TJ5208 1,841 #1 Posted February 12, 2022 (edited) Okay i seen a video @Pullstart made about tire widths the thinner ones worked better. So why do pullers use wide tires which one gives you more traction wide or thin? The reason I ask is because I haul a alout of loads and I want to be able to pull dead weight what do you guys recommend? I think fluid in them would help a lot with either one but the wider ones you can put more fluid in which in trade gives more weight. roadapples 6,983 #3 Posted February 12, 2022 Narrow tires are better in snow. But with weight and chains it shouldn't matter...

There is a line of thinking that a thinner tire will cut down through snow easier to get to solid ground. I can see the logic there. I don't ever try to cut DOWN THROUGH the snow. If I'm on a tractor it's because I'm pushing the snow out of the way and most of it is already gone by the time it gets to the back tires so I went with, heavier the better. I run 10.5" wide tires all year long because that was how I could get the most fluid to get the most weight.
SylvanLakeWH 28,537 #5 Posted February 12, 2022 It all depends on what you are doing and on what surface… Running ags on my concrete driveway to plow snow or pull my train full of kids around the neighborhood on paved streets, which is what I do with my horses, makes no sense. I use turfs. If you’re in dirt or grass with heavy loads go with ags. If you’re on pavement like me, go with turfs… 6

squonk 43,918 #8 Posted February 12, 2022 I have 6-12's on my 857. Good old General Garden Tractor S.S's. 40 lbs of weight on each wheel. I've been plowing snow with no chains.
TJ5208 1,841 #9 Posted February 13, 2022 Either one of these is what I'm probably going to do. The 24s look aggressiverer than the 23s.

Sparky-(Admin) 23,263 #14 Posted February 13, 2022 Between the two I would choose the 4 ply tires over the 8 ply. In my opinion the 8 ply is to stiff and non-flexible for our type of machines. 1

So why do pullers use wide tires which one gives you more traction wide or thin? Traction is affected by contact area and weight. The surface has a great deal to do with it as well, obviously. Pullers operate on a soft surface. Wide tires float on softer terrain, but will slip if the tractor isn't heavy enough. For most residential use, narrow ags grip great. But once they slip, they dig a hole pretty quick. Wider tires float more, but slip sooner for a given weight. In other words, wider ags slip sooner than narrow ones on a garden tractor unless additional weight is added. Short of ice and snow, just about any aggressive tire is more than sufficient for a 600lb tractor. 23x8.5-12 ags are a very good "middle ground" tire.

Horse Newbie 7,395 #19 Posted February 13, 2022 (edited) @TJ Salyers… I went with the Hi-Run brand, 23x10.50-12 for the 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 that I am refreshing. My main concern was not traction, but looks… I think Ags look cool. Another reason I went with them is price. I ordered 2 online and picked them up at Lowes. Two of them were about $176.80… after taxes $188.73. I wanted tri-ribs for the front, again mainly for looks, but tri-ribs were a little more difficult to find, and more expensive, so I went with straight ribs… Hi-Run 16x6.50-8 I got two at Lowes also, ordered online and picked them up in the store. I think they were $51.85. Around here near NC-SC border, we don’t get much snow so I won’t be pushing a lot of that. If fact I don’t know what I will actually “use” my Ags for other than to make me look cooler driving the Work Horse. Now I know there are guys on this forum that move a LOT of snow, or till a LOT of earth, so they have the experience on that. Sounds like they are suggesting you to use turfs with chains… and add weight. Edited February 13, 2022 by Horse Newbie
Sparky-(Admin) 23,263 #20 Posted February 13, 2022 Are you sure you have the wide rear rims? I’ve looked at pics of your 52O and I’m not completely sure you do. It’s hard to tell in a picture though.
