There are three belts there

MacKissic Number Belt # / Regular Belt Size

506-0003 / 4L-780

030-0073 / 4L-810

030-0126 / 4L-840

These are all 1/2 wide 5/16th deep.

 

The drawing shows a 3/8" rod threaded on both ends. The flat washers listed are 5/16 so must be USS and 3/8" nuts.

 

Does it give any indication which one of these belts would be used on my 1974 c160?

I figured on buying three or five belts and returning the ones I don't need anyway. Just curious.

Does this belt need to be cloth sided or regular Automotive rubber sided?

the way mine sits it has it's flat on an idler, so make sure the belt you use is OK with that. obviously, i don't have nearly enough hours on my chipper to tell you if the corded rubber backed belt i am using will hold up

must be - it was the only 84" belt that the hardware store had

the package describes it as a "general utility belt" for what it is worth.

General hardware store belts are FHP - fractional horse power like 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2

Any belt running on a flat idler needs to be designed for that reverse bend.

I know the Napa green belts are made by Gates and made for the job. TSC don't know.

Add a W to the end of the 4L belts   Ex 4L840W

Can you post a diagram of what it is you're looking for?

 

You may find it's an optional part you're not accustomed to using.

 

You may find that they are available online or from somebody like A To Z or a connection of his.

 

If I have one here I could take measurements and you could have one made up or make it yourself.

i'm sure i could use it without, but dimensions would be great so i could put something together.

 

believe it or not, they STILL MAKE the 12P (but on it's own cart, not to mount to tractors) so i'm guessing that they are out there.

I'll take a look and see if I have that.

 

It is kind of handy to have a funnel-like chute to direct/squeeze the branches when you're feeding them in but that piece can also get in the way very easily.

 

I'll double check later today and if I have it, get you some measurements.

you know, the one in nice condition doesn't have the chipper for branches like the rough one does - but - looking at the schematic closer - i think i could pull the branch chipper "side" off and attach it to the one in better shape?

 

i was thinking about what it would take to get the rough one cleaned up and painted, but that would reduce it to just a few pieces instead of the entire thing.  i'm already assuming i'm taking this thing apart anyhow to look at it and check the clearance of the knife, wear plate, etc.

 

i might've just discovered my weekend project

I prefer to use mine without the chipper hopper on it.

 

I am going to make a chute less than 2" long that has rounded edges at the inlet. Side branches on a limb tend to get caught on the square edges as they are going in.

I've got a smaller chipper like you push around the yard kind. I can certainly understand wanting to run that without the extra hindrance.

 

The miniature Branch guide sounds very interesting. 

Whenever you get around to doing that I'd love to see pictures.

i did find that the bearing inside part # 35 had this insert on the shaft, and it it wouldn't move. but i definitely did NOT drive a series of screw drivers and tiny cold chisels under the bearing housing to lift it up far enough to use a punch to drive the ball bearings out in order to get the whole thing loose enough that i could get a puller on that collar.

 

i did something smarter, i'm sure.

That thing would NOT move for nothing. It is free now.. although some bearings were hurt during the production. Parts list calls it  out as a 1 3/16 ball bearing so i should be able to get a replacement. And will give that collar snd the shaft a really good cleaning.

 

The collar is only supposed to be held on with a couple of set screws, so I'm not sure if i should use something like anti-sieze on it..
