Bob Nakon 55 #1 Posted August 13, 2020 Hi Guys, I just bought a C160, it's a 1976 and a nice runner. I noticed that it doesnt have to run very long for the hood to heat up so hot you can't touch it. When I open the hood there is nothing wrong, just see that big head compared to my C120. Anyone else experience this with the Kohler 16?
stevasaurus 23,305 #2 Posted August 13, 2020 I would just mention, since you just got it, make sure the fins on the engine are clean, the tins are all there and clean underneath them (mouse nests), and under the shroud and fly wheel are clean of debris also. 1
D_Mac 9,317 #3 Posted August 13, 2020 Yes I had a C-161. Same thing, the hood and the side of the grill would get really hot. Its just a bad design flaw. You look at most of these models you can see where the paint gets messed up along side of the grill and top of the hood. It is because the muffler sits so close. I think @c-series don made some heat shield for some of his to help correct that problem. Notice the first picture of mine you can see the paint discolored near the muffler. The original decal was also burned away, also the top of the hood around there became discolored. I was going to put a stack muffler on it to help with that problem but sold the tractor before I did it. 1
oldredrider 2,553 #4 Posted August 13, 2020 I disagree on the "design flaw". Have the same model and after 10 years, no sign of over heating. Hood still looks great. As stated above, check for good cooling air flow through the engine.

pacer 3,177 #6 Posted August 13, 2020 I have 2 of the WH D series and I learned long ago that if I get of the tractor to move a limb or whatever -- do not lean over and stick my hand out to steady...... yeooow! I also have 2 Massey Fergusons that have a full wrap around hood, now talk about getting hot

ebinmaine 72,993 #8 Posted August 13, 2020 @bcgold gets today's award for best representation of a meeses nest. My Cinnamon Horse is a 1974 C160 with a stack. I've never noticed that the hood is hot.
roadapples 6,983 #9 Posted August 14, 2020 I have 3 74 C160's with Nelson mufflers. You can lay your hand on the hood of any of them as long as they are running. Turn the key and all bets are off... 1
Bob Nakon 55 #10 Posted August 14, 2020 I'm feeling a little better after hearing that it is not unusual. The fins look nice and clean but i'll take the tin off as soon as I can. Thanks guys 1
rjg854 12,250 #11 Posted August 14, 2020 My 76 C160 gets hot also, and it's a freshly built engine, I know the tins and fins are clean, points set correctly, and the carb settings good. I wondered about that myself. Thanks for posting the topic, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one that thought about it.
JoeM 8,435 #12 Posted August 14, 2020 And don't count out not running them at higher RPM. Got to figure your cooling fan is the same size as a 12 or 14. More HP adds heat. Keep the revs up and move the air.
c-series don 10,146 #13 Posted August 14, 2020 (edited) After the paint on my newly restored C-121 blistered, I personally asked Cecil Pond about this and he said basically it was not the best design. Here’s the shield that I made for it. Edited August 14, 2020 by c-series don
