C-161 Heat Issue

Recommended Posts

D_Mac

I have a question about my newly acquired tractor. After mowing with it yesterday I noticed that the hood, air cleaner, grill got very hot. I can only assume it is from the exhaust that is positioned so close. Is this common with this style? I even noticed discoloration on the front grill from the heat over the years. Also wondering if that helped in the cracking of the air cleaner base plate. Anyone else have same issue? I know these are bad pictures. I just assumed it was just your regular paint fading but now I am sure its from the heat as it gets so hot. If you look you can see the areas. The muffler almost touches.

Yes they get hot . Might want to pull off the blower housing to make sure there are no nests or grass on the engine fins. Your cracked air cleaner is probably due to the fact that motor is mounted on a shaker plate

My C141 has the same problem! This muffler is larger in diameter than the one on my C160 which does not have this issue. I was told these mufflers came out as Wheel Horse was transitioning to the Black Hood series which I am guessing had a wider hood.

I think I have an older smaller Nelson that I can install on this machine. I am in the process of cleaning up and painting this tractor and I don't want to ruin the new paint.

my c 85 originally had that front engine muffler ,  its relatively easy to swap that out for the top /side muffler of later years . your engine screw in exhaust port is the same , you might pick up a used side muffler , and remount as to later engines. just my own experience , don,t want to scare anyone with a change , pete

I have that muffler on my C-105 Black Hood and yes - side and hood gets hot... Little more space in there on mine compared to yours, but it is still plenty toasty...

I have a full house. I just had to come in because its raining out. I either have to work in the driveway in the rain, or push the other 2 out in the rain while I work on one in the garage. I might have a visitor tomorrow. @Chris G said he would stop over and tell me how bad I been messing up the Lambert. I wish my parts would have come in today but it dosnt look like they are. I will listen to his advice. I am not sure if the engine I have is going to work, we will see. @SylvanLakeWH I DO HAVE A RED ONE NOW!!!

c-series don

The paint bubbled on my freshly restored C-121 the day before the big show one year. I showed this to the man himself, Cecil Pond and he said “ Well that’s a poor design now isn’t it!” I believe that they all did it (78-79’s)except for the C-81 which came factory with a smaller muffler.

I made a heat shield for my C-121, but have not done so for any of my other C-series. I’ll take pictures tomorrow.
