diesel cowboy 263 #27 Posted April 12, 2020 Going by what I can see of the frame, plus the rear end fenders and hitch I think it started life as a Speedex. With that bevel gear going into the differential housing maybe a M or D series which would put it mid 50s or earlier, but they never had a transmission setup like that as far as I know
WHNJ701 4,165 #28 Posted April 12, 2020 agree with diesel cowboy, looks like a lot of speedex parts
D_Mac 9,302 #29 Posted April 12, 2020 Well I am back from picking it up. I am afraid it looks better in pictures then in person. It is for certain a little of this and a little of that. I am in way over my head with this. The gentleman I picked it up from couldnt be any nicer of a guy. He purchased the house in January and this and a few other things were left in a shed. More of a carport then shed. he asked if I wanted some of the other things left in there so we walked back and I picked out the homemade dump trailer and a set of AG tires and rims with chains on them. I would have took more but that filled my truck up. I left behind a plow frame and blade that I didnt know if it went with the tractor and a tow behind lawn roller. He said I could always go back for them if I want. After we got it all loaded into my truck I went to pay him. Before I left my house he said 20 for the tractor and didnt say a price on the rest. Well he refused to take any money for any of it. The guy couldnt have been any nicer. Well I got it all home and when unloading the tractor it kind of got a way from me a bit and the front fell off the ramps. Did not to any damage to the tractor but I cant say the same for my right forearm. Its got a pretty good bump on it now. Just a bump and bruise Nothing broke I am sure. The tractor is a hodge podge of stuff. All I know for certain is it is a 8hp briggs engine. has the updraft carb on it. Pulled the cord has compression by the pull cord works about 50% of the time. I gave up on it for today as my arm was bothering me and I was getting tired. Still dont have all my strength back yet. Anyways Here are a couple of picks. Who do I see about paying for membership ? 1 1

D_Mac 9,302 #31 Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Says I only used about 50% of my attachment quota but wont let me load anymore pics. Hmmm there it goes < shrug > Looks pretty safe huh ? How can you possibly get hurt riding this? Better get a tetanus shot. Could the hood be off a Gibson? It does say something under the gas tank. You can read... LAWN then the tank blocks the rest but an R at the end. Lawn Tractor maybe I dont know. Edited April 12, 2020 by D_Mac 3 1 1
squonk 43,862 #32 Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Park it across the street in that tow-a-way zone and see if anybody actually tows it! Edited April 12, 2020 by squonk
D_Mac 9,302 #33 Posted April 12, 2020 LOL would you be the one towing it away?
squonk 43,862 #34 Posted April 12, 2020 I'd be sitting in a lawn chair having a cold drink watching the fun. Have that trailer hooked to it with giant rabbit sitting in it.They will be scratching their heads.

CCW 1,379 #36 Posted April 12, 2020 For the price you can tear it apart, play, learn and then throw away. Never have to worry about putting it back together. Did this with and old Sunfish sailboat. At the end of its life I cut it up to see the inside and thru it into the dumpster.
Stepney 2,354 #37 Posted April 12, 2020 Yeh, better photos really make that look like a Speedex rear end.. And a Kaiser T96 transmission?? OK then. Interesting line up of parts to be sure.. 1
D_Mac 9,302 #38 Posted April 12, 2020 Wish I knew what the hood was off of. Would that be a 3 speed transmission? Are the gears supposed to be all exposed? Pretty sure there is some water in there.
SylvanLakeWH 28,474 #39 Posted April 12, 2020 Very cool! Worth it just for the trailer!!! Become a supporter and post all the pics you want. Top of the main page...

Pretty sure there is some water in there. With the new pictures I'm pretty sure the hood came off a Bonanza lawn tractor and the frame and rear is almost definitely Speedex. Can't help on the trans as I've never dealt with any of those other than the T-92. If it was mine I'd get the thing running and enjoy using it, it looks cool and unique
oliver2-44 10,738 #42 Posted April 13, 2020 (edited) I agree T96 Jeep, Studebaker transmission and a Speedex rear end. Get it running and use it as a show cruiser at Tractor shows. You would get lots of looks. Might need to rig a guard or too for those exposed gears. Edited April 13, 2020 by oliver2-44 1

D_Mac 9,302 #44 Posted April 13, 2020 (edited) Im going to do my best at getting it running. Getting it driving is a whole different story. The hand lever on the left hand side appears to do nothing. The foot rest on the left side seems to operate the tension wheel on the right side to engage the home made belt drive system. The foot rest on the right side is stationary. I do not see any kind of braking other then to release tension on the belt. Looks like its going to need some fabricating and reengineering. I dont have the tools or knowledge to do either. I will get it running and see what happens. The dump cart is homemade. The axle is from the front end of something. The bed I believe is a wheelbarrow. The rest fabricated. The tires and rims look pretty good. Not sure if they fit. Tires that are on the tractor dont fit right. Only 3 lugs. Tires are snow tires from a car so maybe I will see if the other rims and tires with chains fit better. I believe the steering and hood are mashed together. I think the original steering column for that hood came through the hole on top. I believe there may have been some type of gauge in the dash that was removed to pass this column through. Also where it says " Lighter " on dash is a button. Not sure if that is a kill switch. @diesel cowboy might be right about it being a Bonanza hood. I liked them up. looks close but I havent seen any photos of any that look exactly like this one with the round vents on the side. The grill looks like one though. Mickwhitt 5,132 #48 Posted April 13, 2020 Its without doubt a big project. But it's more than do able with all the help you will get on this site. I didn't think I'd be capable of getting Fred running again but with the advice and knowledge here I managed it and he's a great little tractor. Just take your time, take lots of photos so it goes back together right and store parts safely for when they are needed for the rebuild. If you get stuck what's the worst that can happen? It has all the makings of a nice project to keep you busy. Mick
SylvanLakeWH 28,474 #49 Posted April 13, 2020 Just curious - any guess as to what the chain is for on the inside rim of the right rear tire? (Post 31 - 2nd picture)
953 nut 60,145 #50 Posted April 13, 2020 (edited) The chain going art way around the sprocket is there to rotate something I guess, what is going on there?
