8 Speed Transmission Case to 6 Speed??

Is it offset for more room for the limited slip?

Nope. The Limited Slip Differential doesn't occupy any more real estate in the case than an 8 pinion.

The gears are located on different shafts leading up to the main bull gear.

That different arrangement needs the LSD diff to be offset to one side.

Would this just be a difference on the inside of the housing or would the left axel be visibly longer from the outside?

Inside only.

The axles appear even on the outside.  I think 🤔....

I was just wondering because the 6 speed that I got from racinbob today, the left axle is longer. It doesn't bother me. And talking to my dad just now, if the axle was perchance put in backwards, would it mess things up?

Now you have me curious. There was no reason for me to pull the differential and I didn't notice the difference. I would have thought they would be equal externally. :eusa-think:

I think you are asking if the 5060 case's brake tab is in the same place as the for 8-speeds. It cannot be.

It appears to my eyecrometer that the brake tab is virtually identical in placement.

Note my phrasing.

@oliver2-44

I have no tools or skills to accurately measure the tiny variances between the two.

With a straight ruler and half guessing on an angle guage I'd say they're extremely close.

Here the 6 speed is on top.

See that the brake shaft hole is between the band mount and axle.

(Disregard the extra open bearing hole where I borrowed one for another transmission.)

On the 8 speed the brake shaft hole is below the band mount.

I figure the reversed rotation makes sense given that the brakes  would be on different shafts.

The brake bands would be pulling opposite directions and from different shaped linkages.

These next two show each case from the ends.

I'd be happy to try more measurements given better instruction and provided I have the tools.

IMHO this is still  "Try at your own risk"  but I'd be comfortable with an attempt if it was my own.

Well when dad was going the the thread you made about it, the axles were like that before you tore into it so it wasn't your error.

Thanks @ebinmaine  close enough for me to give it a try.

Howard, would you post the dimensions how far each side is sticking out. That might help determine what's going on. I suspect that the left and right were switched. I just talked to the guy I got it from and it was gone through (not by him) but it was many years ago. Obviously it won't hurt anything but it would bug the heck out of me. It wouldn't take all that much to open it back up to switch them if that's the case. I wish I would have noticed when I had it open.

@stevasaurus Do you have the axle lengths for the 5060? I can't find them. Here's the picture of the transmission. Note how much further the left side sticks out. I'm thinking they are reversed. What do you think?

Howard, I don't use goop on the gasket so it would likely come apart quite easily.

No wa I’m a tranny expert, but I’d measure from the middle (the seat/fender bolts) to understand the difference. It might not be an accidental swap, it might be one is from a different transaxle.

I might have to tear it apart before I put it in then, it doesn't bother me too much as I could just move the hub over to get the tires in the same spot of the fender but it was just a thing that sparked a point of interest but it would be interesting to see if the diff is just flipped or like @Handy Don said the axels are from different trannys.

Whoa guys...here is the video.  Axles are 11 1/4" and 12".  The axles butt up against each other in the build, so if you can measure the distance between the end of the 2 axles while in the case, you will have 23 14".  If you have that, the differential needs to be turned around.  If you have anything else, one or both of those axles is incorrect.  With the 8 pinion differentials, the axles are the same length...always.  They can have different lengths, but the lengths are equal...that is 12" axles, 14"axles, etc.  All the Limited Slip trans have one axle 11 1/4" and one axle 12".  That 3/4" difference is what makes your 11/44 mushroom gear have a longer cut of teeth in the 11 part of the gear, and why it is off set.  :occasion-xmas:  The bull gear is wider in the LS trans then in the 8 pinion differentials.

There you have it Howard. Swap the axles. There's a right end cap and a left end cap so they have to oriented properly. The service manual specifically states that the nuts holding things together be on the side of the longer end cap. That will put the longer axle on the right side and things will even out. Right now the longer axle is on the left. They are the correct axles for the transmission.

It's not a big project to correct it but it sure would have been even easier to do when I had it apart. :eusa-doh:

Yeah, but now we also get to see the inside workings in real life and we get to learn some more knowledge.

I have a small box of spares that IIRC were from a 6.

Would you happen to have the axles for a six speed? We tore into the tranny from @Racinbob today and whoever went through it before him put 11 5/8 axles in boths sides wiith I presume are either from an 8 speed or 3 speed

No spares here.

You may be able to leave one of your existing axles in place and get a better match for the opposite side.

You could place an ad in the Redsquare classifieds.

Or one of our vendors likely would have them.
