ebinmaine 63,137 #1 Posted August 18, 2019 I've messed around with carburetors big and small for maybe 25 or 30 years? This is definitely the one that is absolutely the worst condition I've ever seen. Several different types of corrosion and there is white and tan colored gel built up all inside of the fuel bowl area. Corrosion inside a couple of the galley holes blocked them so much I didn't even realize they were there. I took it all apart and carefully scraped it out and it is now soaking for a few days. One serious question though. The main jet is screwed into the bottom. That hole was literally filled with rust. I found that a little odd considering the carburetor is aluminum and the jet is likely brass? Maybe the bottom bolt holding the bowl on is steel and that's where the rust came from. That jet does NOT want to move. Is it super important that I take it out and clean in there or should I be able to just spray through or blow through with compressed air...
pacer 3,159 #2 Posted August 18, 2019 YUCK!! Thats a nasty one. I've had a couple almost that bad and there was no way that jet was coming out. I'd think it'd be time to order up one of those $15 carbs off the bay.
pfrederi 17,147 #3 Posted August 18, 2019 That is ugly. i would try cleaning you are very likely to damage the jet fighting with it. Be interesting to see if there are Chicom knockoffs carbs for the big iron K series Twins

Be interesting to see if there are Chicom knockoffs carbs for the big iron K series Twins I haven't looked yet. I wasn't impressed with the one I got for the Cinnamon Horse. This carb throat is very large. I'll let it sit in the soup for a few days and see if it'll clean up. The needle itself was not too awful so hopefully the seat will be ok. I usually spray carb. cleaner into it and blow it out with compressed air and most of the time have good luck doing that. As for a new carb. this place sells them: https://isavetractors.com/carburetor-for-kohler-k582-engine-4805306s/ It's a bit more expensive than $15 but I've put a few on different machines from him and haven't had any issues. Had to adjust the high speed needle on one a little bit but the rest of them went on haven't had to touch them since
ebinmaine 63,137 #6 Posted August 18, 2019 @diesel cowboy Yeah I saw that listed in a quick search. I may very well go that route. I've not bought anything from Norman yet but I've spoken to him by phone or email a couple times. Great guy.

oliver2-44 8,852 #12 Posted August 18, 2019 I use the small wires on a torch tip cleaner to run through all the holes. spray them out with carb cleaner, then gently run the wire through again, repeat.

That's another great idea lee. I have plenty of old guitar strings laying around. In fact my guitar needs new strings so I'll keep the old ones.

The engine was likely from a piece of construction equipment originally. Base paint is yellow with blue above that and a couple areas with army od green. I'm hoping to shoehorn it into an old horse. ebinmaine 63,137 #19 Posted August 25, 2019 @jabelman @Lee1977 @The Tool CribCri And others... I'll post more pictures in a few minutes showing the carb itself. This is the cleaner that I use. I've had it for a couple years and I can't remember why I did not buy the Berryman's but I've been very very satisfied with this Gunk brand kit.
richmondred01 2,205 #20 Posted August 25, 2019 Not to steal you thread but has anyone noticed that the gunk and Berryman chem dip been getting a blueish green slime on the bottom? Any thoughts? The alcohol in the gas?

Any thoughts? The alcohol in the gas? never worry about stealing one of my threads. We are all here to share as much information as possible. The alcohol in the gas could be causing that, yes. I'm only guessing here but when we all see what we refer to as ethanol pearls in the bowl of a carburetor I don't see why that stuff would not accumulate into the bottom of the dip can. The other thing would be the dissolving of the corrosion of copper or brass parts. Note the pictures above ... there was already a fair pile of brown and white and tan slime or sludge inside this carburetor. Of course I did the best I could to wipe that stuff away manually but there's no way I got it all.
ebinmaine 63,137 #22 Posted August 25, 2019 Here's a couple pictures of the carburetor in its cleaned up state. I am extremely impressed with the way this thing came out. 2 days soaking. Removed all parts and gently brushed them by hand with a wire brush under lukewarm water. 4 more days soaking. Finished cleaning up with the wire brush and a little sandpaper where it was necessary.
