If you want to have the cleaned parts flash rust just spritz them with muriatic acid then give them a good water rinse and set them in the sun to dry fast.

Back to a little bit of body work...  though I’d rather strip, bondo and repaint, I suppose I’m anxious to see what a wet sand and clear looks like on this monster!

I’ve heard vinegar will flash rust too.  I don’t have any muratic acid, but I should probably get some for the chlorine generator in the pool house...

To rust the new parts that I made for my Rat Rod, I mixed a solution of 16oz hydrogen peroxide,2oz white vinegar,& 1tbs of salt. I put this mixture in a spray bottle for ease of application. If you spray this solution on clean bare metal it will rust immediately. I would let it dry then spray it again, this was repeated 6 times. The parts were then hung out side, using a spray bottle I would spray them with water any time that I walked by them. I did this for about a week. Last process ( I was able to get away with this, some wives are not as understanding) I put my parts in the oven at 500 degrees until they had darkened to a color that I liked. A propane torch may work just as well for the darkening process.

I really need to get this thing done!

 I’m so happy to have the countdown started again, but every day I work on something else, I feel the pressure like last year all over again.

I believe now, fabrication is finished!  Next on the list is pull to the engine, split the transmission from the frame, fix a few leaks, clean then clear the chassis.  After that, wet sand and clear all the tins.  I am going to re-wire it, with the proper switch, fuses and a light circuit.

I sort of think you already answered this earlier but I couldn't find the post. Are those drums on the axles? Adapters of some sort?

Nobody has asked, nor pointed out the 3/8” threaded rod used as “secondary key ways” in the axles.  I plan to replace them with grade 2 bolts, I made that trip to the store last week.

 

Anywho, they are the ratcheting hubs that came from the David Bradley 2 wheeled tractor.  They were designed to allow for turning on a solid axle machine, they allow reverse while still being driven.  They just fit the axles on Frank and since the DB wheels have a larger bolt pattern, I just used them.

I'm not at all a big fan of ammeters and have not been for most of my life having seen problems in both cars and tractors.

A voltmeter is more my style.

They are definitely two different gauges with two different purposes.

I've just always understood how to look at a voltmeter and see what is going on just as easily and a voltmeter that isn't working is just a pain. A shorted out ammeter can melt stuff. Bad bad bad.

 

 

I like the idea of an hour meter and we use them on some of our equipment at work but on my own home tractor I change the oil once or twice a year anyways and really don't pay a lot of attention to the reading on an hour meter so I don't put them back into the ones that we've been building.

 

 

 

Just for you EB, I decided to move to a volt meter instead of ammeter.  My ignition switch I wired up a while back isn’t quite all I hoped for, so I found a new replacement that I’ll have to re-wire again.  Why not use this time to upgrade?

If being wet and smooth is any indication of what gloss clear is gonna look like.... I hate to admit this.... but Mrs. Pullstart was probably....   right.
