I'm still watching you boys but I haven't got a clue what that thing is. I showed it to Trina and her mom and all of us have no notion.

I agree. Unfortunately for them they don't have Grandma's cup to make them feel better.

Does it clamp onto something else?

Is it a guide for another tool?

Or is it used independently?

What is the wheel made of? Or more to the point does it Mark something?

I had to give myself a break,  I run on Windows 95.

I don’t have the slightest idea as to what that could be

It is not clamped onto anything

it is used independently except for with piece being worked.

Wheel is hardened steel.

It does not mark anything.

It is not a "guide" but it is self guiding.

No but for extremely hard and difficult grain woods I use it very often.

No.                                                             Now I am confused,  in this pic the wheel looks round and smooth.

But on this one it looks sharp like it could be a scraper.

I didn't really jump.

What I keep going back to is rubbing the edge of a board across that smooth wheel  Must condition it for the next step.

  Staining?

A few more hints;

Its made in Germany. Those people are clever. I don't know of another like it or similar made anywhere else by anybody.

It does rub against "something"

It is still available today.

Majority of woodworkers "today"never seen one.

Majority of woodworkers "today" never think they have a need for one.

I bet your father in law would know what it is.
