Blade PTO not engaging

Recommended Posts

groffster99

Hey All. I have a 520xi that I bought a couple months ago. I have used it to mow my 4 acres about 7 time with no problems. Yesterday I was about 40 mins into mowing when I disengage my blades to remove a toy that I missed during cleanup from my path. I never shut the mower off, rather I just stopped the blades and throttled back the engine. When I got back on the PTO for the blades wouldn't engage. The light comes on that signals the PTO is engaged but the blades don't spin up. I played with all the controls and pedals and wiggled everything and it finally worked, but not by anything that I could think of. I was merely beating things out of frustration. I finished mowing what I needed to and parked the tractor.  Today, I went to finish mowing and and got 1/2 of what I needed done when I had to moved something. Again, I shut the blades down and the same thing happened, only this time I have not been able to get the blades to start back up yet.  Just like last time the Blade PTO light comes on, but the blades don't engage. I'm going to be calling the dealer where I purchased it first thing in the morning, but don't know of the help I will get since it was used. Anyone have any idea what might be going on? I'm feeling really frustrated.

:WRS:  Check all of the wiring connections to the switch and the clutch itself, sounds like one isn't tight enough.

I'm trying to remember if the PTO light stays on in reverse. I know the blades won't turn unless you hit the override switch

Is it possible the reverse switch is bad/out of adjustment, or even that your heel is on the reverse pedal?

WNYPC, The light does stay on mine when I'm in reverse.  I have tried to engage it while I'm moving forward and its not working either.  I'm a little behind on my tinkering with it today because I forgot about my kids ball game. Also have to install a hitch receiver on my wife's vehicle so the mower is taking a back seat till this afternoon, when I will have some uninterrupted time to tear into it. Thanks for the advice. I'll try an let everyone know in a timely fashion what I'm finding.

I was hoping it was something simple. Good luck with the receiver, I just put one on my truck. Next time I'll gladly give Uhaul the $100 or so they wanted to do it.

I told my wife it's only 4 bolts I'm not paying someone to do that.

After i I was done I told her if she ever heard me say that again to smack me

The more you pay for the hitch, the easier the install..... usually! :)

Spent all day working with my loader yesterday.  Got lots of experience turning PTO on off and getting off the seat.  The PTO reverse switch will not work unless you turn it with the tractor stopped as I recall.  The  tractor will not start unless the PTO switch is off and the seat interlock is working.  Since you say the tractor starts, I would suspect one of the kill relays is faulty or has a bad connection.  There are three of them on the firewall, all identical.  You can switch them around or simply remove and reinsert.  The fact that the light is on may not mean anything, my battery charge light is on all the time and I know it is charging.  The PTO clutch could be intermittent.  Check the connector.  Get the demystification guide in the manuals section.  It will break down each of the major circuits-a must when working on this complicated machine.

Sorry, this took so long for a reply, but my part was on back order at the dealer, and I just to it installed and tested to verify that it was the problem. It was the switch that was faulty. Installed he new one and everything seems to be working.

My daughter was using the Wheel Horse rider to mow, I was push mowing.  She drives over to me and says, "Dad, the blades aren't turning." I look at the mower, she's got the blades engaged (lever forward) but nothing is moving.  I disengage the blades, and re-engage... nothing.  No movement from the belt nor clutch.  Then I notice the smell, and look closer, the belt is so hot is melting on the clutch.  Or rather, the clutch is so hot it's melting the belt.  Melting occurred.

While the clutch is disengaged, I can spin the clutch freely; and whilst it's engaged, it won't move.

So, what did I do now?  Peter told me to lube that needle bearing, but I couldn't find a write up/how to anywhere, so I was putting it off until after the leaves were done falling in the Fall.  I haven't taken anything off yet, other than the pins that hold the pinion and such, and the little brake pad.  I see there are two snap rings, assume they come off, and then the assembly slides out as a whole?

Some pictures of the clutch, can anyone tell if it's usable from them?

My 1999 270H with 48” deck is having an issue getting power to PTO.   Checked PTO with jumper to battery and it worked fine and I’ve actually been cutting grass using the jumper for awhile.  I checked power from PTO switch to PTO and there is none.  I checked PTO switch and it appeared OK but I replaced it anyway and still no power to PTO.   Then checked brown/tan wire leading to switch and there is none.   Could the issue be the NMIR module and is there a good way to check it.  If bad, where is the best place to get a replacement and do other brands/models have NMIR a modules I can use.    Also, would suppling battery power directly to PTO switch and bypassing NMIR result in switch working.

Need some help. My 800 Special has an electric PTO. It is not working. Checked Ohms - nothing. My questions are 1) how does the PTO come off and 2) can they be rebuilt? I took the bolt out that I thought holds it on but no luck. Must be something more?

What direction does the front PTO Pulley turn on a wheel horse D180 with a Kohler K482 as you face the front of the tractor?

I want to get a hydraulic pump for a Johnson 10 loader I will be mounting to tractor and want to make sure I get a pump that rotates the correct direction.

      Hi All,

My first post on here so apologies in advance for any rookie mistakes.

First off, I am the proud owner of a "new to me" 312-8. I took it out for a spin yesterday and when I engaged the PTO, currently there is a 42 in side discharge mower deck on it, there were sparks flying from the disk directly below the muffler (maybe the flywheel or clutch?). Any idea what that may be and what needs to be addressed?

      Thank you !!
