I finally found a few minutes to start finishing my hood ornaments.

First one i'm getting ready for a rusty finish. This primer has to dry until tomorrow. Then I will be painting it with a paint that contains iron dust.

Second one is getting ready for a chrome finish. This high gloss black will have to dry for about a week before the chrome finish can be applied.

OK, so the rust finish tuned out waayyy beyond my expectations. :greetings-clappingyellow: I'm so happy with it that I'm going to make you scroll down to see the picture, just for dramatic effect.

I plan on using a matte clear over this hood ornament yet to preserve the finish. I will post a picture of that tomorrow.

If any one is interested in this type of finish and would like to know what I used, here is the product.

If you are using it on plastic they recommend using a primer designed to be used on plastic first. This is the primer that I used before I started applying their product.

FYI - This same company makes kits to achieve a copper patina (green) and a bronze patina (blue). I think that either of these colors would look awesome on one of 3D's wall mount creations.

I got mine locally at Hobby Lobby. Home Depot carries it as well but I'm not sure if they have it in the small kits. With the small kit that I bought I could probably do 10 more hood ornaments yet.

Then there is always the jungle site.

https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Masters-306293-Finish-Effects/dp/B01LWT0Q5R/ref=asc_df_B01LWT0Q5R/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=216800360809&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7529572874816292072&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9018899&hvtargid=pla-415037017917&psc=1

Or search Modern Masters Metal Effect Rust or Patina for the copper & bronze.

In lieu of that, maybe sand, or concrete and scrap bolts as filler? Doubt that would bring it to 50lbs but maybe 30lbs. Interesting question will be can the print handle the weight!

Wheel weight Hubcaps done! Made an error somewhere in diameter that resulted in a better overall design. The plastic still provides the spring but added screws make the tension and depth adjustable and the disk fits just inside the rim of the weight!

A few weeks ago I posted that I was starting to finish my hood ornaments. Tonight I was finally able to work on the chrome finish on the second one. So far I am quite impressed with the product that I choose.

The Horse head still needs a little light buffing in some areas to remove some over spray.

The Chrome is sprayed in multiple light coats. First coat did not even look like I did anything, 8 coats of chrome paint to achieve the final finish.

Tomorrow it will get a couple coats of Moto Storm MototClear to protect the finish.

That‘s awesome!

great look.

did you set a basecolor of Black ahead?

the most chromefinish i seen needs urgently a black base color before to get such a finish.

but the result is hardly impressive i love it.

I’m building a lowered 300 series wheelhorse. So far it’s a combination of 3 scrap tractors.
the frame, trans and tins are from a GT2500 anniversary special given to me by a neighbor with a trashed Briggs. The Kohler M12 is from a junkyard 312 that was roached. The parts tractor I’m using for the build was another older 312. I’ve got the k301 in the garage. The trans was toast. Both axles wallowed out keyways and 1 axle actually broken.
Anyway! I needed a project and a toy to putt around the neighborhood. I couldn’t find any other posts on how to do the whole thing. I’m trying to keep it cheap using stuff I have on hand and looking as “stock but cooler” as possible. So here we go.
I’ll update this as I go along.
