one of them has some threads on back side that I can possibly work with.

Maybe if you can cut a slot in it for a flathead screwdriver.

You can't drill that one out?

No, it’s got the extractor broke of inside the bolt 😩

How hard is the flywheel to get off? Will I need a puller?

The fact is, I do have a budget. If you ever want to sit down and figure out what a project will cost you, just triple that right off the git-go, and you will be close. Then if you want to go a little nuts after that, ................

Lovely.

Do you have a die grinder @DeepH2O...? Might be able to use a die grinder with a small cobalt grinding bit to basically grind it out...

I always unscrew the flywheel bolt, get it to the end of the threads on the crankshaft, and put a pry bar behind the flywheel, prying with moderate pressure, and hit the flywheel bolt with a hammer.

Flywheel will pop right off... usually...

Edit: ( @pacer and @squonk will probably recommend a harmonic balancer puller, which would work great as well in this instance)

If you lived closer, you could barrow our diamond drill bits

All good advice.I’ve been there.

Always tighten a pinch first and then short sharp blows with your  hand on the wrench.

Hahahaha!! We ARE really all alike, huh!! I was going to go earlier but talked myself out of it. I was going to try one of the bolts one more time, but, in my mind, I’m already lining up jobs to do with the welder!! I’ve been needing to repair my trailer but needed one more reason to get the welder and this was the scale tipper! Haha

Ok, so do you guys see in issue with my setup here, for trying to get flywheel off? Am I correct by assuming the only thing holding it on is 1 bolt in the center?

Found some other posts. I need to re-install center bolt most of the way, and then apply pressure to center bolt to keep from damaging threads and to keep from falling off if it decides to come off quickly.

Does the pointy thing on the screw of your puller come off?  Some do and you then have a flat to push on the bolt head.

If yours doesn't, you might consider punching a center punch as close to the center of the bolt head as possible to prevent it from 'walking' off center.

Just so your aware the aluminum plate behind the flywheel has the charging stator bolted to it with 4 little screws. They may be rust welded in place like the others. If I’m remembering correctly the stator has to come off to get to the plate puller holes. Sometimes you can wiggle the plate off without using a puller. That aluminum plate is also the crankshaft bearing retainer for that side of the engine. It has paper gasket shins under it to set the crankshaft side clearance. To reassemble you will need to pull the oil pan to feeler gage side clearance. This can take a couple of tries. Do you have a Kohler engine Manuel?

If there is an old welding and farm repair shop in your area you might want to take it by them and see if they can get the bolts out before you go that deep in the engine.

Also the flywheel is bolted on to a taper. You want to put tension on you puller then smack the puller center bolt with a hammer. You usually cannot pull the flywheel with just cranking on the center bolt. Put that center bolt back in place because it usually jumps off  when you smack it

I think once you get your bearing plate off, the broken bolts can be dealt with. If the one with the broken tap NEVER comes out, there are options.

Wish we had good pics of the broken bolts and locations

Here they are. I got the flywheel off and access to the back of one of them. Still no luck! She’s in there. I lubricated good, applied heat, and got a good bite with chisel. Still didn’t wink. I’m not even sure welding nut will get it.

So, there’s 2 covers that these 3 go to. The one in top head, I have a new head coming. That one is good. The other 2, not so sure.

I think the head bolt would come out,l but you need to center tap and drill it pretty close. Even if you had to drill and tap it to 5/16. I am assuming the top bolt has the easy out broke off in it,  but I cant really tell. Any decent machine shop could get both of them out I think. Re- tap to 5/16. If that fails cut the bosses off, cut new pieces of aluminum, (any shape) and have them welded back on. Drill and tap new holes while the cover is in place. 1454374682_topbrokebolt2.jpg.85312e70ef1752af43f245bb4e218d15.jpg1653399454_bottombrokebolt2.jpg.f24ce45d60a547a3dd00792f38b3d19f.jpgOr send the bearing plate and head to me, and I will fix them. No charge.

If you heat the broken easy out to red hot it will not be hardened an longer and can be drilled out.

Do I risk damaging the gasket or anything else in motor with heating?

If I remove bearing plate, I’m assuming I would need to replace gaskets, right?

Correct. They are actually paper shims that set the crankshaft endplay.
