I use Never seize on everything.

 

The 3 bolts that secure the anvil for the chipper knife are flat head and require an Allen wrench. The problem with that is my hex holes were filled with wood and pitch residue that had turned to concrete. Took for ever to get them cleaned out so a wrench would go completely in.

Just a heads up so you can start soaking and digging them out now.

yeah, mine are real gunked up. the housing around the wheel was full of crud too, took quite a while to get it all scraped out.

 

it looks like the chipper wheel is removable from the shaft, but then again, it looked like that bearing assembly should remove easily too

 

i've contacted the company about parts distribution since they don't seem to sell factory direct. that bearing assembly looks like it is a one piece deal, the collar is part of the bearing - it appears to keep it appropriately positioned on the shaft, which in turn looks like it keeps the chipper wheel appropriately positioned on the shaft.

 

so i asked their engineering dept if that assembly is still available, and if not - if i could use a regular 1 3/16 bearing and shim it to get the same result. they were very prompt on their reply about the chute - which is no longer available, but the currently available one can be adapted easily. looks like it might be about 100 dollars, which isn't that bad, but, i'll probably try it out without first and see if i am OK with that operation. mainly i'd like to have a guide that i can start to feed a branch in on and have it stay in place - i can probably accomplish that a different way - but, can i do it for less than 100 dollars i guess is the question (i would think so?)

I'd say give it a shot the way it sets and see how you feel. 

Are you comfortable feeding it that way?

Do you find yourself always leaning or feeding towards one side?

Watch your habits that develop there. 

 

I've been around machinery all my life so I'm a little more comfortable than some folks being in close proximity to fast moving pieces. 

 

I find with my smaller chipper I'd rather not even have that chute/guide there. 

 

But again... 2 different people and 2 different machines. 

 

The larger more powerful one may scare the snot outta me so I want a guard....😀

I tell you what - the shredder attached to my 520 will pull a 1" branch through it without a hiccup, yank it right out of my hand. 

 

I was expecting it, so not a big deal, but it would be a little un-nerving if i had not been. 😄

Got the bearing race off.

Glad i did, too - all of the pins are missing from the hammer rods:

 

 

Dumb luck that nothing came loose when i tested it out.

 

 

Lots of crud behind the chipper wheel even after i blew it out.

Unfortunately the collar that holds the chipper wheel cracked when i dropped it:

 

 

Just add it to the list i guess. 😄

Hey can you get some nice square pics of the decals you have on that one?

 

Maybe @Stepney you and I can do the same so @Vinylguy Terry Could make up a kit. I'd like a new set. 

We'll be repainting ours later in the year.

I was missing a few pins also when I got mine. Come to the conclusion that the previous owner did not realize they are taper pins and put some in backwards so some came out. To error on the side of caution I drilled the holes out to the largest diameter for standard cotter pins.

this was uh.. poor planning in placement of my highly calibrated finger gauge when prying up on the chipper wheel. 

 

didn't feel too bad yesterday, but, it has made it's displeasure known this morning

well, got a hold of a mackissic parts dealer today and they confirmed that a) once those things are seized in place, they are a real challenge to remove b)the replacements are indeed sold as an entire unit (as is the other side) and they have all the parts i need still. I figure, this is the first time and hopefully the last time i'm in this equipment - so i'm going to replace both sides of the bearings, shims, rings, groove clips for the hammers and the knife and it's bolts. combine that cleaning up and sealing everything, i'm pretty confident that unless i abuse the snot out of it it'll be the last time i need to replace all of that.

Got mine all mounted up. The manual calls for the longest belt at 84". 

Mine is at LEAST 3 or 4 inches longer.

Interesting. I figured the 520 would be the longest. 

 

I lifted mine up with a floor jack probably 4 or 5 inches to get the belt on. I was worried it'd be too tight but the deflection seems ok. I can pinch the belt probably an inch or so

Nice idea. 

I hadn't thought to try that but I'm sure I'd be little to no closer. 

 

Even with the idler adjusted all the way down it measures about 87.5 inches around the OUTSIDE of the pulleys. 

I'll get belts to try from 86 to 89 if I can.

No, picked that up at the dealer years ago and turned it into a front hitch set up with a front electric winch years back.
