Steve. 37.5 years old from O'Fallon, IL. Originally from Granite City, IL. Lived in Alton, IL; St. Louis, MO; South Bend, IN; and West Lebanon, IN. Geez, do I miss Indiana! I'm a chemical engineer. Went to a fancy-pants college and saw how the other half lives. Somehow, I ended up specializing in composite materials so get to play with glass, carbon fiber, kevlar, polymers, etc. for a defense contractor here in St. Louis. My wife and I have been married for nearly 14 years, although it probably seems like a lot longer than that for her. We have two kiddos; "the boy" who is 8 and my little princess who is 6. My son has Autism, which means our priorites now are a lot different than they were 8 years ago. I did the stay-at-home dad thing for almost 5 years. Now my wife, who is a family practice doctor, does the stay home duties and loves it. With the lousy climate in the medical industry, I doubt she'll ever go back to that profession. My interest in this WH nonsense started in 1987 when dad bought a NEW tractor for the yard. It kind of snowballed from there into a collection spanning from 1946 to 1999. In the last couple of years I haven't had any freetime to do anything with the tractors and have considered dumping the whole pile of them many times. If it wasn't for the great group of people on this forum and in the hobby, I probably would have called it quits already. I also try to get into my woodworking shop as much as possible. And I love to fish. In fact, I find it hard to believe that there are people in this world who DON'T fish. I mean, jeez, they're wasting their lives... Nice topic for a thread! Steve

Well, I made an attempt to video my blowing progress with my 416-H and single stage blower during winter storm Nemo, but cold fingers and iPods don't work very well. I thought I had the camera rolling, only to find out later that I didn't. When I finally figured it out, my fingers were to cold to keep going, but did get some footage. Even with the short video, there is no question what is under the hood! I will do better next time.

Well today is my 20 year anniversary, at the body shop, not sure if it makes me happy or sad?? most body men only stay at one shop 5 years or so and move on, I make pretty good money but it is hard labor for the most part, I've been doing body work for near 30 years now, and it's taking it's toll on my body, I'm only 46 but there are days I feel 90, my hands don't work as good as they did years ago, I've been pushing my kids to get a good education and get good jobs so they don't have to do the hard manual labor, save that for the hobbies and such, heck I've been at this shop longer than any thing else I've ever done.

I guess I have to chalk that comment up to an easy mistake to make - since I didn't hack it out with a chainsaw or gouge it out with a screwdriver it may have been easy to miss. Some may be wondering about the the holes in the base - these are not "mistakes". They are holes to for the indexing pins to allow the case halves to lie flat when pushing in the bearings / seals. My days of working on on a cold floor or laying on a stack of wood piled in the the mud are over. The time has arrived when I choose to pursue my hobbies in a more gentlemen-like manner, whenever possible.

i mentioned in another thread that mike (squonk) and ken b werent the only ones who have naughty beagles..... well i wanted to start a thread on all the nonsense that our beagle 'max' gets up to. tonight he gave me a real good one to start off with. see, we have a keurig coffee machine that uses the k cups. up until about an hour ago we kept the k cups in a bowl on the table in our kitchen. here is the bowl... seems that somebody developed a taste for them....... now we are about to go to bed and he's not looking the best. he got 4 of them from what i can find. anybody find it easy to go to bed on 4 cups of coffee???

I had a Schnoodle...great dog. One day, my brother in law comes over to the house. I had a small garden, and I was growing banana peppers. My brother in law likes hot stuff. I picked one for him to taste and was holding it in my hand. Frisky jumps up and takes a big bite of the pepper in my hand. HEHEHE...all of a sudden the dog starts trying to cough up the pepper and is wiping his tongue on the grass. I thought he was going to die. I ran down into the basement grabbed his bowl and a beer and went back out and poured the beer into his bowl. He drank the whole beer and then went over by the garage and laid on his back with his feet up. What a riot...we were bent over. That dog never jumped up and took anything out of my hand again...with out sniffing it first. Martin...great pictures of the bad Beagle...they just look so guilty. :)

Saving horses, does not mean you have to save them for yourself, or put any money in them. We have a great network here and a ton of members that are looking for that one horse to make whole. I think it is a team effort. If one falls in your lap, and you don't need it or can't use it, show it in a post and see if it can go to a good home. Promoting this hobby is priceless. Ten years from now...someone will join Red Square and talk about how he got his first horse from some guy that saved it from scrap. :woohoo:

good qustion,i feel the same way towards almost having to keep them after spending some cash on them,i have rbuilt a few tractors including complete engine rebuilds,i cant get the money that i put into them back,not even close,so u just use them,but its nice to get tractors with decent engine and drive train,then its not so expensive to fix them up,i too am at the point where it has to be a really good tractor and fair price before i even look at them to buy,as far as what point to not spend on them,thats different for every one,but ultamately it boils down to money,sometimes a horse has to be sacrificed to keep other better shape tractors going,and if its past what a person wants to throw at it then i guess she has to go or be parted

