My grandmother was kind of funny. Used to irritate her to no end that little old ladies would drive so damn slow. Now mind you... she was probably 70 or older when she said that. She got to be about mid eighties I would say and she went and turned in her driver's license. She didn't want to be one of those... 2

The closest she got was moving the pickup around the huge front yard at their old farm when grandpa was at work. Very slowly... 1

One time I thought of something similar to remove a stuck steering wheel from the shaft.Steering wheel was plastic and didn't want to damage it. Idea was to hit it from other side of block. Fast forward fifty years (pun intended) and she was very comfortable driving 85 MPH. Fortunately she voluntarily surrendered her license on her ninetieth birthday. By the way, she never had an accident and never had a citation for speeding. There was a NY State Trooper that followed her into the driveway once. He had observed her exceeding the speed limit, but he then realized my mother had been his third grade teacher and he just had a nice talk with her, didn't even mention her speed! 1

The 1 3/4" gear shift knobs that Glenn Pettet sells are threaded for a 3/8" shift lever which fits everything but my beloved 953/1054 models which are a 1/2-13 thread. I needed something to securely hold the knob while I drilled and tapped it for the larger thread. I turned the 1 3/4" hole so the knob fit snugly then cut it in half with a table saw. The saw kerf allows the bolts to draw it up tightly and can be clamped to the drill press without harming the knob. 6
formariz 11,902 #641 Posted May 18, 2019 @953 nutGood idea. Clever. You actually had me going. Wife caught me outside looking at a horse with a stick ruler in my hand trying to figure out what was 1-3/4". Sure enough she had one of her usual remarks" just what the heck are you planning to do to it now". Seems like every time I am looking at a tractor I get caught. 1
