So I have been working on a 656 I picked up at the end of last year and I did my first ever motor rebuild by my self on it. However it seems that I have lots of play in the piston and some slop at TDC more then I should have. So to finish the year mowing I am thinking of doing a predator swap while I go over the engine again. I am sure several people have done this before and I have a spare mounting plat to make it work. I am wondering if anyone has any pictures of ones they have done for help along the way. I know I will need a adapter to use the factory pulley and I don't want to destroy any of the sheetmetal since it is in good shape. I will keep you posted as I go along and eventually when I get the hh60 back together correctly to re install.

Hey @ohiostate454, as you probably know... :wwp:  

 

when you had the engine apart, did you mic the cylinder bore, or have it machined by chance?  It’s possible you have an STD piston in an oversized bore.  That would lead to the piston skirts allowing the slop at TDC, along with undersized rings not filling the gap properly.

 

as far as the predator swap, take a couple measurements or where the crank center is and try to see if you can duplicate that with the predator with spacers if needed then mount as needed.  

 

But id love to see a restored 656, picked one up with the hh60 (still runs good!) at the big show

Those are the before pictures, don't really have any of it right now lol. I ended up buying a short block of Ebay that "needed rings" because the block that came on the tractor was blasted to bits for the previous owner never putting oil in it. So the flywheel, carb, pulley, etc came from that motor and the piston, rod, crank, etc where from the used block. I honed the cylinder put new rings in it but now I am wondering if I should have went with a whole new piston and rod assembly. New bearings in the block and rebuilt the carb. I want it to be original but my bolens deck needs to be rebuilt bad so I am thinking of using the predator to mow with this and pull trailer for leafs etc the rest of the year.

      The time has come for me to part with my trusty Wheel Horse and find it a new home. I am the second owner (since 2003) and it has always been stored in a garage.
      I am located about 20 minutes south of Rt 80 or 15 minutes north of Rt 78 near Rt 33.
       
      1975 C-120 Special, 8-speed (Model 1-0375, Ser. # 133357). Running (no smoke) 12 hp Tecumseh (Model HH120-120180E, rebuilt 1986). Rebuilt carb, new fuel pump, and new ignition module (in 2006). Good used replacement tank, original tank is included in the sale.  Brand-new battery, fuel filter, and shutoff valve installed 5/26. The transaxle case broke a small piece off (about 1” long by 1/4” wide) on one side of the center flange and was repaired with JB Weld.
      Solid 42” side discharge deck (Model 5-1010) bearings replaced in 2005. Extra set of Gator mulching blades and spare hi-lift blades included. Deck works as it should and is ready to cut.
      42” snow/dozer blade (Model 86-42bc010),  with Rear weights, tire chains and hardware. Blade angles left and right and lifts correctly and is ready to plow.
      Parts: 4 NOS belts and 2 good used belts, NOS taillight lenses, used starter, used ignition module, more (see pic).
      1975 C Series Owner’s manual, 1975 WH accessory catalog, 5-1010 deck manual, original HH-120 manual, updated Tecumseh HH-120 technicians handbook.

      Engine mount for 6.5 hp predator engine on a 657

      Thoughts and opinions on how to mount a Predator engine on a wheel horse 657, was kinda hoping the mounting bracket would work from the previous engine which apparently looks like a Tecumseh h50 with a Craftsman part number so who knows where it came from... so do I just buy a universal plate from amazon or ebay and drill some holes, find some metal and make one, dunno if anyone has bothered to go thru this already and had a good suggestion or anything I should know about... Thx

      I was just given a harbour freight 6.5hp predator engine. It started on second pull and seems to run fine. Im thinking of doing some experiments on it. I may buy some of the performance parts for it.  Have any of you had any luck with aftermarket parts for these little engines?

      The generosity of some of our members never ceases to amaze me.
       
      This here is another 1974 C160, but with the rare Tecumseh HH/OH160 OHV engine. Made one year only.
       
      It's rough. Very much in need of a full disassembly and restoration.
       
      When it came here it was missing one tie rod and the other was broken off one end.
      Today I popped used tie rods on and Trina used her 867 to drag it from the drive to the shed.
       
      The engine wouldn't move.
      Tin was near chock full of skeletal mouseseses and their house.
      Cleaned that out and the engine spins freely now.
       
      So progress has been made.
       
      It'll be a good long while before we get to this one but I just couldn't turn it down considering the rarity.
