The "Colossus" project

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

A little more work done over the weekend.

I had started to disassemble a transmission to put the axles and seals in then decided to change to another one.

I remembered that the other has bad axle keyways and I'm swapping out the axles... So why use a transmission that's still good...

Maybe Wednesday or Thursday I'll get to that...

Trina disassembled and cleaned the front axle and spindles.

Then painted the axle.

Also..   the first RED paint was sprayed!!

The rear fenders have their first coat.

This is Rust-Oleum Apple Red Gloss.

@Stormin

She wants you to know that she has more than one pair of socks.

What have you found to be the best way to remove old caked on grease?

In the summer I would use engine degreaser or oven cleaner and then the power washer. This time of year that's not an option. Probably going to haul everything to the car wash and use degreaser.

@Cvans we use commercial degreasers, brake clean, power washer when we can... utility sink if not.

Remove big stuff with scrapers it rags.

Then clean with acetone 2 or 3 times minimum.

The cleaner we've found works well to remover grease is called INCREDIBLE PINK.

Local to us. Probably available by mail.

What’s this?  Red that looks like a :wh: on an EB and BBT creation? I’ll be excited to see it come together and compliment the browns!

if you go on rustoleum.com ... pull up a color chart for apple red gloss and then do the same thing for poppy red.

Poppy red is the color of Trina's pony tractor. 657.

This Apple Red is the same basic tone as the IH or horse color but a little bit brighter red.

Interesting. Found this on line.

Incredible PinkThis is a Made in Maine cleaning spray (you can order it on line) but the grocery store I go to does carry it, I have never used a spray cleaner that works this well. It is non toxic. I spray some in my coffee pot ( the pot itself not the maker) to get rid of those horrible brown stains and it comes out looking brand new, I use it every where even in the laundry. spray it on let it sit a minute and wipe. I have used it for about 5 yrs and am still amazed!!! I even wrote the company. :-)

Never heard of it. One of my favorite cleaners was mineral spirits. Used to buy it for $2 a gallon. When servicing ammonia compressors it was our go to cleaner as it left no residue.

One of my long time favorites was good old lye. Used to be able to buy it at the local grocery for about a buck a can and literally made gallons of degreaser, but it’s getting harder to find as well as more expensive. Just had to be mighty careful when working with the stuff. It actually doubles as a degreaser and excellent paint remover, so NOT recommended unless you have a good paint department (which I see you have covered, Eric)! 😀

I did an Google search on where to buy Incredible Pink near me and it told me Victoria's Secret. I did not know they carried cleaning products!

@Stepney was nice enough to stop by and visit with us.

We tore into the 8 speed I'll be using in the project.

It's the one of the three 8 speeds I have that already has visible badly damaged axle keyways.

I'm using axles that were generously offered by @19richie66 from a GT14.

The GT14 axles are approximately 6" total wider than the C-series this transmission came out of.

The dish of the 15" wheels are an inch or so deeper so... the tractor will be 4" wider than a standard size C-series, give or take...

The internals look good. No visible excess wear.

I'll double check the wheel bearings, install 4 new seals and clean/reassemble.

At the lower left of the pic you can see the C-series axle beside the GT14 axle for a length comparison.

Get it cleaned up and put back together.  The paint department can paint it when it's back together.

Trina did a little more grinding on some "pahts"  today.

She wore different socks so you all would know she has different socks.

I've left the transmission to drain for a couple weeks now.

Cleaned out with brake clean and degreaser.

That should be ready to reassemble when I get time.

I’m glad you let BBT wear more than one pair of socks.  Otherwise she’s look like she has hobo socks.  Like mine sometimes...  I feel like holding a celebration of life when I see another sock in the laundry trash...

looking forward to seeing Colossus come together!

Just a little more cleaning/soaking/transmission inspection this evening.

Trina and I checked over the roller bearings...

Most bearings are in good condition.

I have a bad outer roller bearing on one half... And a bad roller ball bearing in the other half. 1533??

I think I have other cases with decent 1533 bearings....

We shall see....

@ebinmaine Looks like you have a real nice project going there. You also seem to have some very capable help at hand. Can't wait to see more progress pictures. Are you going to have it ready for the Owl's Head show?

I'm hoping to have it running by May or June..

I'd really like to use it for this year's foresting.

Won't likely bring it to Owls Head because I'm limited by tow capacity.

It'll be a heavy bugger.

 ((800 - 900lbs??))

I'd LOVE to have it there ... so I may have to beg a buddy for a truck.

I'll (most likely) bring Cinnamon Horse and Trina will either have the military tribute '66 or her 867 "Pony".

Ya sounds a bit soggy at 800 or 900lbs. Do you have a pic of the military tribute or the others?
