I’ve wanted o do something similar for a LONG time!  Off road buggy style.  FWD transaxle turned sideways and used as a transfer case.  It would add a lot of gear reduction…

yep.  Or leave ‘em open to make an “all wheel drive” modeled transfer case.

I'd lock'm for off road. If a front tire slips it won't be sending power to the rears. Correct?

kind of,  you’d need both fronts slipping to loose all power.

I was picturing a diff used in the front and rear axles too

Yes.  I can’t imagine a situation where the entire front diff has no grip, or the entire rear.  So, the center power transmitter could potentially be “open” and not locked.  It would be easiest on the entire drivetrain if it were open in the center.

This is what I was imagining. Say the whole thing is driven into deep slippery mud. Guessing about the possibility of only one tire getting power because of the diff slip.

Locking the transfer diff would put power to both front and rear but if it's open it has the potential to power only 1 tire.

Hope Oldskool doesn't mind us going off road on his thread

Somewhere I have seen a Wheel Horse with an 8speed turned 90degree as a transfer case to run 2 Jeep axles.

Yeah @wallfish I could see that.  I think through all the power transmission, that is easier said than done.  BUT there’s only one way to find out!

Maximum Input Speed .......................... 3000 RPM

Reduction Ratio ................... 26.97:1

So at 3000 RPM input, the output speed is 3000 ÷ 26.97 = 111.23 rpm

I used this calculator to get the maximum output horsepower as 4.6 (regardless of input horsepower).

This means that this transmission can maximally apply 4.6 horsepower for motion, assuming no losses in the rest of the drive train.

 

I'd say this is borderline for driving a 1,000 lb vehicle at 20+ mph, depending a lot on the terrain and the surface being driven over.

Thanks Don for the calculations. Plus I guess there is the gear ratio of the sprockets along with the rear diff ratio turning  the 25to27in tires.

In the end, with the engine at 3000, you get 4.6 hp to work with. It is helpful that with a hydro, you can always have the full input revs available but the starting torque coming out will be lower at starting speed. It's a compromise between being able to start from a stop and reaching max speed since available torque is related to the hydro's output rotation speed (i.e. you don't get full torque at low output speeds).

 

Gearing to get up to 6-10 mph (i.e. chain sprockets to the drive shaft, the rear end differential, plus tire circumference) would probably work pretty well unless it's really muddy or hilly.

Gearing to get to 20 means maybe having not enough "ooomph" at low, starting off speeds.

 

A heavier hydro might be the ticket or, failing that, I'd give some thought to a torque converter a la snowmobiles or go-karts run through a geared transmission. You get no-clutch operation, speed ranges, and reverse. Heck, the front end from a compact, stick shift, front-wheel drive car (Ford Fiesta?) would even get you steering!

I'm a little surprised those transmissions are that low of an output. 217 ft pounds I was thinking hydraulic stuff would have a little more torque

I have seen a transmission turned sideways and used to drive a transmission by chain off the brake shaft.

It’s very impressive. It gave me a similar idea but with a hydro and a three speed powerking transmission. If the measurements work out. 👍

      I started a thread a little while back "Something from Nothing". It has been upgraded to this thread because now I'm building something from something lol. I started with a new frame and strengthened the transaxle mount a bit.

      I've wanted to do this type of project for a while now. So here we go. The name was given by @wallfish. It will be called "The Yeti".  It will be painted and badged in a military theme. The front axle is in progress now.
