Introducing “Rebel” the 953

Get well soon Richie!  I have a couple I could take measurements from for the holes.  If it will fit, I think I’ll make that change!

Can this fan gear steering setup from a GT-14 replace a Ross steering gear on a 953 as a bolt in swap?  Is it any stronger?

Wouldn't be worth the effort. Rebuilding the Ross unit isn't a bad job.       @Lane Ranger documented the process well for us.

Uncle Jim mentioned his October plow day.   Along with Rylee chompin’ at the bit to get her Suburban running, my need to swap a Duramax engine and other various projects, I need to get this 953 ready to run a plow all day!

Sounds like you have some free time for a few more projects yet.:ychain::D

So I got the hole drilled and tapped, the block is cleaned up, now time to clean up the head!  You can tell by the head gasket marks that remain after some initial flat plate wet sanding... Yep, it’s warped!

Another good thread that I missed somehow!!

I see you have an LP head, nice!

I would rebuild the ross box if I were you, they are a good box and I think yours may be the 3 turn, which is good!

thanks Randy!  Can you explain the LP head?  I used to have an S10 Blazer mud truck with an LP 366 tall deck BBC.

Some early K241's had a head that come from kohler generators that run on LP so that had a smaller combustion chamber for more compression.

The later ones has a dished out portion that goes out over the piston. The newer head will flow better, but compression is king in stock pulling. Pullers are paying over a hundred bucks for those to use in stock pullers.

That head on a K301  really wakes them up. I used to run one on one of my pullers and a later head milled .050 on the other. The LP head has more compression and you can even tell by the sound.

Here is a link to another site with good info on the heads. Sorry its a cub site.  http://cubfaq.com/lphead.html

Ok. I usually don't get that much attention about the GT 14 but ....inquiring minds want to know...so happy to comply....

I'm sure you will appreciate this "true rebel" down here in Georgia!

The guys on this forum warned me...

I now have the GT 14 and 2 - C120's....addiction has struck!

Good luck with rebel.

Rebel came out of summer’s nap last night.  With the upcoming plow day, I have my work cut out for me!

Yesterday I grabbed belts, engine oil, 80/90, and various fuel system needs, along with new pins for the hydraulic cylinder.  Today, I ordered an assortment of fasteners from www.TheBoltDepot.com including new “shear pins” for Frank’s rear hubs, 9/16-20x4” bolts for Rebel’s inside wheel weights and some other goodies too.  I’m on a breakfast date with my cute niece having “toppings and toast” before any work or tractor rides though!

Rebel’s got no axle seals and didn’t have an input pulley either.  I grabbed the pulley off of the 1054 roller for the time being so I can say I put the belt on.  I need to put a brake rod together and assemble the brakes so I can connect the clutch spring and see if it’ll move after a top off of fresh gear lube!

This trans had just been gone through before I picked it up... it’s still dry inside.  Plenty of anti-seize on the axles helped slide the hubs right off though!

More lead than I can carry in one trip across the shop should help weigh Rylee down in the furrow!  Sorry @Coulter Caleb @Shynon @prondzy, I think this might work better than oatmeal and bricks!

I’ll bolt two pieces on to the sides of the grill, then place a few blocks in the tool box too.

No idea.  Come to find out, just the right side was missing.  Honest mistake?  Who knows.  The parts store has 4 11050’s waiting for me 2.5 miles away!
