Steering Fan Gear

Recommended Posts

WHX??

So the other day EB @ebinmaine posts a wanted ad for a fan gear for an 856. The one he is doing military theme.

So I pm him calls him a goomer and he shoulda just insulted me first as he knows I am a bit heavy on mid sixties parts.

So I blaze a bath in the parts shed. I found one...or three... or a half dozen...:)

So I ask him what happened to the old one ... outside teeth broke off he says and shows me this.

So in looking at the one for a short frame I think will work I find this.

So I says WTF looks like they were made that way?? So I march out to the horse barn scrape away some grease  and find this on my 856.

Now he says one fer sure is broke off but I think he might be on crack.... they were cast this way.

Thoughts fellas?

Just guessing but I think they did that on purpose. When you turn the wheel if the end ones mesh then when you try to turn the other way the gears aren’t lined up. It stops you from over steering, now that I think about it though I remember the stops on the axles. My 520 and 607 both have those I believe.

Seems obvious to me that there is a tooth missing. On Eric's there is a broken, jagged gap between another tooth and the "flat" tooth you're seeing on your gears.

All I know is that I need the other gear. The small round one on the end of the shift. @Shynontold me he had one. Can't you count the teeth on those fan gears? If it isn't broke off they should have the same amount correct?

Alright fellas, here is the verdict from the grand 607 jury.

No broken teeth, I know the pictures are showing a lot of grease but I wiped it up with a paper towel and could feel the full teeth on either side.

I can send one but it's gonna look just like the one you got. I would need the length of the shaft  tho if you want the whole assembly as they all seem to have the triangle welded on at different points. IPL shows as the whole assembly.

Super cool Mr Jim. Thanks.

It's tough to see the one on Trina's tractor because we don't have it at the right angle. If you look at the picture that I doctored with the black square you can see where there's a nub on the outside I put ONE DOT on. Right next to it there's an actual tooth that I put TWO DOTS on.

We have the nub on the outside which is I believe, what you're looking at. What we don't have is that tooth. There's one entire tooth missing off of one side of her gear.

I'll get a length for you and send you a PM at some point.

The gears are not meshing right. You need to find what is causing it. Could be the fan gear needs shiming or the hole in the steering block is worn or both. The steering shaft could be worn too.

Yes sir. Agreed. Trina and I were looking at that last night.

She knows it has the right amount of shims in it.

She slapped the whole tractor together in kind of a hurry just to make it so it would run and drive for the show and neither one of us remembers if the pillow block or the shafts were worn.

She can take a closer look at all that stuff once we get a couple more new parts.

???  at 55 years old some "wiggle" is to be expected.  But, yes there is a small amount of movement but not much.

Wait a minute...which shaft are we trying to "wiggle"  I am sooooo confused:blink:

The shaft from the steering wheel. If the block on the frame has a wallowed out hole, the small gear moves away from the fan gear and ruins the teeth or skips .

How does one find a vise that keeps an angle like that?

The scrap pile out back of my HVAC shop.!!! Still can't believe someone was tossing it. The lead screw is abit bent so doesn't close all the way but still very usable. The flat vise right behind it was with it.
