How rough can an engine pulley be... And still usable?

I pulled the engine pulley from the C100 to put on the Cinnamon Horse.

The belt was quite well rusted to the pulley and it has a pretty rough V groove surface.

I know Pulleys are supposed to be pretty much smooth.

Just wondering how much one can get away with....

Buy a cheap belt run it for a while and let the belt polish it up  May be jerky starting and stopping but the belt will polish the pulley belt will wear but then replace it. easier than trying to use wire wheel Emory cloth etc to clean up the pulley.

Eric I just bought a pulley  for my 1067 through eBay I couldn't find anywhere else. Paid  21 bucks for it was a perfect fit . As far as a pulley being rough rusted it could possibly wear out the belt early. What pulley do you mean?

EB can you put it on the shaft out near the end let the engine idle and run some sandpaper cloth on it? Got to be careful. Might be able to make a stick that is V shaped and staple the paper to it. Put it on the side that is running away from you?

I agree. Let the engine do the work while you very carefully apply a sheet abrasive/steel wool to polish it up.

You can progressively go with finer grits of emery or wet paper.

Its not like you are going to hog 0.10" off a V profile doing this.

Seems simple to moi.

I had had that same thought.

I may have some NOS Wheelhorse belts in the auction pile.

 

 

I've already cleaned it up quite a bit in preparation for paint so most of the rust and scale is gone.

Not sure.... Original . Pulley as far as I know.

Joe and Steve I think I may do the "engine as lathe mount" as suggested.

Should have the cinnamon running soon.

 

If nothing else I can at least take the high spots off.

Eric if you remove all scale and high spots the  belts will hold up  spray some paint on mainly to fill the pits in on the pulleys  and keep them from rusting more the paint will wear off were the belt runs but will stay in the pit holes

 

I have fixed many pulleys with a sandblaster and a can of spray paint

I've had to weld and re-turn the profile on two older cast HA engine pulleys now - not exactly a fun job but it can be done. Using off the shelf belts that are the standard profile will cause a wear groove on an HA profile pulley - if they get bad enough the belt cannot transmit full torque from the engine. The last one I repaired was for the old 1277 - then a few weeks later I found a NOS pulley on eBay, go figure.

 

If the thing is really bad, I'd hunt for another one - otherwise you end up wrecking some expensive belts.

 I agree with @OILUJ52 here. Just be careful not a lot, then old belt, to be sure everything is good then new belt

Uh, I'd replace that one for sure - not much left of it and the surface is gone too deep with pitting. It would be a belt-eating animal at best.

I am with Sarge I wouldn't waste my time on that i didn't realize it was that bad. Its not like it is rare. Belts get to be expensive.

Yep. In Hoosier speak, I'd say "its a goner" or "seen better days".

Much more heavily pitted than I imagined.......

Probably would make decent paperweight.

Think i would try to rework it on a lathe.

it seems to me there is enough Material in spare to being carefully reworked.

         I would replace it too. By time you filled the deep pits with JB Weld and sanded it smooth you would have more time in it than it is worth.

The reason I ask, is because there were 4 speed C-100s, but I haven't been able to identity the engine pulley for that set up.

May be different, maybe not. Don't know.

Does the pulley that came off the tractor say 7466?

That's what I get viewing your pic.

It is a 7466

That's the number Lincoln gave me as well.

 

That C100 is currently a 4 but was an 8.
