Key Switch connections

Hi All,

 

I am installing a new key switch and redoing some of the wiring that is there (PO redid wiring and removed most if not all the safety switches and they are nowhere to be found).  Both the old switch and the new one have 6 connections.  I can trace all the wiring and will rewire and put in new fuse holders.

 

However, on the old switch had the G connection was just tied back in to the B connection. 

• My questions is when installing the new switch; where should I connect the G connection to?

The  "G" will be for the ground. Connect this term to a ground.

 

Important to know if you have a battery ignition or a magneto ignition on the tractor. There will be an "I" terminal on the switch if it is designed for a battery ignition. The "+" side of the coil will go to this term. Power will be provided to the coil through this term when the switch is in the on position.

 

If you have a switch for a magneto ignition there will be an "M" terminal on the switch. The kill wire from the coil will go to this term. This term will be grounded out when the switch is in the off position.

The old switch is tough to read but I do see an M.  That connection went to the White wire under the tin and then connected to the regulator/rectifier.  The A connection is Purple going to the regulator/rectifier as well.  I need to remove the side tin to see what else it is connected to.  I know very little re: electrical on motors so any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Your 416-8 should have a magneto ignition unless some one changed it. If you follow the wire diagram that Gwest_ca & 953 nut posted for a magneto ignition tractor your new switch should work properly. If colors on the diagrams have different colors that you have then make sure that the wires are going to the proper places.

Thanks!  I have one last question.  The PO had a pigtail coming off the G connection back to B.  Can I run the G (ground) to the frame ground point of the Battery cable?  Or should I ground it separately to the frame?  Thanks again everyone!
