15 pointsSo, I've had my '69 Work Horse for about 2 years now. It has honestly probably been the shining star of my herd. Previous owner put a Chinese Honda clone on it. It always starts, drives, is super solid, and even my dad flipped it over a bank (don't worry, he's okay) and all I had to do was replace the lift arm, and I love the patina on it, but it always had one sore spot. The hood, more specifically, the headlight area. The HF motor that was planted into it, the exhaust pointed straight forward, out the front of the hood, and the previous owner melted the original headlight bezel(Which I have), he took it out, and left the hood empty. It took me two years, but I had a brilliant idea. Why don't I just flip the muffler 90 degrees, so I gave it a try. The two manifold bolts came off easy, muffler is obviously supposed to be mounted the other way if you look at the gasket and the connection areas, but it looked like it would fit, so I went ahead, and what do you know, no exhaust leaks, doesn't touch the hood (super close, but doesn't). It does blow the exhaust at your leg now, but if you're driving, you don't even notice it. After this, I went to the pile of extra parts that the previous owner provided with the tractor and pulled out the original headlight delete bezel, It had never been on the tractor before. I cannot believe how much it pulls the look of the tractor together. I LOVE it. Just remember, somethings may take time to shine through, and when they do, it is totally worth the wait.

12 pointsHello All, Got a call from somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody that knows im into Wheel Horses. Lol! Got told that there 20 year old 314H needs a starter and they where quoted $500 Long story short... got it for dirt money cause "its shot" ... looks like starter drive and solenoid are both shot. I jammed a screw driver behind the starter drive and already had it running. Needs a full service but all of this is easy... Unit has 1007 hrs Tony

7 pointsI thought I would do a quick, but thorough, right up on my recent engine swap on my 520-H. The Onan has served me well for the past three year with the exception of the manifold leaking and having to run it at half choke to smooth out the idle. Currently this machine is used for my snowblower in the winter and loader in the summer. Knowing that the Onan had life left, but not wanting to risk catastrophic failure on a necessary piece of equipment I decided to look for a replacement. With shear luck I found a brand new 2001 Kohler 25hp on Craigslist for $450 and wasted no time getting it. The Onan will have a new home on a second 520 I was given in desperate need of attention, making it a good candidate for a restomod tower/ hood swap donated from a black hood model. The swap isn't to terrible but more time consuming than I had originally thought. The worst of which was a wiring gremlin that I created running a wire to an accessory power source instead of a full time one. The engine is wider than an Onan making placement a challenge. An inch froward of where the engine is currently bolted you can see two holes. The one to the left side of the tractor is a factory whole that I used for the first round placement of the motor. This left the engine to far forward for the clutch engagement to work properly, but was a good medium for the belt alignment. After moving the wholes back a little over an inch everything worked out great, with exception of the belt guard which I have spaced out with washers for the time being. Next came the wiring. With the diagrams I was able to find I discovered that the Kohler came with a similar setup to the Onan. This includes the oil pressure switch, starter solenoid, a place for the tach. wire. The Kohler has a fuel shut off solenoid that needs constant 12v while the engine is running and is tied into the starter solenoid. On the back of the engine plug there is a post with a red and a blue wire, the red one I connected to the yellow ( coil 12v ) wire and the blue one to the light blue ( starter solenoid ) wire. The fuel shut off is currently my only engine kill as the 520 key switch does not have a post that provides grounding in the off position. Here is the Basic layout: Tractor Kohler CH25S Oil Pressure - Dark Blue Oil Pressure - Green Starter Solenoid - Light Blue Starter Solenoid - Blue Tachometer - Gray Rectifier - AC Post Coil Positive - Yellow Carburator Solenoid - Red - formally connectedt to blue Battery + - Red Battery + - Heavy Red Ground - Black Ground - Black Cylinder Temperature - White Temperature Sensor Kill Switch - White The cylinder temperature probe needs a whole with 1/4 - 20 threads but the Kohler uses fine thread 1/4 so I had to tap one of the throttle bracket bolt wholes for it. this was the best location for a good reading while keeping it away from the exhaust port. The throttle cables worked good, just had to shorten the choke a bit. The oil drain from the Onan was the perfect fit for the Kohler also. As for the pto I needed to bend the top bracket to allow the muffler to line up properly. Last to be modded was the hood. Luckily the hood just clears the filter cover, but I had to notch for the muffler. If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

