LED Power Supply Electrical Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Zeek

I need to power the sign in the picture below. It has 37 of the pictured LED light pods wired together. Each one is marked "POS" at one end and "NEG" at other (tab missing in pic). Two blue/yellow wires in one side, two blue/yellow wires out other side. I tried researching the numbers but was unable to come up with what I need. I know there are electrical geniuses on here that may know what I need. That's a golf cart right behind the sign so you get and idea on size. I know I can try calling the number, but that's a big corp so I'd like to avoid that. Any advice on what to use?

As in, what to power them with ?  Is that what you need to know?

This looks to me to be a 'hijacked' website:

If you drop the hyphen from the domain name, i.e.  www.usled.com  you get what looks to be a legit website but I don't know if it's the same company or not.  It might be. [edit: it IS, same phone number as on the modules]

I think the place to start is to look at the "Channel Letter Lighting" section of the 'good' website.  Even though this may not be the same as what you have, it's bound to be very similar and a good place to start.

https://www.usled.com/channel-letter

There are downloadable PDFs with specs and installation that should give at least some general ideas of what you've got there.

Where are the rest of the letters?  or do you only have the ' e ' ?

I just emailed them on your behalf and will let you know what or if I get back from them.  The logo on the modules looks like it might be the latter website.  OH... and the phone number IS THE SAME, so they must be the company.

I used my corporate info for a more 'weighty' email, cuz I is a vewy impotent purrson !

Yes sir, like the first sentence says "I need to power the sign in the picture below." I'm aware of all the website things and the correct one  . . . I researched it before I posted. As far as the picture, two wires in the black primary wire. One white goes to positive, one black goes to the negative in the loop. Thank you for sending an email.

@zeek that's the same as the pic I posted!  I was hoping for better resolution.

So what is it that you are looking to learn then?  How much voltage? Current?

What LED power supply is needed. You can't send 120V directly through this to my knowledge.

No, abslutely not.  Based on the products on their site, it's going to be either 12 or 24 VDC.  The current is an unknown.

If I were doing this I would start with a 12 V supply and an ammeter.

I have a couple of LED strings with a 120 to 12v power supply.  These came out of an LED lighted movie poster frame with the led’s daisy chained as yours are. Can you unplug one and apply 12 volts to it?  I’m not an electrical genius but some leds are like around 2-3 volts with a resistor in there to take up the rest of the power with 12v supply if I understand it correctly.

I learned when looking at power supplies it had to be either 12 or 24 volts. I was trying to get around buying one without knowing first. I don't know why it never occurred to me until last week to just put 12 volts to it and see what happens:doh:. I jumped it to a tractor battery yesterday and found 12V works perfect! So I'm just going to order a cheap 12V power supply. My daughter found this at a thrift store when visiting and had to have it (her name is Ericka) so I wanted to clean it up and get it working. I may see if US LED has those replacement modules.

Typical... I never got a reply.  I HAVE been getting marketing email spam from them though.  Go figure.

They don't have the same ones, but the ones they now sell would no doubt be direct replacements.  I would look on ebay first.

Did you measure the current?  That's important if you're shopping for a supply.

13 LED modules

There's three times that many in Zeek's sign.

You shouldn't guess when selecting a supply, Zeek needs to measure the actual current and select a supply with at least a 50% safety margin.

According to US Led, thier 12v-12watt power supply can run up to 22 3 lamp modules and is rated at 1 amp. Their 60watt power supply can run up to 110 modules and is rated for 4.0 amps.

Math isn't adding up, maybe a typo?

60 Watts at 12 Volts is FIVE Amps.

Something wrong with that datasheet.

Look down to the electrical specs.

It says output voltage is 24V at 4 Amps.  Which is 96 Watts, close enough to the 100 Watts they state.

But earlier in the sheet they're saying 12 Volts and 60 Watts which should be 5 Amps.

That sheet looks to be wrong.

@Zeek

I finally got a reply from USLed !

Sent the guy a pic of the module and asked for a data sheet.

Better late than never!

However, if he doesn't send it by next Friday, I won't be able to retrieve it since I'm retiring and will no longer have access to my corporate email !

I did inform the man about the error on the data sheet by the way.

I have led lights in my horse barn, and since then I have static on the radio. Is there a cure for this?
