GT-14 piston to piston/hydrogear

Recommended Posts

My one GT-14 with a piston to piston Sundstrand has a cracked transaxle case. I have a parts GT-14 with a hydrogear unknown condition. I would like to put it in the piston to piston tractor. Would it make better sense to put the whole unit in not knowing the condition of it or to put the transaxle from the hydrogear on the piston to piston tranny? Will a piston to piston tranny bolt up to a hydrogear transaxle?

@daveoman1966 will probably be your most reliable source on P to P swap to H-Gear.  With just a little more work you could go with an Eaton 1100. If you have a three point hitch being operated by the tractor lift cylinder it is a bit more work but very doable. I have pictures of mi Eaton swap and @19richie66 has done this too.

No three point on this one. Just did a swap from H-gear to P to P on a c-160 with a transplanted 10 hp K series. Swapped the whole unit and it was pretty much a direct fit. Got a 12 hp k series I'm getting ready to put in the C-160. Would love a 16 hp but they seem to be scarce unless your name is Eric and you live in Maine, right @ebinmaine  :ychain:

The piston to piston hydro pump and motor will bolt up to the hydro gear transaxke how ever where did the current piston to piston unit come from was it a total swap hydro pump motor and transaxle..   I suspect you will have problem, the hydro gear transaxles for GT 14s have a different input gearing than non GT 14 units.  There is a thread here about swapping out the input gears  but it was to change the motor not the transaxle.  I assume you could swap out the gears n the transaxle to match your piston to piston motor

@pfrederi Both piston to piston and hydrogear units come from a GT-14 so then it should bolt right up? Maybe I'll hook up an engine to the parts machine and see if the whole unit works :eusa-think:

I am not a GT-14 Expert but looking at various references all GT-14s  1968-1972 came with the same hydro unit 90-2062 which was a hydro gear.  If there was a GT14 that had a piston to piston I would guess someone swapped units at some point in its past. I guess if it worked on an different GT 14 it would work on yours.

Edit

I would guess some one swapped the axles from a GT14 into a piston to piston system from a later model then put on the GT14 you have.  I do not believe WH used Piston to piston hydros until 1975

The input gear in a GT14 transaxle is 35 Teeth  a regular WH transaxle for all other hydro wss 33 teeth

Even if the piston to piston unit just had the axles from the GT-14 swapped it would work well. It would run a bit faster (about 20% faster) having 28 inch tall tires rather than 23 inchers, and it would have a bit less power (about 82%) transferred to the ground. All depends on what you plan to do with it.

That explains why I have several others that are all H-gear.