6 pointsSome of you may know I was lucky enough to inherit my shop/garage from my late uncle who was a car guy. He had four 30 X 42 windows that let in a nice amount of light. Unfortunately, when his daughters sold his adjacent home it was to a landlord who is currently renting to alleged drug dealers. They haven't given me any trouble in the 18 months I've owned the garage but I don't trust them. To keep the windows but increase security I made internal shutters out of 3/4" plywood and barrel locks. The side of the plywood that faces the windows I painted a dark color so it just looks like a dark interior of a building when closed. When open it gives me full function of the windows. Exterior View Inside view closed Inside view with one side open It gives me extra piece of mind while I'm gone since I live a few miles away.

5 pointsHi Redsquare, not been around for a while...happy new year, and I hope your all doing well. I am in a quandary, l was lucky enough to buy another set of rear weights for my mowing horse. As you can see they need some paint, so..... Do I go with the red (which I really like) but which will not match the front rims, or maybe try silver.....just to shake things up. I know, I've not got enough on, but thought I'd throw it out there for members opinions. Thanks.

3 pointsHello All - I've owned a few Wheel Horse Tractors over the years but haven't owned one in a while. I recently purchased a Work Horse 700 Model to plow my driveway and the love affair started all over again. I haven't restored one yet and I'm leaning towards buying another one to restore. Glad to be on the forum. Take care! WES

3 pointsAlso the transmission drive must be engaged as this releases the parking brake.
-
3 pointsIf it has been converted the tow valve would be in different location. it is #108 in the picture and would be a flat blade screw driver project/ Screwed it to drive back out a turn to push
-
3 pointsMy three different models of Sundstrands have the Tow release on the left side. The one on top shown in Pauls picture, the one in the front left that is a screw driver slot, and the one on the rear that is a hex head bolt..7/16 I think.
-
3 pointsSorry for not checking in sooner. Phone has been out in the truck charging. Still no power at our house but other side of town just got power so hopefully not too much longer. It's gonna be a long clean up process but our little town always pulls together through things like this. Couldn't ask for a better place to call home
-
3 pointsThere wasn't but.. If you are not into originality it would be a lot cheaper to use a solenoid and a simple switch. I converted my L107 to electric start used a solenoid and intermittent push push button for the starter. I used the original toggle switch for killing engine and put the push button in the plugged hole used for the ignition switch on L157's.

3 pointsBryce, Keep warm and safe. It sounds like you're getting hit hard. It's raining here at my house as I typed this, but the temperature is holding at 33 degrees, so it's all liquid now.

3 pointsMerged your two threads into one. Glad to see ya figured out the picture thing....these guys feed on pictures! Mike......
-
3 pointsIf the valve "hits" the spark plug could be that the valve is bent?!?! It looks like it is in the picture. Wrong spark plug?
-
3 pointsYup,That's the exhaust valve and its stuck open.Thats the problem. You will need to remove the valve and clean the stem and valve guide.Nothing hard core if you have a valve spring compressor. The cleaning is relatively simple.Light attention with scotchbright or fine grit sand paper.Make sure to use a new head gasket at reassembly. They are not that expensive.

3 pointssort of an older post , but i recieve'd a free plow and a frame from a farm i delivered to, but they had cut off all of the tabs and handles. so i made new parts to replace missing components. one of the things i disliked about switching from plow to blower was the handle was always in the way . so i made a handle that is removeable without unhooking blade swing rod.

2 pointsAre these inside and outside cast wheel horse weights? I've never seen the ones with the notch for the valve stem before. Rare??

2 pointsI would say not. I looked up the stens number you have. The terminals do not look heavy enough to me. Also the schematic shows sol (for solenoid) not s for starter. Toro still has 101482 the replacement for 4987
-
2 pointsHi, its a magnum and I think it is a '97 (last yr for Magnums). The Command ohv motors are ok (I guess) but to me dont have the torgue of the old K's and Mags. Tony

2 pointsN3PUY has a good eye and a very good point.Check to see if the exhaust valve is bent when you get it out.
-
2 pointsSounds like Jim got you headed in the right direction. One more thing, after ti is running and has warmed up remember to torque the head bolts again.
