Confused about ignition switch

Hello all.Ok I’m trying to learn about which  ignition switch on a 73 auto 12hp model 10465.

when I look at the back of the switch there is 5 terminals .I cleaned the terminals off and they are stamped S + A+ M+G and a green wire to a terminal that is not marked ?

 

Im confused as to if it is a 4 key position or 3 ? 
I need to order a new one as it’s completely worn out.I included a picture.It only has a patient number far as I can see.

I’ve read and looks like it could be a 92-6785 or a 101917 switch?

Does your tractor have points and a battery ignition or is it a trigger type with a magneto?

It’s has battery ignition with points and stator kohler 301.

Points ignition should be able to use a Toro 103990. That's a 3 position switch. 

You may have a 4 position switch but your tractor can be rewired easily to adapt.

I thought switches with an "M" were for non-points tractors?

 

Is my train of thought correct?

 Replace switch with 103990.  73 had an accessory position on  the switch. Wire it up as a 103990

There shouldn't be an M on the switch. Sounds like someone installed the wrong switch at some point

Yes the stator and amp meter  weren’t hooked up at all and someone replace part of the wires to different color too.

I would get a 103990 switch and start from scratch.

Seems a VERY common thing to. 

The newer wrong switch is very easy to aquire.

Treat each circuit as its own individual task.  

Double check your triple checks so you don't let the magic smoke out of the wiring. 

 

Repeat a few times and... Done.

Also... Get a good name brand quality switch. Please. 

 

There are a lot of cheap switches that will offer you a very short life span.  

 

The Toro switch is available for $18-$25 depending where you look.  Sten's is also good.

@Wheelhorse#1 in addition to getting the correct switch , would consider replacing those original cables , could easily be corroded inside , causing issues. found many original wires , to be very stiff , cracking easily , internal corrosion . why not change it all out ? only my experience , pete

Advice we’ll taken.Just order a stens replacement,I have had good experience with replacement parts  from them.

Now trying to find decent copper replacement wire.

The drawing below may help with your confusion. Each portion of the electrical system is separated from others so you can see what goes where. This is not a wiring diagram for your tractor as it has no safety switches. It is drawn with the 103-990 ignition switch.

The new switch is to be delivered today so when I trace it out I’ll post.

A replacement wire holder for the switch terminals is available with and without wires.

Click on the picture to see it. Makes a nice installation. The wires colors do not match what we have.

I received the switch today.I removed all the wires.So I found  the M terminal magnito was wired into the rectifier🤷‍♂️ but the the two wires coming out of the stator weren’t hooked up just dangling.

I know the stator still works at least.When I rebuilt the motor I tested the leads coming out wile it was running.

 

One question.Will a weak ground cause the starter to turn slowly?

I hook up the switch temporarily  just too see if she would turn over, it did but slowly. 

I had the switch out of the dash and just laying on top of the tower.The battery reads 13v.