Well, I'm Mike. I'm a 48 year old Kiwi that somehow ended up living in NE Ohio. Been married for 13 years now, and I have an 8 year old daughter. I started out as an automotive mechanic and jumped around the various specialties for a few years. I decided I wanted to travel the world and work on racing cars, did a couple of years in Europe before coming to the US for a year or two. I ended up meeting my wife and I'm still here. Lots of years working on opened wheeled racing cars, competed (in the pits) at the Indianpolis 500 5 times. Eventually I got tired of suitcases, airports and hotel rooms and am quite happy living the quiet life now. Currently I work for a company that restores Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts (anything up to about 1928). Everything from general service work to chassis up restoration, from weekend drivers to Pebble Beach concourse cars. My 8 year old keeps me busy, I dont play with my tractors as much as I would like, and I try to keep my 170 year old farmhouse from falling down around me.

Terry here. I was "WH1056" when I joined RedSquare. There seemed to be a rather heavy concentration of members named Terry back then. To tell us apart, some members referred to me as "Tricycle Terry". (because of my narrow-front Charger) That nickname was shortened to "TT" and I eventually had Karl change my user name so it was official - and quicker to log in. I live in central PA with my wife of over 6 years, and two dogs. I have one 19 year old son from a previous marriage. He is also a member here on the forum. I am employed as the head equipment technician at a private country club / 27 hole golf course and am about to start my fifth season there. Prior to February 2008, you could normally find me behind the wheel of a Mack. I can hold my own in general conversation, but don't bother asking me about sports of any kind - especially golf. In addition to the enjoyment of owning and using a few Wheel Horse tractors, I dabble in metal fabrication and welding, drawing, playing guitar badly, and posting on internet forums. :D

1961 Panzer t70 i got this it was painted red and engine needed rebuild. I got all engine parts from napa, I sand blasted the chassis and found pin holes on the bottom of the tubing. They had been full of dirt mud grass and water rotted the frame out.No way to repair it. so i made 2 new frame rails for it and welded them to the rear axle. set it up in milling machine and drilled all the holes. The tubing on these tractors where made from black pipe, gas pipe odd size so i picked up some from lowes. well heres the frame now. after having this thing for three years. I got some paint on it. I have a brand new NOS deck for it too.rear diff i put bearings seals new brake linings and made new front spindles.

I was thinking that we could get to know each other better if we knew more info about folks here. And, it may wind up helping us out if we know that someone has the same hobby. I suppose I should start since it's my idea. My name is Russell. 33 years old. I've been in the army reserves for 9 years. I am going to college to get a degree in alternative energy, specifically solar power. Married with four stepkids from my wife's first marriage. My hobbies other than wheel horses include trying to be a small time farmer, fishing, hunting, knife collecting, and gardening. Anyone.else?

Here is a quick post of a mid mount grader I just made. Couldn't justify the $350 for a 50in. so here is what I wanted anyway. A 5ft er. The blade started out as a 40in. I cut it in half a welded wings on each side to get my 60in length. For the lift spot I drilled into the main pivot bolt and threaded the hole to fit the bolt I use to lift it with. Any ? just ask. I'm sure there are plenty of you wanting a blade without the cost. Cost of this project minus welding rod and electricity .... $0. Still need to make a release handle to make it moveable from the seat.

i save lots of things from the scrappers. but don't get me wrong i junk off lots of stuff too. my latest horse i saved was a 310-8 with no engine. i sold this one to a member here who had a running engine, so 2 parts tractors became 1 running unit! jay

I can see why you want a new shifter. That one was definitely hit with an ugly stick.

The good news is that in my search for the correct replacement , I came across a guy with a power equipment repair business, who used to be a wheel horse dealer, so I now have another source who might be a bit more knowledgable than the local toro guy. Although he also confirmed that i need to rebuild the carb on my ariens walk behind .

Well the toro dealer is so swamped repairing snowblowers that it is impossible to get his attention. So I went to the hardware store and bought a generic spring. It seems to work ok , not as much tension as the one I took off. I don't know if the replacement parts come this way, but the one I took off has a very neat and complete red paint job, so it is possible it was the original spring. I guess 26 years is about all you can expect.

