I took off the drive belt today and brought it to Tractor Supply, measured it there and it was 1/2” x 81”. It’s old and stretched out so I bought an 80”. It went on fine but the tractor isn’t shifting into gear properly. Looking here and on the web, it seems the correct part number is 7473 and the size is 5/8”x82”. Is that correct? Maybe the PO had used the wrong size?

Having a hard time justifying $300 to rebuild the spindles and replace pulleys on my deck. The deck is a (i believe) 05-36MS01 on my 1982 C85. I found these kits on Pat's and was wondering if anyone had tried to adapt them to a deck like mine? Thanks

New member ...and another old-Iron guy here...with my 1st Wheel Horse tractor. I was looking for something mainly for pulling an old aluminum boat (18' starcraft) around the property. Capability to mow and haul yard waste would be a bonus. 2 weeks ago, a C85 showed-up on CL for a song. He couldn't start it for me and it didn't take me long to figure out why... This will be a running thread / rolling-restoration as I bring her back to her original, Black-Hood glory! (DISCLAIMER: I'm an engine-wrencher ...I have the tendency to leave my foot off of the project's gas when the engine starts drinking it!)

My tractor wouldn't start. So i jump sarted it with my van. I attached cables jumped on tractor and started right up. I detached cables put c85 in gear and a minute later backfires and quits. Checked oil gear oil gas all good. Battery reads 10.8 voltz. repeated this process 4 times to drive c85 back to my garage. Anyone had this before. Oh and its a new battery last year. I looked for a short or loose connection and didn't find anything???

Started another project this fall, I decided to install a 10 HP Chinese Diesel in a rescued C85. I worked a good price from Carroll Stream this spring on an engine and when I picked up the C85 in WV, I thought that would make a good fit. And like everything else I do, it got a little carried away! Frist thought was making a worker, now slowly turning into a show pony. The C85 black hood worked well because of the vast room under the hood. I made up threaded mounting blocks from 3/8†bar stock for mounting the engine. The engine was too close to the top of the hood to allow the compression release to rotate; I made a new hood hinge and raised the hood 3/4â€. A small teak on the side of the hood using a bar clamp and that made enough room to clear the air cleaner. Then came new paint, tires, a stack, (with chrome tip), a sleeve hitch and much more. It is now about 90% now. Hope to be done next month; I will shoot more pics when completed. Thanks for looking. Joe
