Charger 10/12 resto

Thought I would start a new thread because originally I was going to do a patina build but as I got into these two chargers there was a lot of welding repair needed to get it done. So I decided to strip the paint off of everything and start from the beginning. So here I go! By next step will be to get into the transmission and fix the parking brake part inside.

I also just got done putting together this 12 horse that I went through to put on this charger 10.

The paint job on this one I'm planning on using my HVLP paint gun. I'm going to buy some international Harvester red from tractor supply and put Hardner in the paint to make it more durable. After then I will spray a clear lacquer and buff it out.

By the way I'm also noticing On this charger 10 that I was under the impression that back in 1969 they were using a stick welder on these tractors. I just found evidence of a wire welder being used. And the guy that probably welded this one was a little new and that I was under the impression that back in 1969 they were using a stick welder on these tractors. I just found evidence of a wire welder being used. And the guy that probably welded this one was a little new!

Tractor looks good! Did you have that one bored or was that the 14 HP?

The 14 is going on IRV . The 12 is going 

on the charger 10. And yes the 14 will be bored 10 over

You might consider using the Rustoleum paint available from Tractor Supply over there store brand.  The store brand seems to fade in a short time.

I bet it’s gonna look awesome when you’re done!  If you don’t do the parking brake fix on this thread, make sure to tag me in the transmission section when you start another!  I have a couple that might need that attention soon.

Kevin that 1970 Charger that I'm working on has all the linkages and everything but they are frozen in place with corrosion. I'll try to remember to share some pictures and information on my thread as well.

I’m fixin’ to be looking at the innards of the parking brake.  The pawls on mine are healthily sheared off.

Yeah I should be able to help you out with that.

 

If I get this thing up and running and the transmission works okay I still have to split it and put new axles and hubs in.

Can that parking brake pawl be repaired 

or get one somewhere ? Ive heard this is 

a common thing?

Not sure if a new replacement is available, but it's a common thing because people like to disengage the hydro with the tractor still moving, which shears the pawl off. Exactly the same thing as throwing your car into park with it still moving.

Easily repaired. Have had many done at a local machine shop. $15-$20.

the tool crib , your work / shop area says it all for me , that alone puts you in a totally different  work/ repair state . having the space and set up lets you do a very thorough job , i wish i had the yard space to have such a set up , pete

Thanks Pete this is my retirement in four years. It's taken me nearly 20 years to put it together and with a little careful planning it's not too bad. It's nearly 800 ft.

it's in my basement so it's climate controlled and lots of storage for tractor parts.

If you have the bail style (#31)

If you have a welder just build it back up and file grind back to shape i have done a few and I not good at welding....

 

There is another style, finger with teeth that is not as easy for and amateur welder to fix.