It's my turn to stop asking questions and make a real contribution to this awesome forum! Brought my first horse home three weeks ago (beautiful '92 312-8) and haven't REALLY had a chance to use it. So when this storm started to brew up earlier this week I was pumped to put the horse to the test for the first time. I decided to set up my camera and tri-pod and catch the action for all you guys by making a timelapse video. I hope you enjoy it! While I cannot speak for all of Lucas's products, I will RAVE about their Power Steering Stop Leak. I have a 2001 Saab 9-3 with a zillion miles on it and had a leaking power steering rack. Local repair place wanted to swap the rack. I tried the Lucas product for $8.00 and haven't looked back. It has been over 2 years and haven't had to add fluid once. With that experience I would not hesitate to try one of their other products.

HOLDING THE BELT SOMETIMES IT TAKES TWO PEOPLE. I ALWAYS TAKE THE NUTS OFF THE PULLEYS FIRST AND STOP. THEN GO UNDERNEATH THE DECK AND HIT THE BLADE NUTS WITH THE IMPACT WRENCH FOWARD AND REVERSE. THAT WAY THE OTHER PULLEYS HELP HOLD THE BELT TIGHT. THE FOUR 9/16" HEADED BOLT I HIT WITH IMPACT HARD AND FAST. I HAVE ONLY PULLED THE THREADS ON TWO HOLES OUT OF THE 50-75 I HAVE DONE. IF YOU PULL THE THREADS A NUT AND LONGER BOLT WILL REPAIR NICELY. WHEN INSTALLING I USE NICE CLEAN BOLTS WITH THE BLUE THREAD LOCKER. IT KEEPS THE MOISTURE OUT AND WILL STOP CORROSION. THAT IS WHAT WHEEL HORSE DID. GOOD LUCK BOWTIE

My brother Lane has one of those sweet gums in his front yard and they are really not "sweet". They jam up everything, mower, lawn sweeper, dethatcher and more!

getting back on this it's been awhile the tractor has been sand blasted all replacment parts have been purchased transmission cases have been painted and new bearings and seals installed hope to assemble transmission this week Brian

Have you tried your local Toro dealer? I have always managed to buy one off the shelf there, never had to have them get one in for me. I buy as much as possible from my local dealer. Their prices are only a little above the online prices, But with not having to pay shipping it is pretty much the same. And I'd like them to stay in business, and to continue to carry parts for my tractors.

Easiest way I found to hold it is in a Workmate. You want to lay it on it's shallow side to disassemble it. Another way is to stack two rear tires & wheels and let the axle housing go down into the center hole of the wheel.

Ken B here. 44 yrs. old and still counting. I grew up in a family full of gear heads, so naturally I'm a gear head. I have been toying with tractors since I was about 12 yrs. old. It was always fun when the kids in the neighborhood were trying to catch my LAWN TRACTOR with their go cart! Fresh out of trade school where I took auto shop for 4 yrs. I worked with one of my older brothers in the remodeling trade for a few yrs. When things got slow there I went to work for another older brother who owned his own electrical business for 4 yrs. Things slowed down there and that is where I began my time in the automotive field. I worked for a Chevy dealer as a Tech working mostly on trucks. I was there for at least 10 yrs. when I had had enough of flat rate and warranty work. I had a friend that offered me a job at the local mall as a service tech. I took care of all of the electrical maint. and upkeep of all of the malls plow trucks, pay loaders and general equipment. When a job was offered at Edelman Leather I took it. I'm the building supervisor, the only service and maint. tech and I build the companies trade show sets (which are large and in charge!) For all of my efforts I was awarded Employee of the yr. 2 yrs ago! Woo Hoo! Not too shabby for a company that has well over 125 employees. I'm big time into my hobbies. I have been there, done that, and I am finished with the muscle car hobby. I enjoy restoring vintage race boats and antique outboard motors. I enjoy the Wheel Horse hobby more than any other hobby I have ever taken up. I love the tractors but I think above all else it is the guys I have the most fun with. I have been married for 19 yrs. now. I have two great sons, Jesse is 18 and is away at college in Philly taking up architecture and Cole is 10. We have one dog, a real naughty Beagle.

Hi from the flatlands of Missouri...I'm Frank (member #7) and a 1942 model!...been retired for 8 years...spent 30 years in the mfg industry ....have one daughter and triplet grandsons....spend alot of time on the family farm "tinkerin'" with some faded red stuff when I have time. Got to attend the big show in PA...not once but twice and got to meet alot of you guys...was lucky enough to meet and shake hands with Mr Pond at BOTH shows....will probably cherish the late nite "WH Cruze" at the PA show the most, thanks to Eldon for loaning me a WH to ride!!! When I run out of stuff to do, I tinker with street rods, (38' Ford bowtie powered), fly RC planes, stained glass, family tree stuff, fish (bign's). follow the triplets in baseball, farm a bit, (did I forget "tinker" w/WH's?)..spend money on wine and women and waste the rest....it's been a fun ride and I'm still enjoying it....stop by the old Horse Barn some time and say "HI"

