can sometimes not be the perfect size and that will cause it to round the nut.

Thanks Jeff, at this point I don't know how I will Do the Lines but the more I think of it the more I am considering making the Loader removable. I just spent the past couple days servicing the Tractor as I was waiting on estimates on Metal to be cut. I did receive costs from one place on the 32 Pieces on the Cad drawing you provided. They came in at $150.00. I then sent them a Updated drawing on my Bucket and am making it 41" wide so it will fit through my stable doors. I added some degrees of tilt to the back of the bucket And also on the brackets I will make a hole or two On the bottom for further adjustment. I am waiting on them for the bucket costs and prices from another company.

I use Sea Foam in all my machines.I have a 1968 Cub Loboy that would run for ten minutes and quit.I let it sit for ten minutes and it would restart and run for ten minutes and quit.I checked everything in the fuel system and found nothing wrong.Good flow to the carb.Several versions of the carb so I was reluctant to pull it apart.Dumped some Sea Foam in the tank and it brought the old girl back to life. That was two years ago.Still going strong. I am a believer and recommend it to anyone.I use it and I know it isn't cheap but if it keeps the machines running I'm willing to buy it.I also use Stabil and run Ethanol free gas in all my air cooled engines. That includes the two strokes.I think that the days of going to the filling station and getting gas without further treantment are gone.JMHO JAinVA

@Jake Kuhn sells all of the bearings, bronze, seals and gaskets as a kit. He is in Michigan, and I am sure he would ship the whole kit over to you. It looks like most of your gears are OK. If anything, I would try to find a better input shaft gear and a different 1st/rev fork gear. The whole thing should clean up real good.

Jack up one rear axle at a time so all the oil runs to the other side. Change seals on the high side, then reverse for the other side.
