Engine mount for 6.5 hp predator engine on a 657

Recommended Posts

Schmendrickthemagnificent

Thoughts and opinions on how to mount a Predator engine on a wheel horse 657, was kinda hoping the mounting bracket would work from the previous engine which apparently looks like a Tecumseh h50 with a Craftsman part number so who knows where it came from... so do I just buy a universal plate from amazon or ebay and drill some holes, find some metal and make one, dunno if anyone has bothered to go thru this already and had a good suggestion or anything I should know about... Thx

I just bolt the engine directly to the frame.

That is if the shaft height matches to the previous engine.

Should be a very easy swap

I just bolted it  to the frame with a spacer plate to get the engine pulley as close to the original position as possible.  I upsized the engine pulley for a little bit more speed so I had to modify an old belt cover that I had laying around just a little bit to make the opening near the engine pulley fit properly.  This was a roller when I got the tractor so I actually used the original belt guard to help dictate placement of the engine.C6261C03-CE6E-449C-AF1E-8F97AAD3369C.jpeg.b71a2896f74c205a6e23535882554dfd.jpegBE291D77-BFB2-426E-88B5-C9E4CD1B87BB.jpeg.f7f82902ddca2e49ce8add35ef657724.jpeg

Here’s how I mounted two of my predator repowers… used the w section sign post to get pulley at same elevation as original. Bolted right on after that.

I have never seen one of those predator engines in person. Didn't know they where that small.

Never used one on a Wheel Horse but I put one in my 655 Lambert project. I just positioned it to where I got the best fit. Drilled new holes and bolted it down.

PRECISELY what I have done in the past.

Trying this with a big HOZZ of a 457 makes it difficult.

Well, any 212 base is small. Then when you remove all the air filter crap, muffler, etc... it makes it THAT much smaller.

Here is a 212R that was originally on my L-157:

Compared to the 457:

All of those are really old pictures, but you can tell there is a MAJOR DIFFERENCE!!!

When I did mine the hood was a bit of a problem as well. I was able to spread the inside of the front of the hood/grill enough that everything fit without having to do any cutting or major modifications. It’s tight but it’s not really even noticeable that I had to spread the hood unless you’re really looking close. E3D51F89-6B3F-4EA0-B725-23E905216781.jpeg.229e8a2f489a4c4425158ba1c8b967e5.jpegF49E60FC-25A7-47F2-B8A9-3C2BB7986FED.jpeg.e447834c75633d3e3303d4bc234ef405.jpeg

If you so choose, you can remove that airbox and go with an aftermarket filter... which helps the hood fit...

Also, if you remove the top of the filter housing, it should clear the hood. (You can leave the filter housing top removed indefinitely).

I never thought about spreading the hood! What an idea!  :banana-dance:

It didn’t take much and I figured I could always put it back like it was originally if I ever went back to an original engine.

Thoughts about moving engine back to fit into hood, but then I’ll have to cut down belt guard and put a smaller sized belt…. I tried pushing/spreading hood but would have to do too much and would look silly or crack more

I realize it's too late now but maybe it can help the next guy.

The engine needs to be set on the right side edge of the frame rail, yous is positioned way to far to the left. The problem was the drive pulley spacing from the engine block on the shaft. That pulley needs to be deeper on to the shaft and positioned right next to the engine block. Maybe 1/16-1/8" of space. And then the engine block slid over to the edge of the frame on that same pulley side. That's how every Wheel Horse HZ engine tractor is set up no matter what kind of engine it is.

Look at the 606 pics above. A 606 and 657 are basically the same tractor so that engine should've fit without cutting the hood.

I think I'll be able to mount some rear view mirrors onto my GT14 dashboard housing. I can  see that it's cast, but I don't know if it's steel or iron. Has anyone tried to drill into the the dash housing? Was it drillable? Thanks for help.

I was just given a harbour freight 6.5hp predator engine. It started on second pull and seems to run fine. Im thinking of doing some experiments on it. I may buy some of the performance parts for it.  Have any of you had any luck with aftermarket parts for these little engines?

Seeking guidance for tuning a CH18S Kohler Command (1995), as replacement for a 16hp Onan (1990).

This Kohler doesn't have the torque-grunt of this Onan, but it works, and is my available option.

So, how best to tune the Kohler for this application?

      1. I believe Onan and Kohler high RPM setting are both 3600?

      2. Would it hurt the Kohler to boost that RPM to 3700-3800?   Would it really help any?

      3. Would it hurt the Hydro Transmission to go over 3600rpm?

      4.  I guess I could go find a slightly smaller Drive Pulley?  And what would then happen to the Trans if I can't get the proper RPMs to the Trans?

Now that I've figured out the mounting arrangements I can always swap in a bigger engine should I stumble upon a better option.

Given the difficulties of getting the Onan rebuilt now-a-days, I'm looking to go for a more modern engine with easier to find parts/service.  And I'm not inclined to do an engine rebuild myself.

      Thanks,
      - L.

So I have been working on a 656 I picked up at the end of last year and I did my first ever motor rebuild by my self on it. However it seems that I have lots of play in the piston and some slop at TDC more then I should have. So to finish the year mowing I am thinking of doing a predator swap while I go over the engine again. I am sure several people have done this before and I have a spare mounting plat to make it work. I am wondering if anyone has any pictures of ones they have done for help along the way. I know I will need a adapter to use the factory pulley and I don't want to destroy any of the sheetmetal since it is in good shape. I will keep you posted as I go along and eventually when I get the hh60 back together correctly to re install.

This is my first born custom and is still under construction. Only one of the hoods, gutted frame, seat tray and seat are from my recently acquired 551 Suburban. A newer 3 speed transaxle and belt guard will round out the remaining Wheel Horse parts. The front axle is flipped and moved forward 6 inches. Its origin along with the tie rods and steering column comes from a 102 Cub Cadet. Taking 2 steps back for every advance is part of the fun. But now I'm at a loss and overwhelmed at all the V drive pulleys available at Phoenix pulleys. Can anyone suggest what pulley I should use with the 13 hp Predator? Thanks in advance
