My honey spent a bunch of time cleaning and cleaning and cleaning.

IMG_20180618_142058013.jpg.80285104df7b60a823437f7d566da72e.jpg

I got another set screw put into the hubs.

We've hit a snag on the transmission that I hope can be repaired.

I've posted in the transmission section as well.

There's a bad wheel bearing so I'll need to split the case and where that bearing sits the case has a chip missing.

Edit. The guys in the other thread say that this is probably just a piece of the bearing missing. I'll split the case and see what happens.

IMG_20180618_135223560.jpg.23b1335727a21868bb9a43b13a1d0336.jpg

If not I'll swap an 8 speed in to my B and she'll use the 4 I take out.

One thing I like to use when I have to do some heavy de-greasing (especially with chemicals) are those disposable Nitrile gloves... they're thin enough that you can feel what you're doing but keep a whole lot of crud off your hands. only drawback is if it's warm, like yesterday when I was using them, your hands get pretty sweaty

I've actually used them to keep my hands warm working outside when it's cold  ;)

The 657 came with a liftable sleeve hitch on it. Well frozen into place by rust of course.

We're not going to be reinstalling the lift mechanism which was only partially there anyway. Cable was actually looped all the way around the transmission for some silly reason.

So I took a few minutes over the last couple days with heat and hammer and rust penetrant and patience and got the pin out of the transmission.

Here's some before and after pictures of the hitch that used to be on my c-160 when I got it. Note the strange tab hanging straight down below the transmission. No idea why that was there. This is clearly some kind of homemade or company made hitch. It resembles a Wheelhorse hitch but the angles don't match up and the holes are a little off center.

When I put that hitch on the 657, the back of the hitch actually was smashing up against the drain plug for the transmission.

I knew I needed to cut off the huge vertical tab so I just took an extra half inch off to compensate for improper positioning.

Me and a Sawzall and a grinder and an hour or more and it was taken care of.

It's now all primed up and ready to be painted.

I took out the differential and discovered that the wheel bearing in the other side was also in very poor condition.

Spent quite a bit of time today cleaning up the case half that was off and degreasing and depainting and derusting and priming it.

Also obviously had to take out every single nut and bolt and washer and lock washer and wire brush all of those.

Very time-consuming work but I really do enjoy doing this.

@stevasaurus, I can see why you enjoy tinkering on Transmissions.

Emptied all the gears out of the shallow half of the transmission and all the other bearings looked great!

I didn't even lose my hoobie doobie balls.

:ROTF:

My honey spent some time tonight finishing up cleaning the hood and then priming the top surface of that. The case half that is white in the above pictures is now red.

Couple of other small pieces got primed or painted tonight. Little plates. Pulleys. Stuff like that.

So for tonight's festivities my Honey wire brushed the toolbox area / seat base.

Then she primed that and also put a coat on the inside of the hood and a second coat on the trailer hitch.

I wire brushed a whole bunch of bolts and then did a wash-out and threw a gasket or two in the carburetor.

to Kohler, WI.

You guys are making great progress and I love seeing that thing coming together.

Josh, we're getting down to the wire and don't have much green crap paint to remove. The belt guard is the last big piece. There are several other smaller pieces that have some splashes of it left such as the front axle and some brackets.

As far as Parts go, the only thing I know of that we need to yet procure is a couple of exhaust pipes. Maybe a gasket or two.

My show tractors for October Festivals.
RJ59, 1045, 657 w/sickle bar, 10HP and D200. Just love the attention and hearing the stories of grandpa or growing up had one. Always can see the joy these Horses bring to the spectators. Than telling them the WH history story along with Speedex story always intrigues them.
Than of course there is always someone that needs to get one out of the way.
Last year it was the 1045 and the PO was so excited to learn I got her running and been mowing my grass all summer. Of course I had to let him drive her around.
      This year it’s a 702 I think I getting this week.
So many were engrossed by the Sickle Bar never knowing such was available on garden tractors.

If you read the restoration thread you'll see that one of my recent posts involves me snapping off the end of the crankshaft during an attempted repair.
You'll also see about a Briggs & Stratton engine  I'm going to use.

What I'm looking for in this thread is if anyone has ever put an older style Briggs & Stratton in place of a Tecumseh or even a Kohler....

What are the things I need to watch for?

I'm accustomed to using Non detergent oil in all older small engines.
Thanks to @pfrederi I have the manual for the Tecumseh and it says to use detergent oil BUT it is printed in 1998... Over 30 years after DOM on my engine.

      What do you folks use??

      I've ordered this set

      https://www.redoyourhorse.com/tecumseh-4-pc-engine-decal-set/

from our awesome vendor Terry @Vinylguy.

I know where the balloon sticker goes and the oil sticker.

Where does the large "Solid State" one belong??

      Thanks!!
