Well here is some progress.  I dug some of the major components out of the rack!  The transmission was in one of the 2’ deep totes.  I forgot how heavy it was!

@wallfish I’m pretty sure you were a pioneer of the doodle bug style Horses.  Do you have any archived pictures of your steering setups for offset steering shafts?  I thought I took better pictures at the show, I guess not.  Seems the fan gear on this one was on the “firewall” but I don’t recall the rest of it.

I realize my explanation is a bit backwards from the DB setup.  The inside pulley is the driven one.  When the clutch locks up, the outside pulley begins to drive the transaxle forward.  I’m sure either way would work, if I can fit it into the build!

These are 27x10’s.  Dare I say they are too big?  I think I’ll find a set of 8” wide tires around here and go from there.  No matter how I make it longer, one thing’s for sure.  It needs to be longer!

 

The hydro trans is bolted up for the time being.

Actually a set of meats that big with some tread on them would look killer tucked up under the bed and would take up some length on the visual side of it, meaning you wouldn’t have as much frame showing down the side under the bed. Keep it going Kev........

I can probably find some but it was offset with a couple of sprockets and a chain.

Just a quick thought for something more "heavy duty" is to use a couple of universal joints in the shaft and maybe in the steering wheel shaft too. A Ross type of steering mechanism would be easy to offset and give reliability.

Or, if your ambitious enough, a plan I have for a build is use two frames welded side by side, cut one side off of two front axles after the axle pin and use coil over shocks from a frame to the front axles for front suspension. Now the frame will be wide enough to easily offset the steering with different length tie rods

  John, do you think that a wider front axle would help with the steering problem a longer frame would create?

Those old Sundstrands were beastly hydros.  We beat on dad’s for over 25 years and couldn’t kill it of course it had proper fluid and filter changes but I’m a believer.  Dad said that they used the same hydro unit in various self propelled 1960’s farm equipment that was much larger than a  with good success.  He’d be on a service call for a machine and see while wrenching on it that it had the same hydro as his garden tractor!  The three most damaging things to a hydro are air, water, and dirt.  If you can keep them clean and fresh fluid—those old heavy beasts are tough as nails...

I’m quite tempted to do a refresh and thorough cleaning inside this one, just to be sure it’s in tip top shape!  If anything, stick a belt on it and run it off a pto for a while and see how it does before making that decision.