I'm Jim. I'm 61 years old and graduated from high school in 1970. I married my high school sweetheart later that year and we had a son and two beautiful daughters together. She however, stopped being a sweetheart in 1977. I then met my current wife Karen and we married in 1979 and have a beautiful daughter together. Karen is my strength. We bought a B60 in 1983 with a plow and deck. It was and still is a great machine, cutting the grass here to this day. I now have three more Horses in the corral to use and enjoy. I have done three refurb's and a fourth will hopefully be done this summer. I worked in a box factory for 23 years, then went into business as an electrical contractor. I closed the business in 2000 and went to work as a machinist. I am currently running CNC lathes in a local machine shop. I also spent 10 years as a volunteer fireman and was an EMT with the fire dept. rescue squad. And, by the grace of God, I am a cancer survivor. :)

Ok, I'll go. I am Karl, 49 years old with 3 kids 15, 13, and 11 (soon to be 12). I am a computer scientist by trade, but enjoy the simpler things in life far more. I enjoy everything automotive and mechanical. Aside from the horses, I have an eclectic collection of Lionel trains most of which are very rare. I enjoy camping, well technically RV'ing in our 35' 5th wheel. I do enjoy getting outdoors but in the warmer weather and swimming, clearing the brush from my 2.5 acres and playing with the kids and dog. I consider myself extremely handy and have no issues tackling anything from soldering SMD's on a circuit board, repairing the household appliances, to getting deep and dirty into my 6.0l Diesel. A considerable amount of spare time is keeping RedSquare up and running, testing new versions of software, keeping things cleaned up so it runs smooth. For me the community aspect of this forum over shadows the technical aspects and I really enjoy everyone's company. I am always grateful for the generousity and friendship of people that I may never shake hands with, it constantly amazes me.

I'm Bob. I'm 62. I live in central Maryland with my wife of almost 41 years, and 3 cats. I have a son & daughter-in-law with two boys, ages 9 and 3. I also have a daughter & son-in-law with two boys ages 4 and 18 months. I was a radioman in the Coast Guard from 1968 to 1972. Worked for 34 years in the office equipment industry, owning my own copier & printer sales and service company for 15 years. Sold the business in 2006 and am currently a semi-retired home improvement contractor (handyman). My hobbies include collecting antique cameras, and I am an accomplished cabinet maker and antique furniture restorer. My fascination with Wheel Horse tractor began in 1993 when I purchased my first, a 1977 B-100. I now have a collection of five. My spare time is consumed with the 4 grandsons, and I am always tinkering with a horse to show at the annual Wheel Horse show. Because I have a lot of free time between jobs, I spend a good deal of it here on RedSquare. When the wife and I find the time, we like to travel to the National Parks and take in the beauty that is these great United States.

I'll jump in! I'm Mike, 46 years old, live in Connecticut, married just over twenty years with two kids, one dog and one cat. My son is 17 and has been to every WH show I've been to (approx 7) and a 14 year old daughter who would never go to a tractor show . I was a licensed electrician for 24 years here in Ct. Did a career swap 2-1/2 years ago and I'm now working for a Navy Defence contractor ( Submarines not surface ships) as a project manager and travel all over the country for my job. Besides the WH problem I cant shake, I also like to fish (any state except Vermont...long story ), picked up a small bass boat last year. My family camps alot and we now leave our camper permanently on a campsite in Connecticut on a 528 acre lake. I love sitting by the fire on summer nights knockin a couple cold ones back! I ride my motorcycle when I can, nice to just get out and cruise with no real destination! I also seem to collect flashlights for some reason, have about 30 or so. A few older ones but mostly newer oddball stuff. Definitly cheaper and easier to store than tractors! A buddy of mine (whchris) started the Redsquare Wheel Horse Site back in 2006 when he was still in High School (thats right! High School!) and he e-mailed me and asked me to join up so he wouldn't be alone and maybe we could generate some interest in his fledgling site. Thats how I became member #2. My buddy of course is member #1 but we dont see him here anymore unfortunately . Mike......

Might as well put a Navy guy in here. ..1970 to 1974. Retired from the phone company as a lineman and a splicer..35 years. I have enjoyed going to the tractor shows for the last 4 years and meeting the members there...they are a fantastic group. When I first got on this site, all I had was questions...now I have been able to contribute by helping members rebuild their transmissions...the early 3 piece and the 3 and 4 speed uni-drives. This is a great group, and it has been my pleasure to be able to give something back. I have 4 horses and I really look forward to snow to be able to use them...I am not so much into mowing grass. I love fishing, home wine making, watching the sun go from one end to the other, and hanging out here. It keeps me young. :happy-jumpeveryone:
