How do I properly use this hole saw on pine?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

I need to cut some circles of 3/4" thick pine.

Found this at a friend's house.

High RPM?

Low pressure?

Any tips or tricks?

Thanks.

Very carefully.

I'd use it in a drill press at slow speed.  I would not even attempt to use it in a hand held drill.

That's the plan.

Figured I could clamp the work piece to the table too.

He'd hold the board with his teeth and run the drill press with a sandal covered toe.

WHX??

Naw the Hosen  he would just stick it in his hand...

I got one like that at work ... cuts up to 14" holes  for putting round registers in ceilings. Worked good for boxcar siding other than a mouth full of saw dust.

That would work but a hole saw might  work better best ask @formariz or one of the other silver wizards here. @953 nut????

I need 4" diameter circles to fit snugly into a 4" PVC pipe.

I could get a hole saw but rather not spend the money if this'll work.

If size works, I’d use a hole saw…

I had a cutter like that at one time, it did a poor job and lots of tear-out on cross grain. I threw it away and never missed it. I would suggest you invest in a set of hole saws. for wood working you should wax the hole saw inside and out, go slow and clear the sawdust frequently.

If I want a 4" OD circle what size hole saw is that?

It's the circles I need. Not the holes...

I've got one exactly like that one and another similar, and, have used them many times for just the type thing you are needing. Will do great on wood and I have even fell back on one for an odd ball piece of metal.

As mentioned your piece will have to be VERY well clamped/held and a drill press set at a pretty slow speed and feed it slowly  To get a circle you will need to reverse the bit..... and you just might have to make a couple "prototypes" to get the feel of it, cause its .... different!

With this thing you can fiddle with it and end up with an exact size and I dont think a hole saw would do that, plus, as you said it'd be pricy!

Ahhh duh...  a four inch hole saw?!? The saw kerf might not make for a snug fit if that's what you are aiming for. Maybe you best just tell what the hell you are trying to make.  Prolly something stupid knowing you so humor us.... ....oh and so we can rib you somemore....:ychain:

I wants me a 4" outside diameter circle.

Not a 4" inside diameter hole.

I'm lookin at making up a bolt bin outta 4" PVC.  Need dividers.

So you see. I have these big meat stick hands and they're kind of tough to get into little divided drawers.

So I did some poking around on the interwebs and I found that you can take a 4" piece of PVC pipe... cut about a third off of one side.

Screw that to the wall.

Every 5" you put a piece of 3/4 pine as a divider.

Makes a nice smooth inside radius to be able to grab hardware off of with no sharp corners.

Maybe I'll even paint them red to keep @WHX?? Jim happy...

I’d say a 4” hole saw plug, and some construction glue, it will take up any slack in the design of the bolt bins.  As for me, I’m far above the pay grade on running drills.  That’s a job for Rylee and her flip flops!

As it  been mentioned before, only use that thing in a drill press. Make sure that everything is clamped properly and go slow with it. Make sure cutter is sharp. Probably has been used on drywall. If so it is not sharp. Also make sure all cutter holding screw is tight. Gentle pressure slow speed. avoid that thing cutting even the smallest of knots Make sure, make sure, make sure or it can make for a very bad day.

Why don't you glue and nail some boards together to make the bins what ever size you want.

The only benefit I’d see is that the PVC being round is easy to scoop out of.
